The morning sun broke over the cliffs of Beacon Academy, casting a harsh, revealing light on the true state of the grounds. The grand cobblestone plaza was no longer a war zone, but it bore the jagged scars of the previous day's violence. Scorched earth from White Fang thermite grenades sat alongside massive cracks in the masonry where Atlesian droids had crashed. At the center of the courtyard, hundreds of students stood in silent, orderly ranks.
The international banners of the Vytal Festival, the crests of Atlas, Mistral, and Vacuo, shivered in the cool morning breeze, but the festive energy was entirely gone. In the front row, Team RWBY stood close together. Yang's right arm was bound tightly to her chest in a medical sling, her violet eyes fixed forward with a grim, uncharacteristic stillness.
Beside her, Weiss Schnee held her chin high, her fingers twitching against her skirt as she fought the urge to look back at the Atlas airships docked on the cliffs. Next to them stood Team JNPR. Pyrrha Nikos was present, though she leaned heavily against Jaune Arc's shoulder for support. Her skin was terribly pale, and her left arm was wrapped in heavy bandages where Cinder's arrow had grazed her skin before the intervention, but her green eyes were wide, clear, and intensely focused.
Jaune kept his arm subtly anchored around her waist, his body language tense, acting as a human crutch to keep her standing. Glynda Goodwitch stood atop a raised stone platform that had survived the destruction of the central fountain. She did not wear her usual stern, academic expression. Her face was an unreadable mask of solemn gravity. She adjusted her glasses, her green eyes sweeping over the sea of young faces, children who had entered the weekend as tournament competitors and woken up as survivors of a war.
"Yesterday," Glynda's voice rang out, amplified by the remaining intact audio conduits of the plaza, "this academy faced an assault designed not merely to destroy our walls, but to shatter the very foundation of global peace. The network that connects our kingdoms has been compromised. The security we took for granted has been exposed as fragile." A heavy murmur rippled through the ranks of Team FNKI and Team NDGO. Neon Katt's usual bright, bouncy demeanor was entirely absent.
She stood with her roller skates slung over her shoulder, her eyes fixed on the pavement.
"Many of you are far from home," Glynda continued, her gaze lingering on the foreign teams.
"In the coming days, your respective kingdoms will initiate recall protocols. The Vytal Festival is officially concluded. You will return to Atlas, to Mistral, and to Vacuo, not as defeated students, but as the front line of defense for a world that is rapidly changing. The threats we faced here are not unique to Vale. The darkness that crawled from the forests of Forever Fall sleeps outside every border." Ruby Rose tightened her grip on her cloak, her silver eyes shimmering with a mixture of grief and resolve.
"But look around you," Glynda said, her voice rising with a sharp, resonant authority that made every student straighten their posture.
"Beacon Academy has not fallen. The Grimm were purged. The invaders were routed. We will rebuild these halls, conduit by conduit, stone by stone. And while the headmaster is currently absent, I assure you that the purpose of this institution remains absolute: we train guardians. And we will not yield." If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it. A collective breath seemed to escape the crowd, a sudden, palpable return of hope.
"However," Glynda said, her tone shifting into a slightly strained, formal register that caught Ruby's attention.
"The nature of our defensive perimeter must adapt. To ensure the safety of the campus during the reconstruction phase, the administration has established a new auxiliary department. Effective immediately, the academy has retained the services of a Special Campus Security Consultant." Glynda stepped to the side and gestured toward the rear of the platform. Saitama walked out from behind a stack of covered building materials.
He was wearing his bright yellow jumpsuit, but he had a white plastic convenience store bag dangling from his left wrist. He was casually picking at a small piece of dried fruit from a trail mix packet, his standard, dot-eyed face completely blank as he stopped next to Glynda.
"Uh... Hey," Saitama said, giving a small, lazy wave with his red-gloved hand.
"I'm Saitama. Just... let me know if any more of those giant bird things try to nest on the roof. Otherwise, don't mind me. I'll just be walking around." The reaction from the student body was instantaneous, divided into a sharp contrast of emotions. Ruby's face erupted into a brilliant, wide-eyed grin. He's staying! She thought. Her inner weapon-geek and hero-fanatic screaming in unison. An actual extra-dimensional superhero is our security guard! This is the coolest thing that has ever happened to Beacon!
Beside her, Jaune Arc felt a sudden, profound spark of determination ignite in his chest. He looked at Saitama's completely unathletic, ordinary posture. One hundred push-ups, sit-ups, squats... Jaune reminded himself, his jaw clenching with a quiet, fierce resolve. No shortcuts. He did it. I can do it too. Pyrrha Nikos, however, simply stared at the bald man with a deep, reverent awe. Her breath hitched slightly. She remembered the heat of the tower roof.
She remembered the absolute certainty of her own death, the terrifying weight of Cinder Fall's burning arrow aimed directly at her chest. And then, she remembered the sudden, impossible rush of wind, the man who had casually deflected an apex predator with a single backhand. He doesn't have an Aura. Pyrrha thought, her brilliant tactical mind completely failing to find a logical explanation for his existence. He doesn't use Dust. He is entirely... ordinary. Yet he broke the sky.
Further back in the crowd, Sun Wukong let out a low whistle, a grin spreading across his face.
"Man, Beacon's nights are about to get real quiet if that guy is walking the beat." On the high balcony of the administrative building, overlooking the courtyard, three figures watched the assembly from the shadows. General James Ironwood stood with his hands clasped firmly behind his back, his cybernetic eye whirring softly as it tracked the students' reactions.
"Look at them," Ironwood muttered, his voice low and calculating.
"They don't know whether to treat him like a savior or a clown. But the native teams... they're already looking to him for inspiration."
"That's because kids know a real monster when they see one, Jimmy," Qrow Branwen said, leaning heavily against the balcony railing. He had a small wooden toothpick between his teeth, his red eyes narrowed as he watched Saitama scratch his bald head on the platform.
"They saw him erase a Wyvern like it was a smudge on a chalkboard. You can't put that kind of power into a textbook."
"It remains a highly volatile compromise," Winter Schnee said, stepping up beside the general, her hand resting on her saber hilt. Her eyes were fixed on her sister, Weiss, who was currently watching Saitama with a mix of extreme skepticism and grudging respect.
"We have given an unquantifiable, unregistered entity free rein over a primary training institution. If his presence draws the attention of the enemy before our defenses are repaired--""Then he'll punch them too," Qrow interrupted flatly, turning away from the railing and pulling his collar up against the wind.
"Relax, Schnee. For the first time in twenty years, the bad guys are the ones who have to worry about a surprise variable. Let the bald guy have his rice. We've got a lot of stone to move."
