The doors to the Emperor's study open. The Emperor walks over to his desk and sits down. He looks over at the growing pile of paperwork and groans at the thought of how much paperwork he will have to deal with after this disaster. On top of that, he thinks of the Nobles who are sure to complain about the events of tonight.
"Things sure are different. Aren't they, Father?" he asks the portrait on the wall.
"But at the same time, some things don't change," he says as he thinks of the Purists. The Emperor opens a drawer in his desk and pulls out a small, worn chest. He opens it with care and looks inside. Letters from his wife and children, old medals from the war, a small pressed flower that his wife gave him, and a whole plethora of other keepsakes. Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon. The Emperor slowly pulls out a medal that does not belong to him.
One that was given to him so many years ago. Something he had not thought of until recently. He turns the purple medal in his hand. The purple brambles of it, almost piercing him. This medal does not belong to the Empire or any of the Kingdoms that came before it. Instead, it belongs to that of the Blight and a man who came from it.
"For a second I thought I had seen a ghost. The eyes may be different, but he's the spitting image of you, Jurix," he says to the medal. The doors to the study open.
"Honey, it's been a long day. Come to bed before you get even more grey hairs," the Empress says. The Emperor places the chest back in its place and walks over to his wife.
"I thought you liked the grey," he says as he picks her up.
"I do, but I'd like it better in our bed than behind a desk," she says with a smile. He kisses her as he carries her to their room.
"I can make that happen."
