Well, fuck you, too. I didn't want their business anyway. Walking out of the smithy, I give the blacksmith a friendly smile that is definitely real. Doesn't serve my kind? Yeah, right. The asshole just doesn't want to admit that he can't fix Stabby. Prideful is what he is.
"Don't worry, bud. I'll get you fixed up eventually," I say as I open the box to the Uneven Blade or at least the broken remnants of it. Ever since he broke, I've been going to every smithy that I could find, but every single one of these assholes tells me the same thing.
'We can't fix it. Just buy a new one.' Buy a new one? Would you buy a new brother? No, well, at least I wouldn't. I tried taking it back to where Penelope bought it for me, but they said that it's irreparable.
"Stabby, what should I do? Everyone keeps saying that it's impossible to fix you. That I should just throw you away and get a new you, but I can't do that. You've saved my life so many times," I say as I sit down on a bench and look towards the sky. I've always had a hard time letting things go. It might be because of what my mother used to say about everything having a Spirit, or it might just be me living on the streets with basically nothing to call my own.
Whatever the reason, I know that I'm not the type to just wallow in self-pity. If these assholes won't do it, then I'll just have to do it myself. To do that, I must learn the ways of the smithy, and I know just the person to ask. William shakes his head.
"What do you mean you don't know how to forge?" I ask in astonishment. He shrugs.
"Ah, I see. So, I'm the asshole here for assuming that all Dwarves know how to forge. Damn, sorry about that. Any chance you know somebody who could fix up my sword?" I ask as I scratch my horn. William strokes his blond beard, and then his eyes go wide.
"You do! That's great! Who is it?" He gives me a grimace before waving me off.
"What do you mean it would be better if I didn't meet them? Can they or can't they fix my sword?" I ask with a hint of desperation. He gives me a hesitant smile.
"Why are you being so weird about this? Come on, lead the way," I say as I gently push him out the Hall. William starts to walk, but then gives me a sigh.
"Who cares if they're weird. As long as they can fix Stabby, that's all that matters to me," I say as I carry the box containing Stabby with me. Following the begrudging William, we eventually make it to Iris Hall, or rather outside of it. Specifically, a small detached building that sits out on the opposite side of where the greenhouse is. Huh, never knew this place was here. It's awfully quiet for- The sudden deafening sound of hammering rips through my ears. What in the fuck?
William pulls me a step back, and the sound suddenly disappears. He then points to the ground where there's a chain of small crystals encircling the entire smithy.
"I see. Some sort of magical barrier that nullifies sound. Interesting. No wonder I never even knew about this place." William nods before handing me some round, soft pegs.
"What are these for?" He takes some similar-looking ones out and then pushes them into his ears.
"Oh, for the noise. Neat. Alright, let's go meet this mysterious person of yours," I say as I stuff the pegs into my ears. Taking a step into the circle, I'm bombarded by the sounds of hammering, but thankfully it's not as strong as it was before. Pushing forward, I eventually enter the smithy to find about six or seven people working away at various projects. We have shields, metal rods, swords, and what seems to be some sort of swirly-looking thing.
"So, which one's your weirdo?" I ask William. William sighs and then points to the back, where a bald man is hammering away at three different barrels at the same time. Odd, I didn't know they created barrels here. Well, as long as he can fix Stabby, I don't care. Support the author by searching for the original publication of this novel.
"Hello," I say, basically screaming at him. The bald man continues to hammer away at an impressive rhythm. It's almost as if he's creating music. Guess he can't hear me through all that noise. I'll have to try harder.
"HELLO!" I yell. Everyone in the room, along with the bald man, turns to me.
"Sorry, was trying to get your attention."
"Bro, you got some lungs on you. Have you ever considered being in a band?" the bald man, who I now realise is a third year, based on the soot-covered yellow uniform at his waist, says.
"No. Anyway, William here told me you could-""Oh, it's Willster. My main man. What are you doing here!? You need me to fix up your guitar again? What did I tell you about thrashing that thing too hard? What are you shaking your head for, Bro?" the bald man says at a million miles a minute.
"Guitar? What's that?" I ask, fully getting distracted by the new information.
"Oh, Bro! You don't know what a guitar is? I got to show you! Give me a sec," he says as he starts to rummage through a pile of junk. William looks over at me and then motions outside.
"Oh, no, no, no. I'm fine, Willster. The noise isn't bothering me at all," I say as I place my hand on his shoulder so he can't leave. The bald man pulls his head out of the junk along with a sleek metal instrument that looks like a lute, but sharper. Also, there are magic crystals inlaid into the frame. They look like the cheaper kind, but still, this thing must be expensive.
"This is a guitar, or more specifically, a magic guitar! Willster, show him how it's done!" he says as he throws the magic guitar at William. He catches it and shakes his head.
"What's wrong, Willster? Show me how it's done," I say with a devilish smile. William scratches his beard and then takes an oddly shaped magic crystal out of his pocket. Using the crystal, he strums the magic guitar. The sound that comes out of it overpowers the nearby hammering and even pushes me back a step or two. What happens next is… Honestly hard to describe. William plays a song filled with so much emotion and energy that I can feel it in my bones, both figuratively and literally.
"Holy shit. I didn't know you could do that, Willster," I say in total awe.
"Bro, that's not even his best. You should see him when he's on stage! The energy is wild! Oh, I'm George, by the way. Nice to meet you, Chosen One," George says as he wipes some sweat from his brow. William awkwardly hands the magic guitar back to George and then gestures to me.
"Oh, right. I was wondering if you could fix something for me?" I ask, remembering the whole point of coming here.
"Bro, fixing is what I do! Show me!" he says as he clears his workbench. Carefully, I place the box in front of him and show him the broken remnants of the Uneven Blade. George puts on some glasses and carefully examines the parts.
"Bro, what in the hells did you do to this thing?" The memory of various incidents flashes before my mind.
"A lot, but blocking an attack from a Dragon was what did him in," I [Lie], sort of. Technically, I didn't block an attack; I used Stabby to slow myself down after being flung by an attack. But I have to give Stabby some reputation here. I mean, how many swords can say they blocked an attack from a Calamity? Not many, that's for sure.
"Gnarly, but it seems like this is the end of the road for this bad boy, and what a way it was," George says as he looks up at me.
"You're saying there's nothing you can do? You can't fix him?" I ask with a hint of desperation.
"Well, it's less my lack of ability and more to do with the materials at hand, Bro. I need some heavy-duty materials to get this bad boy back in one piece, but I don't have any of that stuff," George says with a hint of frustration. William taps me on the side and then makes a circle with his hand.
"The coin you gave me? Yeah, I still have it. Why?" I ask as I pull it out from one of my hidden pockets.
"Bro, why didn't you tell me you had some Mythril? If we use that, we can definitely do this. Unless you don't want to?" George asks. This is a Mythril fucking coin? Why did William give me this? This thing would sell for so much gold, but… I look down at the remnants of Stabby. With a sigh, I flip George the coin.
"Nah, I want you to use it. Fix up Stabby for me," I say as I watch the gold coins disappear in my mind. George nods along as he gets to work.
"Righteous, Bro. Give me a couple of days, and I'll fix him up, good as new. Hells, he'll be stronger than ever before. Oh, do you want me to fix up this edge? Make it straight and even?"
"No, that's just the way I like it. Thanks. I'll be back later," I say as William and I leave the smithy. William eyes me as we exit the magical barrier.
"What's wrong?" He stares unflinching.
"Don't worry. I won't tell anybody about what I saw. Not a soul." With a sigh, he nods as he pats me on the back.
"Of course. We're friends after all…Willster," I [Taunt]. William gives me a death glare as I begin to holler.
