I reached for the frame. Nothing like the fifty-three practice runs. Those had been tentative: fingertips against a boundary, learning its shape, memorizing its texture the way you memorize a combination lock. This was different. This was the loop shifting from Practice to Execute, and the Execute had weight to it. Consequence. The kind of weight that made the air in the cave taste different, sharper, like a lightning strike compressed into a single breath. Left hand first. The cool one. The precise one.
I let it find the frame's surface the way a carpenter lets a plane find wood grain, not forcing, just following. The frame responded. The dimensional boundary bent toward my palm like a soap film, elastic and responsive and impossibly thin. Right hand second. The warm one. Carl's fingerprint, running hotter than it should have been, the way it did sometimes for reasons I hadn't learned to read yet. It touched the frame and the frame sang. A resonance.
Something between a violin harmonic and the hum of a transformer under load. Both hands on the frame. Left for direction. Right for power. The split-function approach that the engineer in me had spent all night designing and the terrified part of me had spent all night trying not to think about.
"Fold integrity ninety-nine point seven," Carl said.
"Hand calibration nominal. Energy cascade within parameters. You're... Morgan, this is looking..."
"Don't say it."
"... acknowledged." I pushed. The frame didn't resist. It unfolded. The overlay went white. Every overlay, every diagnostic, every piece of data Carl had been projecting collapsed into a single undifferentiated field of nothing. For 1. 3 seconds, though I would only learn the number later, because in the moment there was no duration at all, I existed in a place that wasn't a place. A fold in the fabric of local spacetime that my hands had opened like pulling apart the pages of a book to read the spine.
Inside the fold, a color: skipping a line on a page of a book and not realizing it until two paragraphs later, except the page was three-dimensional space and the line you skipped was the part of reality that connects A to B. No sound. No temperature. No proprioception. My body was a concept my brain remembered but couldn't currently verify. The fold was a shortcut so illegal the laws of physics refused to look directly at it. Then the world came back. All of it. At once. * The cave was gone.
The basalt bowl, the breach, the cathedral of black glass: replaced by open sky and volcanic plain. I was standing (barely) on a ridge of cooled magma that overlooked a vast depression filled with something that glinted in the morning light. Something older than metal or glass, with the visual texture of technology that had been old when Carl's civilization was young. The overlay was screaming with alarms.
Altitude markers, compass bearings, distance calculations, all of it flooding in at once, the overlay equivalent of someone waking up from a blackout and checking all their pockets. The target site was 4. 1 kilometers from the cave. I was standing 6. 7 kilometers south-southeast of it. Total displacement: 11. 2 kilometers. I'd overshot, then skewed. Like throwing a dart at a board left-handed while blindfolded and slightly drunk: the dart had hit the wall behind the board, but at least it was in the right room.
And then the nausea hit. Not stomach nausea. Sensory nausea. Colors had weight. The wind made a sound closer to geometry than acoustics, and my auditory cortex was producing something between a pipe organ and a dial-up modem. My right hand was still glowing. Thermal variance spiked to +4. 8 degrees C, pulsing in a rhythm that matched nothing biological. Constitution 23 caught me. Straining. Holding. But holding. The nausea crested. Colors lost their weight. Wind became wind again. I was on my knees.
I didn't remember kneeling. The overlay stabilized. Carl's diagnostics flooded back in, and I could read the relief in the data before he said a word: FOLD COMPLETE. DISPLACEMENT: 11. 2 KM. TARGET DEVIATION: 6. 7 KM SSE. Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation. FOLD INTEGRITY: 98. 4%. SENSORY FEEDBACK: ELEVATED. HAND CALIBRATION: NOMINAL. And beneath all of that, in smaller text, the line I needed most: DIMENSIONAL WOUND STATUS: NONE DETECTED. No cracks in reality.
No planet-cracking dramatic. Just a rough landing, a sensory hangover, and 6. 7 kilometers of hiking.
"Morgan." Carl's voice, and the steadiness in it was artificial; I could hear the processing power he was spending to keep it level.
"Breathe. In for four. Hold for four. Out for four. The sensory overload is your perception trying to process eleven dimensions through a three-dimensional lens. It will settle." I spat blood into the black sand. Pushed myself up on one arm. The hand was still running hot, still pulsing, and the glow cast my shadow in two directions at once for a moment before settling.
"Scale of one to ten," I said.
"How badly did I just break the universe?"
"Zero. Zero cracks. Zero dimensional propagation events. Zero catastrophic failures." The shimmer brightened with something close to wonder.
"You folded space, Morgan. 11. 2 kilometers in 1. 3 seconds. The deviation is... first-fold drift is typically 40 to 60 percent of range. You were at sixty."
"I was aiming for 100 percent."
"Everyone aims for 100 percent. The universe rounds down." I almost laughed. Would have, if my diaphragm wasn't still convinced it had experienced eleven dimensions of pressure change in under two seconds. Instead I settled for a sound that was approximately laughter-adjacent and sat back on my heels, staring at my hands. I folded space. With the hands Carl built. Right hand dominant, higher energy output; it pulled the fold toward its stronger signal.
Like driving a car that drifts right because one tire has more pressure. Compensate: lead with the left for directionality, right for power. 6. 7 kilometers to the target. Close enough to walk if the second fold fails.
"Carl."
"I know what you're going to say."
"Then you know the answer."
"Morgan, the prudent approach would be to walk the remaining distance, analyze the telemetry from the first fold, develop a corrective model, and..."
"And what? Wait? File it under later?" I stood up. The world was steady now. The nausea was gone, replaced by something else: a clean, sharp clarity that felt like the first breath after a long dive.
"I have a theory. Right hand pulled the vector southeast because it was outputting 2. 3 times the directional force. So I lead with the left. Cool hand for direction, warm hand for power. Split the functions."
"That's... that is actually a reasonable hypothesis."
"It's not a hypothesis. It's a calibration adjustment. I'm an engineer, Carl. I know how to debug asymmetric systems."
"Your hands explain half the vector," Carl said.
"I ran the decomposition while you were spitting blood. Hand asymmetry accounts for 2. 9 kilometers of drift, southeast. The remaining 3. 8 went due south, and your hands have no south."
"Then what has south?"
"The medium. The layers are not isotropic. They have structure, preferred directions, laid down when this region of the manifold cooled. My people called it..." a pause while the translation worked "... the nearest concept is grain. Wood has it. Rolled steel has it. Space has it, one layer up. A fold does not cross the layers in a straight line any more than a saw crosses oak in a straight line. It follows the easy direction. It drifts with the grain."
"You said first-fold accuracy is 40 to 60 percent off. You said it like a constant."
"It is a constant. Across every recorded host, every anatomy, every era."
"Then it was never about anybody's hands." I looked at my palms, revising the theory with the specific pleasure of finding the real bug under the obvious one.
"A universal miss rate means a universal cause. Everyone's first fold drifts because nobody's first fold has met the local grain yet."
"My civilization solved it with charts. Grain maps, maintained for every serviced region." He stopped.
"We are not in a serviced region."
"So no map." I picked up a piece of basalt the size of a thumb.
"Then we don't guess. We instrument it."
"Instrument what, precisely?"
"The grain. Fold cost scales with mass, right? Moving me eleven kilometers nearly emptied the morning's budget. What does moving this cost?" Carl computed.
"Effectively nothing. But folding a rock accomplishes..."
"A tracer." The idea arrived whole, the way the good ones do, wearing work boots.
"We fold the pebble at the waypoint. Dead center, no compensation. It drifts. We measure where it lands, and the drift is the grain, read directly, here, today, in this weather. Sailors did it with smoke. Artillery did it with ranging shots. I'm doing it with a rock." The overlay went quiet in the specific way that meant Carl was searching the archive.
"Four billion years of fold telemetry," he said slowly, "and there is no entry for this. My people never probed the grain. They never needed to. They had the charts, so nobody ever stood in an unmapped region holding a rock." Something shifted in his voice, the sound of a very old mind meeting a new thing.
"You are about to run an experiment my civilization skipped."
"Your civilization had maps. I have a rock. Cheap data beats good theory. Log the landing." The fold took a flick of intent, barely a breath of energy, the frame bending around an object with no opinions about dignity. The pebble vanished. The overlay tracked the arrival: 340 meters of range, landing 116 meters south of dead center.
"Drift: due south, thirty-four percent of range," Carl said.
"Consistent with your telemetry. Applying inverse offset. With your hand-lead correction..." The targeting crosshairs shifted twice, once for my hands, once for the world.
"... compounded solution ready." Two corrections. One for the machine, one for the medium. Every system I'd ever debugged came down to that split eventually: the part that was your fault and the part that was the universe's, and the fix only worked once you stopped billing them to the same account. I looked at the green waypoint pulsing on the overlay. 6. 7 kilometers.
"Same protocols. Five percent threshold. You monitoring every microsecond." The overlay cycled. Busy, then simple, then busy again. Carl was thinking fast.
"The sensory feedback will be worse the second time," he said.
"Your perception is already primed. The synesthetic bleed..."
"Constitution 23."
"... will test it."
"Then let it be tested." I flexed both hands. The frame was already there under my fingertips, waiting.
"Carl, I just folded spacetime with my bare hands. We're not walking." A pause. The longest one yet. And then:"Adjusting fold protocol. Left-hand primary for directional vector. Right-hand secondary for power injection. Five percent deviation threshold active." The overlay populated with new data: a targeting overlay I hadn't seen before, green crosshairs centered on the waypoint.
"And Morgan?"
"Yeah?"
"If your knees hit the ground again, I'm noting it in the telemetry as 'voluntary geological survey.'""Deal." I reached for the frame.
