Recap: You completed the Ironband Evolution early. A smoke entity threatened you with blue fire. You voted to ACTIVATE CAMOUFLAGE (HIDE). Running was suicide. Fighting was suicide. Hiding… well, hiding was calculated suicide. I slammed my lid shut. Clang. The sound was different now. Heavier. Metallic. The iron bands hummed against my wood. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Skill Activated: Camouflage Condition: Motionless + Lid Closed Status: ACTIVE (Ironband Enhanced) Effect: Defense +5 vs. Surprise Attacks I became a box.
Just a box. A heavy, locked, rusted box sitting in the trash. The entity didn't move away. It drifted closer. I could feel the cold radiating from it. It wasn't body heat. It was the absence of heat.
"Hiding…" the voice echoed.
"Wisdom… or… cowardice?" The blue fire coalesced in its hand. It grew brighter. Hotter. The air smelled of ozone and burnt hair. Please don't burn, I thought. Please don't burn. It threw the fire. It wasn't a stream. It was a blob. A sphere of magical combustion that engulfed my entire body.
SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Damage Detected: Magical Fire (Blue) Base Damage: 15 HP Defense Applied: -11 DR (Ironband) Resistance (Wood vs Fire): Negated (Magic Ignites) Net Damage: 4 HP Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation. Current HP: 5/17 It hurt. Oh god, it hurt. It wasn't just heat; it was wrongness. It seeped through the iron bands. It tried to find the gaps in my wood. But the Ironband evolution had sealed those gaps.
The metal acted as a heat sink, absorbing the blast rather than letting it char the wood instantly. I didn't move. I didn't creak. I didn't even vibrate. The fire faded. Smoke curled off my new iron seams. I was scorched. My HP was in the red zone. One more hit like that and I was firewood. The entity drifted back. It seemed… pleased?
"Survives… the purge," it whispered.
"Core… notes… this… anomaly." It began to fade. Dissolving into the night air.
"Return… to… dirt… Little Box. Before… the… Sun… burns… what… I… spared." And then it was gone. The vibration vanished. The pressure lifted. I was alone. Again. I waited ten minutes. Then twenty. My HP ticked up slowly. Passive regeneration. 1 HP per hour. At this rate, I'd be dead before I was full. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Time Elapsed: 30 Minutes HP Regenerated: +0 (Rounding Error) Current HP: 5/17 (Critical) Status: Scorched, Ironband Form Active Dawn was breaking.
I could feel the light changing through the cracks in my lid. The alley would be busy soon. Merchants. Guards. Elara. Elara knew I was a mimic. She knew I was in this alley. If she found me… she wouldn't drop me next time. She'd bring a hammer. Or a mage. I needed to leave. But I was at 5 HP. I couldn't fight. I couldn't run far. I needed food. Organic matter. HP regen was 5 HP per meal. One good meal and I'd be back to full. But I was in a human town. Eating people was bad (Reputation hit). Eating rats was good.
Eating trash… well, trash was safe. My tremorsense pinged. Scutter. Scutter. A rat. Big. Fat. City sewer rat. Level 1. It was sniffing around my base. Probably smelled the burnt wood. Current Stats (Level 2 - Ironband Mimic): HP: 5/17 (Critical) Mana: 8/12 (Unchanged) Stamina: 18/22 (Unchanged) Inventory: 2 Pebbles, Metal Items (Fused). Status: Scorched, Dawn Approaching, Rat Nearby. What do you do? A) EAT THE RAT (HEAL) Wait for the rat to get close. Bite. Gain 5 HP. Get back to safe health levels. (Cost: 2 SP. Gain: +5 HP. Risk: Noise might attract guards.) B) FLEE TO DUNGEON (RETURN) Ignore the rat. Slide toward the city gates. Head back to Grimfang Floor 2. Safer there. (Cost: 10 SP (Long Distance). Gain: Safety. Risk: Collapsing from exhaustion mid-travel.) C) HIDE IN SEWER (SUBTERRANEAN) Follow the rat's path. Enter the sewer system. Dark, wet, full of food. Safe from guards. (Cost: 3 SP. Gain: Cover, Food Source. Risk: Sewer Monsters.) D) WAIT FOR ELARA (AMBUSH) Stay in the alley. Let Elara find you.
You're Ironband now. Maybe you can survive her attack and escape when she opens you. (Cost: 0 SP. Gain: Surprise. Risk: She brings a Mage.) VOTING CLOSES IN 24 HOURS. Reply with A, B, C, or D. Most votes wins. [Author Note] Thanks for voting on Chapter 29! Option C (Hide) worked! Your new Defense stat saved you from the Entity's fire, but you're at Critical HP (5/17).
