Recap: You escaped the Side Chamber into the corridor. Grumble is chasing you with fire. You voted to REGURGITATE GRIB'S GEARS to create a slip hazard. Desperation breeds creativity. And also stomach acid. I stopped sliding. I turned my lid slightly toward the pursuing goblins. The torchlight was getting brighter, casting long, flickering shadows down the corridor. I could feel the heat radiating from the flames. It made my wood itch. Okay, stomach, I thought. You took the goblin. Now give me the trash.
I focused on the contents of my digestive vat. Grib was currently being marinated in acid, but his gear—the heavy granite rock and the dirty leather loincloth—wasn't breaking down yet. SYSTEM NOTIFICATIONSkill Used: RegurgitateCost: 1 StaminaCurrent SP: 11/20 I contracted. My lid shuddered. PLOTCH. A mixture of slime, acid, leather, and stone erupted from my maw. It landed squarely in the middle of the narrow corridor, right between me and the pursuers. It glistened in the torchlight.
It smelled like a locker room floor that hadn't been cleaned since the Mage-Emperor War.
"Watch out!" Nose Ring yelled. Too late. The first warrior stepped right into the puddle. His foot went out from under him like he was on ice. WHAM. He hit the stone hard. His torch skittered away, landing in a dry patch of moss. The moss hissed and started to smoke. The second warrior tried to stop. He slipped on the loincloth. He flailed, dropping his spear. Chief Grumble didn't slip. He was smarter than that. He planted his feet and jumped over the mess. But the hesitation was enough.
"Curse you!" Grumble roared. He sounded further away now. I didn't wait to see if he landed the jump. I turned back to the corridor ahead and pushed. Scrape. Scrape. Scrape. Unauthorized use of content: if you find this story on Amazon, report the violation. My stamina was dipping. My mana was ticking down as I kept my tremorsense active. I needed to find cover. I needed to find safety. But the vibrations ahead… they weren't getting quieter. They were getting louder. Skitter. Skitter. Squeak.
Hundreds of tiny claws on stone. I slid around a corner into a wider cavern. The ceiling rose high above, lost in darkness. The floor here was covered in straw and old bones. And eyes. Hundreds of glowing red eyes reflected my internal perception. Giant rats. They weren't just rats. They were the size of terriers. Some were bigger. They were sniffing the air. They smelled the blood on my lid. They smelled the goblin acid dripping from my hinge. And behind me, I heard Grumble's voice echo down the tunnel.
"Leave the box! Get the torches! Burn the tunnel if you have to!" He wasn't chasing me anymore. He was trying to smoke me out. I was trapped between a hobgoblin with arsonistic tendencies and a swarm of hungry rodents. One of the rats, larger than the rest, stepped forward. It had a scar over one eye and a piece of rusty blade tied to its tail. The Rat King. He chittered. It sounded like laughter. I was Level 1 (almost 2). He was Level 2. He had teeth. I had teeth. He had numbers. I had…
a rusty coin I already spent. SYSTEM NOTIFICATIONThreat Detected: Rat King Pack (Level 2)Threat Detected: Goblin Fire Squad (Behind)Recommendation: Do Not Engage. Thanks, System. Really helpful. The Rat King took another step forward. His pack fanned out around him. They weren't attacking yet. They were… curious? Or maybe they smelled the goblin inside me and wanted seconds. Grumble's goblins were lighting bundles of straw behind me. Smoke began to curl around my base. It stung. Wood smoke. My smoke.
I had to choose a side. Or choose a hole. Current Stats: HP: 13/15 (Smoke irritation starting) Mana: 5/10 (Tremorsense upkeep) Stamina: 11/20 (Regurgitate cost) Inventory: Old Bone, Spider Web, 3 Pebbles. Grib (Digesting - 3 hours left). Status: Surrounded, Smoky, Rat King Present. What do you do? A) COMMUNICATE WITH THE RATS You can't talk, but you can creak. Mimic the sound of a larger predator. Bluff the Rat King into thinking you're dangerous. (Cost: 0 SP. Charisma Check. Risk: They might call your bluff.) B) OFFER A TRIBUTE Regurgitate the Old Bone from your inventory. Throw it to the Rat King. A peace offering.
"I ate a goblin, here's a snack." (Cost: 1 SP. Lose Old Bone. Diplomacy Check.) C) BOLT THROUGH THE PACK Use your remaining stamina to slide fast through the gap in the rats. Risk getting bitten, but you might reach the deeper tunnels where goblins won't follow. (Cost: 5 SP. Speed Boost. Risk: High damage from bites.) D) TURN BACK AND FIGHT GOBLINS The smoke is bad, but the rats are worse. Turn around. Slam into the goblins while they're setting fires. Use the fire against them. (Cost: 3 SP. Combat. Risk: Fire damage is critical for mimics.) VOTING CLOSES IN 24 HOURS. Reply with A, B, C, or D. Most votes wins. [Author Note] Thanks for voting on Chapter 5! Option D (Regurgitate Gear) was a success! You slowed them down, but now you've run straight into the Rat King's territory.
