Recap: Chief Grumble exposed your teeth. He ordered Grib to kill you. You decided to sacrifice your only piece of currency to create a distraction. Panic is a funny thing. In my human life, it manifested as scrolling through my phone until 3 AM instead of sleeping. Now, as a wooden box with anxiety issues, it manifests as… well, spitting copper. Kill it, Grumble had said. Grib raised his rock. It was a jagged piece of granite, roughly the size of a grapefruit. Enough to crack a walnut. Enough to dent my lid.
Enough to give me a concussion if boxes could get concussions. I didn't have time to debate the physics of box-brain trauma. I had a coin. Regurgitate, my instincts whispered. It felt like flexing a muscle I didn't know I had. A subtle contraction of the false bottom membrane. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION Skill Used: Regurgitate Cost: 1 SP Effect: Item ejected from storage. I flicked my tongue. Not the long, prehensile monster tongue hidden below the false bottom, but the muscular membrane itself acting as a catapult.
The rusty copper coin launched off the flesh-wood surface. Clink. It hit the stone floor and spun. Copper coins don't spin well. They wobble, they clatter, they die. But in the dim light of the Side Chamber, that little disk of metal caught a flicker of torchlight. It shimmered. It sang the song of greed. Grib froze. His rock hovered mid-swing. His eyes crossed. He looked at the coin. He looked at me. He looked back at the coin.
"Shiny," Grib whispered.
"Grib!" Grumble barked.
"Smash it!"
"But Chief… copper…" Grib's hand lowered. The rock dipped toward the floor. I held my breath. Or I would have, if I had lungs. Instead, I just stopped vibrating. My tremorsense was still active, humming in the back of my mind like a faulty refrigerator. I could feel the heavy thud of Grumble's boot shifting weight. I could feel the rapid, jittery tapping of Grib's bare feet. And I could feel the vibration of the coin spinning on the stone. Please, I thought. Please be stupid enough.
If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it. Grib dropped to his knees. He abandoned the murder plot entirely. He scrambled for the coin, his grubby fingers clawing at the stone.
"Idiot," Grumble growled. The hobgoblin didn't hesitate. He didn't yell again. He just stepped forward and kicked Grib in the ribs. CRACK. Grib flew sideways, hitting the wall with a wet thud. The coin skittered away into the shadows near Gerald's skeleton.
"Mine," Grumble said. He wasn't looking at the coin anymore. He was looking at me. His sword raised high.
"No distractions." Okay. Plan C failed. Plan C failed hard. Grib was out of commission (temporarily), but Grumble was still here, and he was much less interested in loose change than he was in mimic teeth. I needed to move. My base stats said I had 20 Stamina. I had used 1 to spit the coin. I had 19 left. My movement speed was 5 feet per 6 seconds. That's… slow. That's 'walking backwards through molasses' slow. Grumble's sword began to descend. I couldn't bite him from here. My range was one foot.
He was standing back to avoid exactly this. I couldn't run; he'd catch me before I cleared the doorway. But I had one advantage. He thought I was furniture. He thought I was static. He didn't know I could slide. I contracted the muscles along my base. The wooden bottom scraped against the stone floor. Scrrrrrape. It sounded like nails on a chalkboard. It was subtle. It was pathetic. It was enough to shift me six inches to the left. Grumble's sword slammed down where I had been a second ago. CLANG. Sparks flew.
The blade bit into the stone floor, embedding itself deep. Grumble's eyes widened. He tugged at the hilt. It was stuck. For a moment, there was silence. Just the sound of a hobgoblin wrestling with his own weapon and a goblin groaning against the wall. I stared at the sword. Then I stared at Grumble's exposed side. He was unarmed. He was off-balance. And he was looking at his sword, not at me. This was it. The window. The chance. But my tremorsense pinged again. A new vibration. Faint.
Coming from the corridor outside the room. Thump. Thump. Thump. Multiple footsteps. Lighter than Grumble's. Faster. Rats? Goblins? Adventurers? I didn't know. But I knew staying here while Grumble freed his sword was a bad idea. Staying here when anything else arrived was also a bad idea. I had to decide. Now. Current Stats: HP: 15/15 Mana: 9/10 (Tremorsense active) Stamina: 19/20 (1 used for Regurgitate) Inventory: Old Bone (1), Spider Web (1), Three Pebbles (3). Rusty Coin (LOST).
Status: Exposed, Hostile Audience, Sword Stuck nearby. What do you do? A) BITE THE HAND Grumble is trying to pull the sword free. His hand is on the hilt. It's within range if you lunge. Bite his fingers. Make him drop the sword completely. (Cost: 2 Stamina. Damage: 2-6. Risk: He might kick you away.) B) SLAM THE LID & PLAY DEAD Close your main lid. Close your false bottom. Hope the "False Appearance" passive re-engages once you stop moving. Maybe he'll think you broke yourself. (Cost: 1 SP to close false bottom. Requires absolute stillness.) C) SLIDE TO GERALD Use your movement to slide over to the skeleton in the corner. Hide behind the bones. Maybe the newcomer will attack the skeleton instead of you. (Cost: 5 Stamina. Takes one turn. Risk: Grumble might free his sword before you hide.) D) SCREECH (TAUNT ATTEMPT) You don't have the Taunt skill yet, but you can make noise. Creak your hinges loudly. Mimic a trap triggering. Scare them into fleeing. (Cost: 0 SP. Charisma Check. Risk: Might just annoy them more.) VOTING CLOSES IN 24 HOURS. Reply with A, B, C, or D. Most votes wins.
