Recap: You're in an Inn room with Elara and Kaelen asleep. Elara left a silver coin on your lid as a test. You voted to EAT THE SILVER COIN. Greed is a sin. For a mimic, it's a compulsion. Elara had said:"Feed it coins. If it tries to bite, I'll know." I knew it was a test. I knew it. But there it sat. Glinting in the moonlight. Silver. Pure. Soft metal. My stomach gurgled. The three items already inside (Dagger, Collar, Leg) were heavy. Adding a coin wouldn't hurt. And if I left it there…
what if she opened me in the morning to see why I didn't eat it? Then she'd see my false bottom. Then she'd see my teeth. Eating it is safer, I rationalized. If the coin is gone, she'll think she lost it. Or dropped it. People lose coins. They don't expect chests to eat them. It was terrible logic. I knew it was terrible logic. But my tongue was already extending. I lifted my main lid. Just an inch. Just enough. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Skill Deactivated: Camouflage Reason: Lid Opened Risk: Detection The hinge creaked.
A microscopic sound. Creee. Elara stirred. She mumbled something in her sleep.
"… five percent cut…" I froze. Lid open. Tongue out. A sitting duck. Kaelen snored. A sound like a saw cutting through wet lumber. Elara settled back down. I swept the coin into my maw. Clink. I bit down. Silver is soft. It crumpled like foil. I swallowed. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Skill Used: Bite Cost: 2 Stamina Current SP: 19/22 I tem Acquired: Silver Coin (Undigested) Evolution Progress: 4/3 Metal (Overflow) Note: Excess metal stored for mass/density. I slammed the lid shut. Clack.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Skill Activated: Camouflage Condition: Motionless + Lid Closed Status: ACTIVE Support the author by searching for the original publication of this novel. I was back to being furniture. But now I had a belly full of scrap metal and a stolen coin. And I knew Elara would check that coin in the morning. If I stayed here, I was dead. Or enslaved. If I evolved now, the mana surge might wake them. But if I evolved, I'd be stronger. Tougher. Maybe tough enough to break out.
I had 50 minutes of evolution left to complete. The inn room was quiet. The walls were thick. Maybe the mana surge would be contained? I felt the fusion process restart. The metal items in my stomach began to vibrate. They weren't just sitting there anymore. They were bonding. My iron bands felt hot. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Evolution Resumed: Ironband Mimic Time Remaining: 50 Minutes Status: Vulnerable Ten minutes passed. The heat intensified. My wood darkened.
The rust on my bands began to flake off, revealing shiny iron underneath. Then, Elara sat up. She didn't turn on the light. She just sat there. In the dark.
"Kaelen," she whispered.
"Hmm?"
"The chest."
"What about it?"
"It's… humming again." My heart stopped. The evolution hum. It was leaking out.
"Probably the pipes," Kaelen mumbled. He rolled over.
"No," Elara said. Her voice was sharp. Awake.
"I put a silver coin on it. To test it."
"And?"
"It's gone." Silence. Heavy. Thick. I stopped moving. I stopped the evolution. I couldn't. It was in progress. Interrupting it again might lock me out permanently.
"Get your bow," Elara said.
"You think it's a mimic?"
"I think it's hungry." Footsteps. Light footsteps. She was moving toward me. I could feel her heat signature through my tremorsense. She was reaching for her daggers. I had 40 minutes left on evolution. I had 19 Stamina. I had 12 Mana. I was in a room. Third floor. Window behind me. Door in front. Elara was between me and the door. Kaelen was waking up on the other bed. I couldn't fight two Level 3 adventurers in a small room. Not yet. I needed to escape. But I was evolving. If I moved, the evolution might fail.
Wait, I thought. Evolution requires immobility. It doesn't say I can't be carried. If they picked me up to throw me out the window… I'd be safe. If they picked me up to dissect me… I'd be dead. Elara's hand touched my lid. She didn't open it. She felt the heat.
"Hot," she whispered.
"It's processing something."
"Shoot it," Kaelen said. He was up now. Bow drawn.
"No. I want it intact." She grabbed my iron bands. She lifted. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Warning: Movement During Evolution Penalty: Evolution Timer Paused Status: SUSPENDED (40 Mins Remaining) She was carrying me. Toward the window.
"Let's drop it," Elara said.
"Into the alley. If it's a mimic, it'll survive. If it's not, we lost a box." Drop me? From the third floor? I had a choice. Fight now? Or let them drop me and hope my new Defense stat saves me from the fall? Current Stats (Level 2 - Evolution Suspended): HP: 15/17 (Unchanged) Mana: 12/12 (Unchanged) Stamina: 19/22 (Unchanged) Inventory: 3 Pebbles, Rusted Iron Dagger, Warg Collar, Sentinel Leg, Silver Coin (All Undigested). B) PLAY DEAD (DROP) Stay still. Let them drop you. Rely on your Defense stat and the evolution mass to survive the fall. (Cost: 0 SP. Gain: Escape. Risk: Fall Damage (HP Loss), Noise.) C) ACTIVATE TAUNT (LOCKED) You don't have Taunt yet (Level 3). But you can make noise. Screech loudly. Scare them into dropping you.
(Cost: 0 SP. Charisma Check. Risk: Alerts Town Guard.) D) USE MANA EXPLOIT (SLAM) Use your stored mana to reinforce your weight. Become heavier suddenly. Make her drop you from the strain. Option B (Eat Coin) was risky! You ate the test coin, confirming Elara's suspicions. Now you're being carried to a window for disposal!
Evolution is paused again!
