He ignored the fancy nobles walking past him. He headed straight for the tall glass apartment building at the end of the street. It was the same luxurious building they had visited earlier. Anny lived in the penthouse suite on the very top floor. Ken reached the front entrance. Through the glass doors, he saw five security guards standing in the lobby. They wore crisp black suits. They had earpieces in their ears. They looked incredibly strict and alert.
Anny had obviously increased her security detail after the 13th Unit's first visit.
"Guards," Ken sighed lazily.
"Why is there always extra security? Do they really think a few guys in suits can stop anything? Dealing with them requires talking. Talking requires energy. I am officially skipping the conversation." Ken did not slow down. He casually strolled toward the glass doors. He used a very simple, totally effortless illusion magic. He wrapped an invisible field around his body. The glass doors slid open automatically. Ken walked right into the pristine lobby. His shoes scuffed softly on the red carpet.
The five security guards did not move. They did not raise their hands. They did not even look at him. To their eyes, the lobby was completely empty. The illusion wiped Ken from their vision entirely. Ken walked right past a guard, so close that his shoulder almost brushed the man's black suit. The guard just stared blankly at the wall.
"Excuse me," Ken whispered playfully as he passed them.
"Just a random ghost passing through. Do not mind me." He reached the private elevator. He pressed the button for the top floor. The doors opened with a soft chime. Ken stepped inside. The elevator zoomed upward smoothly and silently.
"I wonder if she has any good food in her fridge," Ken pondered as the numbers on the screen ticked higher.
"Rich people always have fancy cheese. Or maybe imported fruit. A snack would be a great way to start this interrogation." The elevator stopped. The doors slid open. Ken stepped directly into Anny's lavish penthouse apartment. The massive living room looked exactly the same as before. The white leather couches sat in the center. The crystal chandeliers sparkled. The huge windows offered a perfect view of the city. Anny was standing near the large window. She wore her elegant pale blue silk dress.
Her blonde hair fell perfectly down her back. But she was not crying. The sad, grieving girlfriend act was totally gone. She did not hold a silk handkerchief. Her face was completely blank. Her blue eyes were cold and sharp. She held a crystal glass filled with expensive, sparkling juice. She took a slow, calm sip. She looked entirely relaxed. Ken walked out of the elevator. The thick white rug muffled his footsteps. He dropped his invisibility illusion.
A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation. He did not announce himself immediately. Instead, he wandered over to her open kitchen area. The kitchen had sleek marble countertops and shiny silver appliances. He opened her large refrigerator.
"Wow," Ken said loudly. Anny jumped. She spun around so fast that she almost dropped her crystal glass. Juice splashed over the rim and hit the floor. Her eyes widened in pure, unfiltered shock. Ken stood in her kitchen. He held a small, golden box of premium chocolate truffles. He pulled a dark chocolate piece from the box and popped it into his mouth. He chewed happily.
"These are fantastic," Ken praised lazily. He pointed the chocolate box at her.
"You have great taste in desserts. The caramel filling is top-tier. Much better than the cheap candy I usually buy." Anny stared at him. She was totally bewildered. Her mind raced. She looked at the private elevator. The doors were closed. She had not heard the chime. She had not heard the guards call her.
"Who are you?!" Anny demanded. Her melodic voice turned harsh and shrill. She took a step backward.
"How did you get in here? My guards are supposed to secure the lobby!" Ken swallowed his chocolate. He slouched his shoulders and leaned his back comfortably against the marble kitchen counter.
"Your guards are currently enjoying a very peaceful shift," Ken replied casually. He took another truffle from the box.
"They are completely fine. I just walked right past them. They did not seem to notice me. I guess I just have a very forgettable face." Anny's breathing hitched. She recognized him now. He was the messy, untucked servant who had ruined her crying performance earlier today. He was the boy who drank iced coffee loudly from a plastic cup.
"You," Anny sneered. She gripped her glass tightly.
"You are Princess Iris's pathetic little helper. Get out of my apartment right now! I will call the Imperial Police! I will have you arrested for trespassing!"
"You can call whoever you want," Ken said calmly. He set the gold box down on the counter. He wiped his fingers on a clean white napkin.
"But the police will probably be very interested in what Luis has to say. We just left him at an abandoned warehouse. He was crying a lot. He told us everything, Anny." Anny's face went perfectly pale. The color drained from her cheeks completely. Her confident posture vanished. She knew exactly what Luis's confession meant. The ambush had failed. Her perfect, meticulously planned trap had totally collapsed.
"Luis is an idiot," Anny hissed through her teeth. Her beautiful face twisted into an ugly, hateful expression.
"He is weak. He is a pathetic fool. I knew I should not have trusted him with a task like this." Ken crossed his arms over his chest. He looked at her with sleepy, lazy eyes.
"He definitely is a fool," Ken agreed smoothly.
"He actually believed you loved him. He mutated himself into a giant lizard just to impress you. That is a terrible dating strategy. But his foolishness gave us the answers we needed. We know you orchestrated the murder. We know you set the trap." Anny realized she was cornered. She took a deep breath. She instantly changed her tactics. The cold, calculating woman vanished. The innocent, helpless victim returned in a split second. Tears sprang into her blue eyes. Her lower lip began to tremble.
She dropped her glass onto the floor. It shattered into pieces. She clasped her hands together in front of her chest.
"You do not understand!" Anny cried. Her voice was incredibly melodic and full of fake sorrow. She took a step toward Ken.
"Luis is lying! He forced me to help him! He threatened my life! He was obsessed with me! I had to do what he said, or he would have killed me just like he killed Carrion! I am just a victim! Please, you have to believe me!" Ken watched her perform. It was a brilliant, flawless act. A normal investigator would have felt sympathy. A normal knight would have lowered their weapon. Ken just let out a loud, dramatic yawn. He stretched his arms above his head. He looked entirely bored.
"Are you finished?" Ken asked lazily. Anny stopped crying. She glared at him. The fake tears dried up instantly.
