"Bam! Bam!" Kyle's ears twitched. He quickly headed towards the source of the noise, just in time to see four goblins trying to break into a house. Kyle judged that someone must be holding off the door from the other side; hence, the goblins couldn't break it despite their efforts. However, it was already teetering.
"Gah!" The faint sobbing from inside the houses excited the goblins even further. They laughed maniacally as they struck the door with their clubs. Kyle's expression turned cold. He instantly crossed the distance between them, appearing next to the goblins in just a second.
"Gah?" The goblins cried in confusion as they felt the unusual airflow behind them, but before they could turn around, a few silver flashes glinted in the corner of their vision. In the next second, they felt that the door before them suddenly shot upward, towering over them. In their last conscious moments, they caught a glimpse of a few familiar bodies, headless, blood oozing from their necks, before falling into darkness.
Kyle flicked the blood off his blade and glanced at the teetering door before rushing towards the next place.
'This is the worst-case scenario.' His brows furrowed.
'Not to mention that this happened in the most densely populated southern district.' He could see houses burning in the distance, with people running out from them only to stumble into goblins waiting outside. Further away were civilians trapped under the rubble, with adventurers trying to free them. Unfortunately, most couldn't survive long enough to be rescued. The casualties were extremely high.
However, what truly made Kyle's blood boil was the thugs taking advantage of this disaster to break into houses and rob people.
'Fucking scum!' Kyle's eyebrows twitched. Mirevale was the largest settlement in the Duskwood Barony and its core territory. The Barony had over 80, 000 inhabitants, and Mirevale housed almost half of them. Most of them lived in the southern district, the most densely populated place in the town. It was also the most chaotic area. Home to not only to low-caste commoners but also to beggars, criminals, and gang members.
In addition to that, due to the goblin attacks on various villages, many villagers were temporarily relocated into the town, and they were placed precisely into the southern district, making it even more densely populated. Thus, an attack on the southern district was definitely the most effective means to harvest lives.
'I can't waste a second!' Kyle tightened his grip on his sword as he rushed through the narrow streets, killing any goblin he passed by. Passing by a thug trying to break into a house, Kyle didn't hesitate to break his legs.
"Ah!" The thug fell onto the ground, howling in agony, but Kyle didn't pay him any mind, moving on to the next place. This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there. After killing a few more goblins, Kyle finally reached one of the underground holes. Quite a few adventurers were already standing next to it, killing the goblins rushing out from it. Kyle quickly spotted Rowan and Barrett.
They were cooperating to deal with a human-sized goblin wearing leather armor and holding a sword. A rank 1 goblin warrior. Barrett struck the goblin warrior with his shield, driving him back and allowing Rowan to stab him in his unarmored stomach.
"Roar!" The goblin warrior roared in anger and pain, trying to swing his sword at Rowan only to be blocked by Barrett again. The two alternated, taking less than a minute to push the goblin warrior to his death. Kyle noted their teamwork before rushing towards them, killing the goblins that jumped off the top of a pile of rubble, trying to ambush them.
"Kyle! You're here!" Barrett exclaimed. Kyle nodded before asking, "How's the situation on your side?" Rowan replied with a frown on his face.
"Worse than expected. The number of goblins isn't decreasing no matter how many we kill." Kyle nodded, shifting his sight to the other adventurers moving around. He watched an iron-class adventurer struggle against three goblins in the distance. He parried a thrust from a goblin and kicked it away, only to be stabbed in the leg by a sneak attack from another goblin. It wasn't until a companion of his rushed to help that they got rid of the three goblins.
Not all adventurers were as strong as him, killing goblins easily even back when he was just an apprentice swordsman. Most iron-grade adventurers struggled to deal with three or more goblins at the same time. Kyle frowned and shifted his gaze back to the hole on the ground. He was powerless to help everyone. He could only focus on what he could do.
"We need to kill as many rank 1 goblins as possible while killing the goblins rushing out of this underground entrance. The other copper-class teams have rushed to other holes." Rowan said as he killed the goblins rushing out from the underground entrance. Looking at the goblins that had already scattered into the town, Rowan continued.
"As for the goblins that have already rushed out, leave them to the iron-grade adventurers." Kyle nodded in agreement. That was already the best arrangement so far.
"Where's Silas?" He looked around, trying to find that elusive figure.
"I'm here." A cold voice sounded from the side, causing Kyle to break into a cold sweat. He quickly turned around, just in time to see a hooded figure slowly emerging from an alleyway's shadow. The dagger in his hand was still dripping blood. Not far behind him lay a hooded figure on the ground. It was a goblin, leaner and taller than average, but its presence was extremely thin. A goblin assassin. A dangerous rank 1 monster. However, it lay on the ground, its throat slit, dead. Kyle's pupils shrank.
He didn't notice Silas at all, even though his sight had just swept past that alley.
'I need to upgrade my [Clairvoyant Eye]; it needs to see through shadows, disguise, and camouflage at least.' Kyle thought, a trace of caution flashing in his eyes as he looked at the hooded figure. Although they were teammates now, no one knew what might happen in the future. Not to mention that he would definitely have to fight with assassins and rogues in the future. Therefore, a way to see past their camouflage was necessary. Silas nodded at them before disappearing back into the shadows.
Kyle and the other two looked at each other. They nodded before quickly surrounding the underground hole. It had a diameter of less than 3 meters, with goblins rushing out of it almost every few seconds. The three of them focused on dealing with all emerging goblins, not allowing a single one to pass. When the occasional rank 1 monster rushed out, the three of them teamed up to kill it in the shortest possible time.
During their battles with the rank 1 monsters, a few goblins would quickly rush out past their encirclement. However, a shadowy figure would instantly emerge and deal with the escaping goblins before hiding back in the shadows. At some unknown point in time, the sun rays slowly disappeared as a large shadow enveloped them.
"Rumble!" The rumbling of thunder suddenly sounded, catching their attention. Kyle quickly turned his head. The rumbling of thunder came from outside the town. The battle had broken out in the afternoon. The excessive summer heat caused the corpses of both humans and goblins to quickly stink. Even now, the stench of blood and corpses still stung his nostrils, though he had learned to ignore it; Kyle still didn't like it.
But now the sun was obscured by a massive cloud that came from nowhere, enveloping half of Mirevale and extending into the prairie outside. The wind picked up, driving the stench away.
"What is that?" Barrett looked shocked as he looked at the flashes of lightning filling the dark cloud.
"It's a spell. An extremely high-level spell," Rowan replied, his expression solemn.
'Is it you? Miss Selene?' Kyle thought, looking at the massive cloud obscuring the sky. The clouds parted, revealing a massive sphere of plasma. The sphere hovered hundreds of meters above the ground; flashes of lightning occasionally erupted from it. The town fell silent as both humans and goblins looked at the massive sphere with awe. After a tense few seconds, the massive sphere fell.
