The afternoon sun shone on Mirevale's walls. The sweltering heat caused sweat to flow down Varn's neck to his torso. The thick clothes, the chainmail, and the armor he wore didn't make it easier. However, he didn't have the time to worry about that. The green tide approaching from the horizon was more attention-worthy.
"What a joke…" Varn muttered. He was the commander of the guards. It wasn't as if he hadn't seen and killed goblins in the past. He had dealt with much scarier monsters, so he didn't usually take those green runts seriously. However, the sight of thousands of goblins rushing from underground holes was disturbing. He had never thought that he would feel such pressure from the weak green runts he despised so much.
"Is the Greenfire Knight order here yet?" Varn lowered his binoculars and asked his deputy. His deputy, a middle-aged dark-haired man, checked his notes.
"Not yet, but they should arrive soon. The 3rd battalion of the Silver Chevron under Lord Matthias is approaching as well." The deputy added. Varn nodded, his eyes briefly scanning the guards on the walls, satisfied that they were in their positions, before shifting back to the goblin horde.
"To think that so many goblins are still alive next to the town. Those adventurer bastards are useless." Varn clicked his tongue.
"Speaking of adventurers, the guild said that they were ready to provide support at any time." The deputy said, his expression wooden. He was a serious and dutiful man. Although it wasn't his position to advise his superior, he didn't like insulting or gossiping about people behind their backs.
"Tch! If we let those rabble in, they would just disturb the order and interfere with our arrangements." Varn sneered, leaning over the wall and watching the goblins approach.
"If they did their job well, there wouldn't be so many goblins attacking the town." Varn leaned back. He picked up his spear and walked to the other side of the wall, watching the approaching Knight Order.
"Then again, I'm not the one in charge. Once the knight commander arrives, he will decide whether to employ those adventurers or not." Varn was certain that he would. Commander Kaelen Voss was a pragmatic man. He wouldn't hesitate to use all forces under his command to achieve his objectives. ….. Inside the adventurers' guild, the second floor. Kyle was leaning against the wall, looking at the empty street through the window. He had been waiting for a while now.
The adventurers on the second floor had calmed down a long time ago. They were either sitting on chairs, examining their weapons and supplies, or buying potions and other necessary materials from the counters. Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author's consent. Report any sightings. Even the noise from the first floor had quieted down. Kyle had bought three health restoration potions for 90 silver coins and two mana restoration potions for 1 gold.
Adding them to the potions he had bought in the past, he wouldn't have to worry about surface injuries. Now, all he had to do was wait for the guild's deployment. They weren't allowed to carelessly walk outside or approach the wall under martial lockdown at all.
'I guess that's because Mirevale doesn't have any noteworthy or famous adventurers, not even a single rank 2. The famous adventurer parties in Velkaris or other big cities are granted great privileges and autonomy.' He thought as he looked at the whispering adventurers.
'Another reason should be that there isn't a single silver-rank adventurer here. None of us has the qualification to negotiate with the guild.' Kyle shook his head and looked out of the window. Minutes later, orders finally came down from the guild. They were ordered to head to the town's walls and wait for further command. Kyle walked on the street with a crowd of adventurers. He could feel eyes on them from behind the shuttered windows of the surrounding houses.
Shifting his gaze to the adventurers near him, he noticed that many had disgruntled expressions. Some looked fearful and angry, and some looked excited. However, the majority weren't happy, especially the iron-grade adventurers. Many looked like they were walking to their own execution, their faces filled with fear and despair. Kyle looked away. This was the responsibility of adventurers.
Although they no longer had to comply with the lord's conscription order to fight for territory or even other kingdoms, they had the responsibility to deal with monsters threatening human territory. It didn't take them long to reach the town's walls.
"Adventurers!" Just as they looked around in confusion, a shout from the top of the walls caught their attention. The adventurers, including Kyle, looked up. A dashing silver-haired man wearing armor caught their attention. He looked down at them, arms crossed, his expression stern. Standing next to him was the commander of the guards, Varn, an old man wearing light armor, and the son of the Viscount, Matthias.
"Mages and archers, get up here! As for the rest, split into teams of four according to your grade and wait for orders." The man didn't mince words, getting straight to the point. The adventurers looked at each other but, under the urging of the soldiers, quickly followed orders. Most parties immediately gathered into teams, followed by people familiar with each other. Kyle looked around, a bit at a loss. His loner personality came back to bite him.
He saw a few familiar faces, including Marcus and Ron, but they were already in a team, and besides, they were iron-class adventurers. He couldn't team up with them. Within minutes, only a few people without teams remained. Kyle found himself teaming up with two familiar people. The dark-haired warrior whose girlfriend was snatched by Matthias, Rowan, and his burly shieldbearer companion.
The last one was a young brown-haired rogue with slightly darker skin, but he seemed even more of a loner than Kyle, standing a few meters away from them, his expression cold. The three of them awkwardly looked at each other before the dark-haired warrior coughed and broke the silence.
"Ahem! I'm Rowan, a rank 1 warrior." Rowan's gaze shifted between Kyle and the rogue as he introduced himself.
"I'm Kyle, a rank 1 swordsman." Kyle shook Rowan's hand, introducing himself with a calm expression. The burly man extended his hand as well.
"Hi! I'm Barrett, a rank 1 shieldbearer." Kyle shook his hand. He noticed a faint bruise on his right cheek. He noted that he wasn't in a good mood as well. In fact, both he and Rowan seemed in a very bad mood. They were trying to hide it, though. Kyle could understand. After all, less than 2 hours ago, their companion/girlfriend betrayed them, and they were beaten. Not to mention that they had been forcibly conscripted to fight monsters right after. Anyone in their position would be in a terrible mood.
After the three introduced themselves, they shifted their sight to the rogue.
"Silas, rank 1 rogue," Silas said coolly, shifting his hat slightly. Kyle noticed that his ears were slightly pointed.
'Elven bloodline?' Kyle muttered inwardly, his expression thoughtful. He didn't have the time to think further, though, as the battle seemed to start.
"Archers, attack!" The silver-haired man, Commander Kaelen, shouted.
