Looking back at the president's office door, Kyle's eyes held unusual brilliance. He had a hunch that the goblin disaster wouldn't end so easily. The Old Imperial Cult had so many arrangements; they shouldn't just watch as President Richard ruined their plans. Kyle pondered for a while before shaking his head. This wasn't something he should be worrying about.
"10 gold coins. Miss Selene is so generous." He checked the money pouch Selene gave him and was thrilled by the amount. His net worth had climbed to over 20 gold coins again. Kyle happily walked down to the second floor and sat at an empty table before ordering a drink and some snacks. Taking a sip of the juice in his hand, Kyle mulled over what to do next.
'I shouldn't accept quests until the goblin disaster is solved.' He felt that if everything went well, the goblin disaster should be curbed within the next few days with the death of the goblin boss. Things had always gone wrong when he accepted goblin-related missions.
'Maybe I should shift to other quests. The issue is that there's nothing but goblin-related quests in the guild at the moment.' Kyle tapped the wooden table with his finger, his brows furrowed. After thinking for a moment, Kyle shook his head. He felt that he was fussing over nothing. Quests about other monsters would surely emerge after the goblin disaster was curbed.
"Vrooom!!!" The sound of a horn suddenly resounded through the town, snapping Kyle out of his reverie.
"What was that?" He raised his head and looked around. The surrounding adventurers looked puzzled and panicked as well. Soon after, a native adventurer shouted, realizing the significance of the horn.
"It's the warning horn! Mirevale is under attack!" The scene fell silent for a second before the adventurers exploded.
"What?!"
"Who's attacking? What should we do?"
"It's probably the goblins! They have launched multiple attacks on Mirevale before!" Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.
"Yeah, but no horn was blown at the time!" The adventurers' guild fell into chaos. Adventurers either ran to the first floor to check the situation or gathered in small groups to talk and speculate about the reason why the horn was blown. Soon after, someone posed a critical question.
"So, what does the horn signal exactly? What should we do?"
"I'll answer that question." A middle-aged adventurer with a copper tag hanging on his neck said. He clapped his hands, gathering everyone's attention.
"The disaster horn is blown when the town is faced with the possibility of being destroyed. It's not only a signal for the guards to gather at the town's walls but also a warning for civilians to hide in their houses. As for us…" The middle-aged adventurer paused for a second.
"We are required to wait for further instruction at the guild. If the situation deteriorates, we are required by law to assist the guards in defending the walls." The middle-aged adventurer concluded with a serious expression on his face. After a moment of silence, the shouting had gotten even worse. A bunch of obscenities were thrown around, and the adventurers looked agitated, looking like they were about to snap.
"The hell I am!"
"Why should I risk my life to defend this town? I'm not even from here!" The shouting only got worse. Several experienced adventurers tried to calm them down, but they didn't listen. Kyle watched on with furrowed brows. He could hear a lot of noise from downstairs. The adventurers on the first floor should have fallen into even greater chaos. They didn't have the power of the professionals on the second floor. Most were trained ordinary people; only a few were apprentices.
If they were placed in a battlefield, they were very likely to become cannon fodder.
"We don't even know who the enemy is yet, and you're panicking so much! You cowards!" A young adventurer shouted, pouring fuel on the fire.
"What did you say, punk? I'll fucking smash your face!" A burly adventurer confronted the young man, their faces red with anger, just a few centimeters away from each other. They were just a spark away from a brawl.
"Silence!" A clear yet majestic voice sounded through the guild, suppressing everyone else's, followed by a huge pressure that froze everyone in their place. Footsteps sounded from the stairs to the third floor, followed by the appearance of a beautiful woman walking into the second-floor hall. It was Vice President Selene. Her blue eyes sternly swept through the chaotic adventurers. Her brows furrowed at the mess they created, but she didn't chastise anyone.
She raised her staff and chanted under her breath; a few seconds later, a transparent energy wave gently drifted around the adventurers, soothing their spirits and calming their minds.
"Please calm down and wait for further instruction. Don't worry, the guild won't push you into danger." Selene said before walking towards the staff area on the side. The adventurers looked at each other and then sat in their seats. Although many still had worried expressions, they no longer exuded that sense of mania.
'Miss Selene is amazing.' Kyle leaned against the wall; his table had been flipped during the chaos. He looked out of the window, watching as civilians rushed into their homes and bolted their doors.
'The cult is indeed no pushover.' Kyle didn't believe for a second that the cult had no hand in getting the goblins to attack the town without being discovered.
'It seems that I have no choice but to participate in this battle.' Kyle's eyes sharpened. But he couldn't stop his lips from curling into a grin. A spark of excitement ran through him at the thought of the battle he was about to face. He had inadvertently grown to love fighting.
