"Why?" Princess Iris asked softly. Her violet eyes were full of pity and confusion.
"Why did you betray Dr. Carrion? You were his childhood friend. Why did you set this trap for us?" Luis sobbed loudly. He clutched his bruised chest. He looked completely miserable.
"I hated him," Luis confessed. His voice was weak and trembling.
"I always hated him. Carrion was always the smart one. He always got the praise. He always got the money. I was just a nobody." He squeezed his eyes shut. More tears fell. The ugly truth finally spilled out of his mouth.
"But that is not why I did it," Luis cried.
"It was Anny. She was so beautiful. I was madly in love with her. But she chose him. She always chose him. I could not stand it." Naomi frowned in disgust.
"You murdered a brilliant scientist because you were jealous of his girlfriend?"
"She promised me!" Luis wailed pathetically. He slammed his fist weakly against the floor.
"Anny came to me! She said she was tired of him! She said he was paranoid and boring! She explicitly promised to date me if I helped her get rid of him! She promised we would share his fortune!" The entire 13th Unit stared at him in absolute shock.
"Anny?" Sayma asked politely, pushing her glasses up.
"The crying girlfriend? She ordered the assassination? She was the one who planned this entire ambush today?"
"Yes!" Luis sobbed.
"She manipulated me! She used me! It was all a lie! She never loved me!" The girls exchanged stunned looks. The innocent, grieving victim they had met in the luxurious apartment was entirely fake. She was not a victim at all. She was the manipulative mastermind behind the scientist's death. While the elite vanguard was completely distracted by the pathetic confession, Ken Eliot stood silently behind his metal crate. The goofy, lazy smile completely melted off his face.
His dark eyes turned incredibly cold and sharp. He processed the information in a fraction of a second. Anny was the real threat. She was the one tying the loose ends. If she knew this ambush failed, she would try to run away. She would destroy the remaining evidence. He could not let that happen. He needed to secure the truth before the girls even left the warehouse. Ken did not make a single sound. He did not say goodbye. He just stepped backward into the deepest, darkest shadow of the warehouse wall.
With absolute, god-like stealth, his body simply dissolved into the darkness. He vanished completely. Nobody heard him leave. Nobody noticed he was missing. If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it. The lazy slacker was gone. It was time for the true mastermind to pay a visit to the crying girlfriend in the Inner City.
Luis sobbed loudly on the cold concrete floor. His massive, mutated body had completely changed back to normal. He was just an ordinary, badly bruised man again. He clutched his chest with both hands. Tears streamed down his dirty face. The large warehouse was very quiet now. The chaotic sounds of battle had totally faded away. Naomi stood over him. She crossed her arms. She looked down at the crying man. She did not feel sorry for him at all. She felt incredibly annoyed. She spun her twin daggers in her hands.
She slid the sharp silver blades back into their sheaths. The metal clicked softly in the silent room. Princess Iris stepped forward. Her violet eyes were full of pity. She looked at the defeated man on the floor. She wanted answers. She needed the truth to solve the murder.
"You really did all this for a girl?" Laxmi asked. The fire user stood next to Zinia. She shook her head. She looked completely baffled by the situation.
"You mutated yourself into a giant monster because you were jealous? That is the saddest thing I have ever heard."
"She promised me," Luis whimpered. He wiped his nose on his torn brown sleeve.
"Anny promised we would be together. She manipulated me. She used my feelings." Sayma opened her neat notebook. She clicked her pen. She started writing down every single word Luis said. This was a vital confession. It proved Anny was the real mastermind behind the murder of Dr. Carrion. Ken Eliot stood in the back of the warehouse. He leaned against a rusted metal shipping crate. He watched the scene unfold from the shadows. His dark blue suit was slightly wrinkled. His shirt hung untucked over his belt.
He shoved his hands deep into his pockets. He felt around inside his left pocket. His fingers brushed against a small, wrapped piece of strawberry candy. It was one of the candies Elma had given him earlier. He pulled it out. He unwrapped it carefully and popped it into his mouth. The sweet strawberry flavor spread across his tongue.
"This candy is fantastic," Ken thought to himself casually. He chewed slowly.
"Elma really knows how to pick good snacks. But this interrogation is taking way too long. Luis is just crying and complaining. The real mastermind is sitting in a fancy apartment right now. Anny is the one pulling the strings. She is definitely tying up loose ends as we speak." Ken knew exactly what would happen next. If Anny realized her ambush failed, she would run away. She would pack her bags, destroy the evidence, and vanish from the capital city.
Princess Iris and the girls were too distracted by Luis to see the bigger picture.
"I need to go talk to her," Ken decided silently.
"I need to secure the truth before she escapes. But I cannot let my team see me leave." Ken looked at Naomi. She was busy asking Luis another question. Laxmi and Zinia were watching the warehouse doors. Sayma was focused entirely on her notes. Princess Iris was looking down at the crying man. Nobody was looking at the dark corner of the warehouse. Nobody was looking at Ken. He took a slow, quiet step backward. He merged seamlessly with the shadows. He did not cast a visible spell. He did not make a single sound.
He simply erased his presence from the room. In the blink of an eye, the lazy slacker totally vanished. Ken teleported. He reappeared in a completely different part of the capital city. He stood in a clean, quiet alleyway in the Diamond District. The bright afternoon sun shined down on the white cobblestones. The air smelled like expensive perfume and fresh blooming flowers. It was a massive contrast to the dirty, oily warehouse he had just left. Ken stepped out of the alley. He walked onto the main street.
He slouched his shoulders and kept his hands in his pockets. He looked around the wealthy neighborhood.
"This place is too shiny," Ken mumbled to himself. He looked down at his shoes. A thin layer of warehouse dust covered the leather.
"My shoes are dirty. I look like I just rolled around in a sandbox. The rich people are going to stare at me."
