"So we stay under critical torsion."
"We stay well under. And because margins are not a feeling, the winding gets a governor: a relief fold spliced into the loop, deliberately weaker than every other element. If torsion approaches the threshold, the relief fold unravels first and spills the excess into the layers as neutral flux. A shear pin. It costs us eleven percent of reservoir capacity."
"The timer doesn't love eleven percent."
"The timer is not the one holding the mouth." Flat. Not negotiable. It was the first time all morning Carl had refused to price something against the countdown, and I filed the refusal under things that told you what a person had seen.
"Then we size the governor for the design load and accept the capacity hit."
"For the design load," Carl said.
"I want the qualifier noted. A governor rated for the design is not rated for improvisation. If you ever build one of these from need instead of design, build the governor first." The overlay, quietly, in the corner: Ticket 218: reservoir relief fold rated for design loads only. Status: open. I am told this is acceptable. I have recorded who told me. I let the spiral geometry settle in my head, seven stages stepping down.
"Show me the closest matches in your archive."
"Two of the eleven successful designs match your bandwidth and your timer. Design 17 used eight stages, per-stage compression 1. 30, total ratio 8. 2: 1. Three weld failures during operation, all repaired in-flight. Ran forty-three seconds before its host released it. Design 23 used seven stages, per-stage 1. 375, total 9. 3: 1, no in-flight repairs, ran thirty-eight seconds before release. Both viable for your bandwidth."
"Which is more efficient?"
"Design 23 by approximately twelve percent. Less mass, fewer stages, simpler fabrication. Design 17 is more conservative: the additional stage absorbs more shock if a weld fails."
"What went wrong on Design 23's last attempt?"
"Fabrication imperfection at the stage three-four weld. The host completed the operation. The prototype required reconstruction afterward. Failure mode: the same one I am proposing you reinforce." I turned the two designs over against each other.
"So if we go with 23 and double-reinforce three-four, we get a failure mode you've already identified, with a known fix."
"Yes."
"And if we go with 17, we get more margin but lose twelve percent efficiency."
"Yes." The decision was already made.
"23. Reinforce three-four."
"Confirmed." I sketched the shell against the inside of my eyelids. Carl's framework, my hands. The containment shell's outer geometry settled into something my engineering eye recognized: a faceted vessel, the seven compression stages stacked like the chambers of a heart, each one stepping pressure down before passing it to the next. The aperture at the throat, narrow, 5: 3. The interface input at the base. A machine I could feel the shape of before I'd built it.
"Where are the welds highest-stress?"
"Between stage three and stage four. The midpoint compression delta is the largest in the topology. If the welds fail anywhere, they fail there first."
"Twice the bonding tolerance at three-four. Other welds at standard. Save the bandwidth for the geometry."
"Confirmed." Our design clicked into place. The way good engineering does: each element critical, nothing decorative, the stability a product of the math rather than a feeling about the math. At 70. 1% synthesis, the continuity coating I'd filed under later at the Cemetery finally came off the shelf: I integrated the counter-texture directly into the containment shell. Passive. Structural. Because the Tracker didn't track by signal. It felt for you.
Something up in the higher dimensions dragging its attention across the world the way fingertips drag along a wall in the dark, and every seam, every edge, every discontinuity told the fingertips where you were. The shell's geometry gave the fingertips nothing: one continuous surface, answering pressure with the same value everywhere, woven in like rebar in concrete.
This containment should leave the feeling-for-me nothing to feel as a byproduct of its own operation, automatically, like waste heat from a running engine. Something adjusted the phase alignment. A refinement arriving through the layer with the precision of a tuning fork: phase-cancellation instead of noise. Silence instead of shouting. The difference between jamming a radio and making the radio think nothing was broadcasting. The counter-texture solved the shell. It did not solve the exhaust.
A tap this size sheds waste flux no matter how clean the cascade runs, entropy with nowhere to go, and dumping it into three dimensions meant a thermal plume with my name on it, visible to anything that read heat, which after the appraisal in the Cemetery I assumed was everything. "The star is the loudest thing in the neighborhood. We hide behind its voice. Route the exhaust back along the capillary and let it off as turbulence in the root system. The star churns its own layers just by existing. You said so. Our garbage rides inside its noise." Carl processed that for longer than the idea deserved, which was how I knew it wasn't stupid.
"Exhaust disguised as stellar turbulence. The signature analysis supports it. The constraint is volume: the disguise only holds while our turbulence stays under the star's. We throttle the tap to the star's noise floor or the exhaust stops being weather and starts being a message."
"How much does the throttle cost?"
"Roughly a fifth of the theoretical tap rate." A fifth, paid to stay invisible, on a countdown. I paid it. The Cemetery had taught me what being noticed cost, and that bill had come with interest. * We bench-tested the tap before we trusted it with the real cascade, because I had stopped checking things nine times but I had not yet stopped checking them once. The candle tap: the thinnest capillary in perception range, a naked throat, no stages, no reservoir.
Flux stepped down by root selection alone, trickling into a test loop at a rate Carl described as "less energy than your toaster" and my hands read as a warm garden hose. Calibration data only. Twenty minutes of the interface learning what structured flux felt like before we asked it to drink from anything wider. It worked. That was the first surprise.
The throat held, the trickle ran clean, the numbers marched down the overlay in tidy columns, and for nineteen of the twenty minutes the most dangerous object in the solar system was boring. Minute twenty, the star hiccuped. Some deep convection cell turned over, the capillary's local pressure dipped, and for half a second the gradient between my test loop and the root pointed the other way. The flux reversed. Nothing dramatic.
A backward tug through the throat, my calibration data pouring itself politely toward the star, the garden hose discovering it was also a drain. The overlay flagged the flow arrow flipping. I killed the throat with my left hand before the tug could propagate, and sat there on five hundred kilometers of nothing, looking at a lesson.
"The gradient is a slope, not a pump," Carl said.
"Energy runs downhill in whichever direction downhill currently is. The star's pressure wobbles. Ours will too, every time the reservoir state changes. Any transient that puts our side higher than their side, and the tap runs backward."
"It's not a tap. It's a siphon. Siphons don't care which way." I flexed the hand that had done the killing.
"We need a check valve. Flow diode. Passes flux one direction, blocks the other, no moving parts, because moving parts at these energies are just parts that haven't broken yet."
"The archive has no valveless flux diode."
"Earth does. It's called a Tesla valve. A fixed geometry, all channels and returns: flow one way glides through, flow the other way gets folded back into itself and strangles on its own turbulence. We etch the same logic into a fold. Make the return path chiral, handed, so the backward direction has to corkscrew against the fifth axis and the forward direction never notices the corkscrew exists."
"Your species built a valve out of spite geometry."
"We built a lot of things out of spite geometry. It's kind of our material." Carl computed the chiral throat in four seconds, which for a new component class was Carl sprinting. We fabricated it as stage zero, ahead of the cascade, and re-ran the candle tap through it. Forward flow: clean, ninety-nine point seven percent transmission. Reverse test: the backward tug hit the corkscrew, folded into itself, and died two turns in.
The valve worked the first time, which should have told me something, because nothing else that day had. The overlay, in its tidy columns: Stage zero reflection residual: 0. 3%. Returned upstream as mirror flux. Within tolerance. Within tolerance. I read it, filed it under clean margins, and moved on. The line item did not look like a drumhead from where I stood. * Our preparations were complete. Containment modeled. An execution method mapped.
The engineers' silence after the last equation resolved, the exhale before the test. The star waited. The math was done. My hands, leaking, warm, 0. 2 degrees from becoming something else, were ready to do the job. The asterisk from the flood was visible, but the warmth was genuine, and trusting warmth from someone whose arguments came pre-assembled was exactly the engineering mistake I cataloged for fun.
At the peak of the containment process, when the stellar energy flow was modeled at its maximum and my right hand was running hotter than it had since the cave: a smell of chamomile tea. Old paper. The olfactory signature of a reading room that had never existed in this solar system. The warning scent I'd learned to recognize: an Echo was coming. A page appeared. A perceptual overlay, translucent, occupying the same visual layer as Carl's interface but in a different hand.
Diagrams I couldn't read, notation in a system I didn't recognize, the clean lines of a technical document produced by someone who cared about margins and font consistency. The page had the quality of patient professional disapproval, as if the stellar channeling technique I was about to attempt was technically correct but stylistically unrefined. A whisper, barely present over the star's energy signature: "Page forty-seven. Containment ratio should be 7: 3, not 5: 3. Honestly."
A tone of a librarian who has watched too many students make the same mistake and has stopped being polite about it. My first peer reviewer was older than the star I was about to eat and still had stronger opinions about margins than any living colleague. The academic impulse, it turned out, survived extinction events that stars did not. The page dissolved. Diagrams, scribbled notations, disapprovingly narrow margins, gone before I could catalog the details. But the ratio stayed: 7: 3.
A persistent hum in the containment math, the way a correct answer sits in the back of your head before you've finished the problem. Carl's design used a 5: 3 ratio for the aperture flow. Minor adjustments. I made them. I didn't know why they mattered yet. I would. Carl's overlay flashed a diagnostic I'd never seen: UNAUTHORIZED PERCEPTUAL INPUT DETECTED. ORIGIN: UNKNOWN. "That was not mine," Carl said. The voice was quiet, the quiet of someone encountering a phenomenon in their own domain, their own interface, their own system, that they did not author and cannot explain.
"Something accessed your visual cortex through a channel I did not build. The input was structured. It had formatting."
"It looked like a textbook page."
"It looked like a competent textbook page. The formatting was consistent with high-level technical documentation. The notation system predates my civilization's written record." A pause. The pause of a four-billion-year-old consciousness encountering something older.
"I do not know what just evaluated your stellar channeling technique and found it wanting." I didn't have time to process it. The star demanded everything. But the page number filed itself without my assistance: forty-seven. A reference to a document I'd never seen, in a library that existed as voicemail from a dead civilization. The Echo's opinion of my technique was implicit. I was passing the exam with a C. Two beings on the edge of a star. The math done. The hands warm. The gap at 0. 2 degrees.
