The air inside Amity Colosseum was thick with an electric, almost suffocating tension. The Vytal Festival Tournament had reached its apex, but for Pyrrha Nikos, the roar of the crowd sounded like rushing water, distant and distorted. Her heart hammered against her ribs. Across the arena, Penny Polendina danced through the air, her emerald blades weaving a deadly, shimmering web. Pyrrha was exhausted. Her aura was fraying. And then, the hallucination struck.
Where there were only a dozen blades, Pyrrha suddenly saw thousands. A tidal wave of gleaming steel reared up, threatening to crush her into the arena floor. Panic, raw and unbridled, seized the Invincible Girl. Operating purely on instinct and a desperate need to survive, she thrust her hands forward, channeling every ounce of her Polarity Semblance. Snap. The sound was shockingly loud, cutting through the cheers of the stadium. Pyrrha blinked, the illusion shattering. But the nightmare had just begun.
Penny hung suspended in the air, her own wires pulled violently taut by Pyrrha's magnetic force. The robotic girl's eyes widened in a fleeting moment of confusion before the wires sliced inward. Metal shrieked. Circuits burst. Penny was torn apart in mid-air, her mechanical limbs raining down onto the scorched synthetic grass.
"No..." Pyrrha whispered, dropping to her knees, her weapon clattering beside her.
"No, no, no..." In the stands, Ruby Rose burst through the spectator gates, her silver eyes wide with absolute horror. She was too late. The secret was out. The crowd stared at the sparking, robotic remains of the Atlas champion. Silence fell over the colosseum, heavy and suffocating. Then, the screens flickered. The Vytal Tournament logo dissolved into a stark, jagged black queen chess piece. A woman's voice, smooth as silk and cold as ice, echoed through the stadium speakers.
"This is not a tragedy." Cinder Fall's voice purred into the minds of millions across Remnant.
"This was not an accident. This is what happens when you trust your safety to men who would replace your children with machines." As Cinder's manifesto of fear and doubt broadcasted to every screen, every scroll, and every radio, the negativity swelled. It was a massive, pulsing beacon of terror, anger, and betrayal. And the creatures of Grimm answered. Warning sirens wailed across the city of Vale.
The sky, previously a clear twilight, was suddenly choked by storm clouds and the massive, leathery wings of Nevermores. CRASH! The energy shield surrounding Amity Colosseum shattered like fragile glass. A colossal Nevermore breached the arena, its terrifying screech vibrating in the teeth of every student present. Panic erupted. Civilians trampled one another, rushing for the exit shuttles. Down in the arena, Sun Wukong extended his staff, deflecting a massive falling chunk of debris away from a screaming family.
"Everyone, get to the transports!" he roared over the din. Beside him, Lie Ren drew his StormFlower pistols, his face a mask of calm focus.
"We need to clear a path. Nora!"
"On it!" Nora Valkyrie screamed, hefting Magnhild. With a blast of pink explosive dust, she launched herself into the air, bringing her hammer down onto the skull of a leaping Griffon that had just breached the stands. High above, General James Ironwood drew his revolver, his cybernetic jaw clenched tight.
"All Atlesian personnel, initiate defensive protocols! Protect the civilians! Hold the line!" For a moment, the Huntsmen and the Atlas military stood united, a bulwark against the encroaching tide of black bone and red eyes. But the enemy had planned for this. A sharp, high-pitched electronic whine pierced the battlefield. Across the stadium and the academy grounds below, the Atlesian Knights, the android soldiers meant to protect them, suddenly halted.
The soft blue glow of their visors flickered, then snapped to a violent, aggressive crimson.
"Sir!" an Atlas specialist yelled, staring at his scroll.
"The network, we're locked out! The Knights are--" He didn't finish his sentence. A Knight raised its rifle and fired, the dust round catching the specialist in the shoulder.
"They're shooting at us!" Weiss Schnee yelled, deflecting a volley of gunfire with a glyph as she ran alongside Blake Belladonna. Blake deflected a bullet with Gambol Shroud, her amber eyes scanning the horizon. Bullheads, stolen Atlas transports, were descending upon Beacon Academy. The doors slid open, revealing dozens of White Fang members wielding blades and rifles, howling for human blood.
"It's an invasion," Blake whispered, the weight of her past crashing down on her.
Deep beneath Beacon Academy, entirely divorced from the chaotic war above, the air in the Vault was frigid. Professor Ozpin leaned heavily on his cane, watching as Pyrrha stepped into the Aura transfer pod. Opposite her lay Amber, the comatose Fall Maiden. Jaune Arc stood by the entrance, his shield raised, his breathing erratic.
"Are you ready, Miss Nikos?" Ozpin asked, his voice betraying a deep, sorrowful fatigue. If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
"I am," Pyrrha said softly, though her hands trembled. The machine whirred to life. Amber energy flowed between the two pods, and Pyrrha screamed in agony as two souls attempted to occupy a single body. Suddenly, an arrow of solid, superheated glass shattered the reinforced door, piercing straight through the control console. The transfer violently short-circuited. Cinder Fall stepped into the vault, her eyes glowing with stolen power, flanked by Emerald and Mercury.
Without a word, she raised her bow, manifesting another arrow, and fired it directly into Amber's chest. The young woman gasped her last breath, and the remaining Fall Maiden power flowed out of her, rushing into Cinder. Cinder levitated off the ground, a crown of fire weaving itself into her hair. The power was intoxicating. She was a god. Ozpin gripped his cane, his aura flaring in a blinding white light. He looked back at Pyrrha, who had fallen from the pod, and Jaune, who was rushing to help her.
"Take Mr. Arc and run," Ozpin commanded, his voice echoing with ancient authority.
"Get to the surface. Find Glynda. Find Ironwood."
"But Professor--" Pyrrha started.
"Go!" As Jaune dragged Pyrrha into the elevator, the doors closed on the sight of Ozpin charging Cinder, a blur of white light colliding with a tempest of raging fire.
Beacon Academy was falling. The massive CCT tower burned, its lower levels collapsing under the weight of Grimm and White Fang explosives. Above it all, a shadow blotted out the moon. The Wyvern. An ancient Grimm of unfathomable size, the beast circled the tower, dripping a viscous, black substance that hit the ground and birthed entirely new creatures of Grimm. It roared, shaking the very foundations of the school. At the base of the tower, Pyrrha shoved Jaune into a rocket locker.
"Pyrrha, what are you doing?!" Jaune screamed, pounding his fists against the reinforced glass.
"We have to leave!"
"I'm sorry," Pyrrha whispered, tears streaking her soot-stained cheeks. She leaned in, pressing her lips to his in a desperate, final kiss. She pulled away, hit the launch button, and watched as the locker blasted into the sky, carrying the boy she loved to safety. She turned back to the burning tower. Her destiny awaited. Minutes later, Pyrrha stood on the shattered roof of the CCT tower, her shield battered, her breathing ragged. Her aura flickered and died, leaving her completely vulnerable.
Cinder Fall stood over her, breathing heavily but completely victorious. She held a bow of black glass, drawing back the string. A deadly arrow materialized, pointed directly at Pyrrha's heart.
"Do you believe in destiny?" Pyrrha asked, her voice defiant despite the blood pooling in her mouth. Cinder's eyes narrowed, cold and merciless.
"Yes." Ruby Rose was sprinting up the side of the tower, her Semblance pushing her beyond her limits. She could see them through the crumbling architecture. She saw the bow. She saw the arrow.
"PYRRHA!" Ruby screamed, extending her hand as if she could cross the distance by sheer will. Hope was entirely spent. Remnant was about to lose its brightest star. Then, a sudden, deafening sonic boom split the sky. The heavens themselves seemed to tear open. A streak of yellow and red cut through the dark, swirling storm clouds above Vale, crashing onto the ruined stone platform of the tower with the catastrophic force of a meteor.
The impact sent a massive shockwave across the peak of the tower, blasting Cinder off her feet and throwing her against the grinding gears of the shattered clock face. The glass arrow shattered into harmless dust. Ruby, just cresting the stairs, was thrown backward by the sheer wind pressure, covering her eyes against the blinding debris. Thick, grey smoke and powdered stone billowed from a massive new crater in the center of the rooftop. Cinder groaned, pushing herself up from the rubble.
Her eyes burned with Maiden fire as she glared into the dust, expecting to see Ozpin returned, or Qrow Branwen, or perhaps Ironwood in a heavy mech. As the smoke cleared, the figure was revealed. He wore no armor. He possessed no transforming weapon, no Dust pouches, no tactical gear. He was a bald man in a slightly baggy, bright yellow jumpsuit. A plain white cape fluttered lazily in the ash-laden wind, accompanied by bright red rubber boots and matching gloves.
His face was drawn with simple, dot-like eyes and a completely flat, vacant expression. The bald man blinked, looking around at the burning city, the flying black monsters, and the terrified students. He lifted a red-gloved hand and scratched the side of his bald head.
"Ah... I am definitely going to miss that sale," he muttered to himself, his voice entirely devoid of dramatic weight. The Wyvern above, sensing this sudden, bizarre intrusion on its territory, let out an earth-shattering roar. It swooped down toward the tower, its massive jaws unhinging, ready to swallow the yellow-clad man whole.
"Look out!" Pyrrha screamed, her voice raspy and weak. The man in yellow suit didn't even look up. As the Wyvern's jaws clamped down, he casually raised his left arm, swatting at the beast as if it were an oversized mosquito. BOOM. The impact was so loud it drowned out the war below. The sheer air pressure from his casual backhand didn't just repel the beast.
It blew a hole straight through the Wyvern's lower jaw, snapping its neck and sending the colossal creature careening sideways into the side of a distant mountain, where it lay completely motionless. Silence descended upon the CCT tower. The grinding gears seemed to stop. The wind died down. Down in the courtyard, students and Atlas soldiers alike stopped fighting, staring up at the sky where the massive Grimm had just been swatted away like a fly.
"What... what kind of Semblance is that?!" Weiss gasped from the quad, staring upward in absolute disbelief. Back on the tower, the man looked at his red glove, then up at the sky where the beast had been. He sighed, his flat expression shifting into a slight frown.
"Man, these monster designs are getting weirder. Is this a Monster Association raid? I don't even know what city this is." Cinder Fall felt a foreign emotion claw its way up her throat: absolute, paralyzing terror. She abandoned all finesse. Tapping into the deepest well of the Fall Maiden's magic, she screamed in fury, launching a colossal torrent of superheated fire across the rooftop, aiming to incinerate the bald intruder in a miniature sun.
The column of flame engulfed the bald man entirely, melting the stone beneath his boots into bubbling slag. Ruby screamed in horror, covering her face from the blistering heat. But as the fire dissipated, the man was standing there entirely unharmed. Not a single blister. Not a drop of sweat. His cape was slightly smudged with soot. He patted his shoulder, a hint of genuine annoyance finally creeping into his voice.
"Hey, watch the clothes, lady. Laundromats aren't cheap." With a slight bend of his knees, the man in yellow suit turned his attention to the sky, where a massive flock of Nevermores were circling, drawn by the panic. He leapt. The stone platform shattered into a secondary crater as he launched upward like a rocket, breaking the sound barrier instantly. He blew right past Cinder, who could not even track his movement with her Maiden-enhanced eyes. He appeared directly in the center of the flock of Nevermores.
He drew back his right fist.
"Normal Punch." The strike connected with thin air, but the concussive force was apocalyptic. A shockwave rippled through the upper atmosphere, violently parting the storm clouds above Vale in a massive, perfect ring, letting the afternoon sun break through for the first time in hours. The air pressure vaporized the entire flock of Grimm instantly, turning them into a massive cloud of black dust that rained harmlessly over the academy.
The man dropped lightly back onto the ruined stone platform, his red boots clicking softly against the stone. He landed right between a stunned, trembling Cinder and a bleeding, wide-eyed Pyrrha. He looked at Cinder, analyzing her glowing eyes, the floating fire, and her trembling hands.
"Are you the boss here?" The man asked, his posture slouching slightly in disappointment.
"Man, you guys are making way too much noise."
