The prototype had proved the concept and cracked my interface and bought us nothing except the knowledge that it could be done, which was the most dangerous kind of knowledge: enough to try again. The shattered containment model drifted between us.
"The containment shell failed at junction..." I felt Carl bending high space into a frown.
"... twenty-three." Another model appeared.
"... Thirty-one." Another.
"... Seven." The debris field model slowly lit up with glowing red markers. Carl stopped talking.
"Oh." More markers appeared.
"Oh wow." He rotated the model.
"That's... actually an embarrassing number of catastrophic failures." I checked the charge percentage climbing across my display.
"How embarrassing?"
"Exceptionally."
"I had that impression."
"No, I mean statistically we were lucky. Any one of these should have failed first. None of them agreed on an order." He zoomed into another glowing point.
"I expected maybe one junction failure. Two if we'd overestimated the pressure gradient." Another marker turned red.
"I don't..." Carl spun the model again.
"... Why are there so many junctions?" Three more wireframe versions appeared around the model.
"I didn't need segmented geometry. I could have printed smooth joints. Or rings. Or..." He stopped. I had the feeling he was staring into nothing.
"... Why did I decide modular assembly was the right tradeoff?" I folded my arms.
"I'm guessing because Past Carl was an idiot."
"Complete idiot," he agreed, automatically. A beat.
"... Wait." The shimmer sharpened, offended.
"No. Past Carl had manufacturing constraints. Present Carl is calling Past Carl an idiot without considering..." Three more models bloomed into existence.
"... material limits... transport geometry... thermal expansion..." His words began stepping on each other.
"... unless transport wasn't actually the constraint because if we'd built in parts then the maximum section size wouldn't have mattered and then the junction count becomes completely self-inflicted which means..." On the display, the charge ticked up another percent. I felt the number in my molars.
"Carl." Nothing. He was already sketching stress vectors in empty space.
"Carl."
"... unless the first failure wasn't the junction." The model froze.
"Oh."
"The bulk weld." Another pause.
"... No." He erased half the model.
"The weld failed because the junction failed." Another erase.
"Or..." I looked back at the star.
"How many engineering dissertations until we build another one?" The stress vectors stopped.
"What?"
"I don't care which junction had an existential crisis." I pointed at the star.
"I care about the one that's still trying to kill us." The shimmer stuttered twice.
"... Right." The tone leaked something sheepish.
"Better material."
"And?" He sighed.
"... Fewer junctions." I nodded.
"I was hoping for space duct tape." He looked genuinely horrified.
"Morgan."
"The silver kind."

"So you're saying we should bring two rolls." The sterilization timer said four hours. Maybe fewer. The rate was accelerating. * The system was already dead around us. Carl confirmed what my perception was reading through the debris field: the wardens had consumed everything. The immune response, escalating with every extraction, had gone autoimmune. Every trace of biological activity in the system's margins had been scoured clean.
We were the only things left with an energy signature worth eating, and the swarm was thinning because there was nothing else left to eat. The wardens I'd been fighting since Day 3 had killed everything I hadn't.
"If the remaining stored energy dissipates naturally," Carl said, "the warden population will propagate beyond the system boundary. An immune response with no pathogen and no boundary." Absorbing what remained was containment. The engineer who broke things was the firewall. The firewall had four hours. * I pressed my hands together. Not a decision. The prototype had been designed: containment shell, aperture geometry, flow topology, all the careful engineering Carl and I had spent hours refining. The prototype had been adequate. "I need to recalculate. The conversion efficiency exceeds my modeling parameters."

"You have built a mouth that eats stars." Carl's voice caught.
"And I do not know how to close it."
"Carl, when I said I wanted to build from need instead of design, this is not what I had in mind."
"The need was genuine. The result is proportional to the need. I would suggest filing a complaint, but you are currently the complaint." The overlay, small, in the corner: Ticket 218: the relief fold was rated for design loads. This was not a design load. The ticket remains open. * The orb touched the star's energy lattice and began to feed. I felt it through both hands.
The star's output, the seven-layered fusion lattice I'd been studying since we entered orbit, redirecting toward the sphere between my palms the way water redirects toward a drain, the channel between star and orb a clean gold that hummed at the frequency of a tuning fork struck against something that refused to be out of tune. Smoothly. Naturally. As if the star's energy had been waiting for this exit and I'd simply provided the address. Synthesis climbed. 74%. 76%. 78%.
The numbers moving with a fluidity that the prototype's stuttering uptake hadn't approached. The orb was processing stellar energy at a rate that made the prototype look like a child's toy held up to a waterfall. The star tasted like mathematics. "I designed it."
"You didn't design it. You needed it. What you needed was maximum throughput. The interface built to the need. Maximum throughput does not include a throttle." I tried anyway. Pictured the aperture narrowing. Pictured the flow reducing. Pictured the star surviving. The orb pulsed brighter. The flow increased. I tried to pull my hands apart. To collapse the aperture, destroy the sphere, break the connection the way I'd break a circuit: disconnect the conduit. My hands didn't move. The orb was holding them.
The geometry of the white hole had anchored into my interface at both palms, locking my hands in position the way a magnetic clamp locks onto a hull. I was the containment. "Carl."
"I see it." The clinical voice was gone.

"What happens if it expands without constraint?" The pause was 1. 8 seconds. Longer than anything I'd measured from Carl since the Cemetery.
"The energy density of an unconstrained inversion at this magnitude would produce a cascading expansion event. A new origin point." He stopped. Recalculated.
"The colloquial term would be 'Big Bang.' I do not use the term loosely." My hands were six inches apart. Between them, a sphere of white light the size of a grapefruit was eating a star and the only thing preventing it from eating everything else was my palms. The overlay, in the upper corner of my vision, in the smallest font it had: I do not have a category for this event. I am creating one. Classification pending. Your continued functionality at this threshold exceeds all prior models. Increasing confidence.
* Slotin again. The core didn't care about the screwdriver or the man holding it. The physics were the physics. My hands were the screwdriver. The orb was the Core. And the Core was so much larger than Slotin's. Slotin's mistake would have killed a room. My mistake would rewrite the address of everyone I'd ever known. 85%.
The star's luminosity dropping as I watched, the light dimming, the higher-plane extensions collapsing inward one by one, each collapse shedding a different shade of exhausted light, the last one the color of a penny found in a parking lot that nobody is going to pick up. A feedback loop with no brake. My best engineering, my most perfect fabrication, eating a star because I'd built it too well to stop.
"Containment is at capacity," Carl said. The voice stripped to its frame. The voice of a processor running every thread at maximum and finding maximum insufficient.
"The energy throughput exceeds my containment ceiling. I am managing overflow into secondary channels."
"How much overflow?"
"All of it. The secondary channels were not designed for this volume. They are holding." The word doing more structural work than the thing it described. 88%. 90%. The star's core stuttered. A white flash through the orb, the brightness past anything my rebuilt eyes could process without Carl's filters, and the taste shifted from mathematics to something older. Something that tasted like the moment before the universe decided to exist.
The flavor of potential, concentrated into a sphere between my hands, flowing through my interface at a rate that was rewriting the definition of what my interface could carry. My right hand screamed. The scratch from the prototype widened under the load. The hairline fracture vibrating at the same harmonic frequency that had cracked the prototype, except the prototype had been a device I could drop. This was my hand. I couldn't drop my hand. The distortion was visible: light curving where light should travel straight, distances compressing near the orb and stretching at the edges, the local geometry of the universe buckling under the density of a thing that shouldn't exist in it.
"Carl, I need you to tell me my hands are steady."
"Your hands are exhibiting a tremor of 0. 3 millimeters. Within operational tolerance."
"Are they steady?" The pause was half a degree. My right hand climbing without my input, as it sometimes did between the question and the answer, the warmth arriving in the pause where the words hadn't yet.
"Your hands are steady, Morgan. You are the steadiest thing in this system. Hold." 92%. 93%. Carl's shimmer was doing something I'd never seen: cycling through colors, the blue-white glow warping through frequencies my visual cortex read as strain. The shimmer flickering under computational loads that exceeded its display parameters. Seventeen valid interpretations of the same stellar collapse data arriving simultaneously, each one internally consistent, none of them compatible. Crossword static.
Carl's processing trying to hold seventeen truths at once while running containment at 110% on a white hole that was eating a star between my palms. 95%. The star dimming fast now. The light that had illuminated this system since before complex life existed anywhere fading in stages, each stage a distinct sensory event: a smell like hot glass, a sound like a piano wire breaking, a pressure on my eardrums with no air behind it. The sterilization protocol reversed.
The weapon the world had been charging powered down because I was consuming the power source. The fever broke because the infection swallowed the thermometer. 96%. 97%. 98%. The star died.
