All wrong. If this were a movie, I wouldn't believe the render. Did anyone check the CGI budget on this one? I stood on the edge of something that shouldn't exist on a volcanic exoplanet. The foundry (if that was even the right word) rose from the rocky plain like a mistake the planet had failed to correct. It looked like a place where raw materials were forged into finished work.
Massive angular shapes, built from materials I had no name for, jammed into a wound in the ground like someone had stabbed the planet and filled the hole with Lego blocks the size of skyscrapers. They caught the shifting light and held it at angles that made even my rebuilt eyes water. Half-buried in cooled lava flows millions of years old, but the exposed surfaces showed no weathering. No erosion. No oxidation. Whatever this was, it was older than the lava that tried to bury it. And it was still intact.
The air changed at the boundary, a few meters perimeter where the volcanic grit gave way to something smoother, almost polished. The smell hit first: hot dust and something electrical. Reminded me of a bio lab in college. The sharp tang of metal that had been holding a charge longer than most stars had been burning. My palm registered it before my conscious mind did: a low, subsonic hum through the dimensional rift, like pressing your hand against a speaker cabinet playing a note too deep to hear.
The frame was thicker here. Sharper. It felt like a color I could see with my hands and taste with my eyes. It was the color of a suitcase packed by a small child to last eternally in a hurry. The wall between here and whatever lay ninety degrees above was thinner, the way ice thins over deep water, except the ice was overhead, and the ocean was on top of it. My overlay (Carl's jury-rigged heads-up display, still running on what amounted to a Wikipedia summary of human visual processing) flickered and shifted.
Radiation readings. Structural analysis. Energy density maps rendered in a color palette Carl had apparently borrowed from a 1990s video-game fansite. Neon green on electric purple. Unreadable, but enthusiastic.
"This is... significant." Carl's voice arrived in my skull with the forced casualness of someone who had been holding their breath for two hours and didn't want you to know.
"Significant like 'interesting geological formation' or significant like 'I've been steering us toward this the entire time and pretending it was your idea'?" The absence of a denial confirmed the second option.
"The site predates my civilization's presence here by approximately two hundred million years. The fabrication lineage is consistent with builder-era technology, the same engineering lineage that created the anchoring system. This is not salvage, Morgan. This is a primary source of material, information, and new templates." The overlay pulsed. Energy density readings climbed as I stepped closer. A structural wireframe of the foundry's interior populated, still in neon-on-purple.
"The energy concentration inside this structure is approximately thirty times what we harvested from the ship. Thirty times! The encoded information density is off the scales. And the fabrication templates alone could jump synthesis by four to eight percent, depending on extraction method and yield." Carl let that number hang. Four to eight percent. At the current synthesis (hovering around nine percent after the ship absorption and the folds), that meant potentially crossing the fifteen percent threshold.
Real equipment. Real capability. The end of the joke 'gear' era.
"There are also radiation pockets, normal and dimensional," Carl added, with the timing of a real estate agent mentioning the foundation cracks after you've already fallen in love with the kitchen.
"And some structural instability. And possible entropy zones where local physics may behave... creatively." Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
"Define 'creatively.'""I would prefer not to... but things like a recursive sunburn."
"A recursive sunburn?"
"It gives you a sunburn on all your angles. Inside your nose? Yes. Inside your stomach? Also, horribly yes." My stomach growled. The sound was absurd in context, a biological complaint filed by hardware that didn't know it had been upgraded, the body's version of legacy firmware generating error reports the new hardware had already resolved.
"I can suppress the hunger signal," Carl offered.
"The nutrient delivery system is already maintaining optimal metabolic function. The sensation is vestigial. I fixed food for you... You are welcome."
"Don't." The word came out harder than I intended. The stomach was wrong about the hunger. The stomach was also one of the last involuntary human things my body still did without Carl's permission.
"Leave it." The frame was thin here, but not uniformly. A single angle could be thick and thin at the same time, and my rebuilt hands read all of it at once: every layer at every point arriving as a new color, a new sound, a new taste. Like drinking from a firehose with all five senses. It felt bad and good at the same time, and I stood fixed in place, overwhelmed, not knowing where to start. * Carl mapped the interior in a few seconds. Each layer that had frozen me was a simple read for him.
I was blind, and Carl was waiting for me to stop rubbing my eyes and get to work. The wireframe populated: seven major chambers, interconnected by corridors that branched at angles my college geometry book couldn't explain to a human eye. A few fabrication bays. A couple of power cores, dormant but intact. Material storage vaults that existed in one place and many at the same time.
And threading through all of it, like veins in a body, conduit lines carrying residual energy that had been cycling through the structure for hundreds of millions of years with nowhere to go.
"Optimal extraction path." The overlay highlighted a route in red: straight through the center, chamber by chamber, absorbing everything sequentially. Fast. Efficient. Maximum yield.
"Estimated time: thirty-five minutes. Estimated synthesis gain: six to eight percent. Approve extraction?" The approval flashed before me. Come on, just say yes, and it will all be over. That was the subtext. I studied the wireframe's structure. I wanted to press yes, but I paused.
"Carl."
"Yes?"
"Show me the stress analysis. Weight distribution. What's holding this place up?" The wireframe shifted. New overlays appeared: structural stress mapped in gradients from blue to red. And I saw it immediately, a fracture line in the suggested plan. The seven chambers weren't independent. They were cascade-coupled, each chamber's integrity dependent on the adjacent ones. Pull one, and the stress redistributes. Pull three in sequence, and the redistribution compounds. Pull five and...
"Oh, I see the problem," Carl mumbled.
"It's a failure chain. Serial-only, no redundancy. Every chamber is structural for the next one. Your optimal extraction path goes straight through the dependency chain. By chamber four, the stress redistribution compounds past tolerance. Pop."
"I am aware of the structural risk. The probability of cascade failure is approximately..."
"Don't give me a probability. Show me what happens to chambers six and seven if we pull chambers one through four at maximum extraction rate." The simulation ran. Chambers six and seven collapsed. The stress redistribution exceeded the ancient structure's tolerance almost instantly, and the remaining sections imploded into areas Carl hadn't wanted to define, because in an entropy zone, when critical structures failed, the boundary didn't just thin; it tore. Localized fracture between layers.
Physics was doing things it wasn't supposed to do in the space I was standing in.
"The probability was eleven percent," he said, quietly.
"Doesn't look like eleven percent to me. The model says fail."
"The yield at maximum extraction is significantly..."
"Nope."
"Those conduit lines are structural. You pull too much, too fast, and they resonate." Carl was quiet for a moment. When he spoke, the annoyance had been replaced by something closer to assessment.
"You are proposing selective extraction. Chambers one through three only."
"Chambers one through three. Four percent synthesis instead of eight. I can live with four percent. Literally. We go back after and take our time. We can model it and maybe get the others."
"Proceed with selective extraction. Chambers one through three." The sound was someone picking their glasses off the ground after they had been smacked off their face. No debate. No argument. Just acceptance. That was new.
