"Archers, attack!" Commander Kaelen shouted. In the next moment, hundreds of arrows rained from the wall into the goblin horde.
"Gah!"
"Ahh!"
"Wah gah!!" Hundreds of goblins were injured, with dozens dying on the spot, but more quickly filled their place, stepping over the corpses of their kin and rushing towards the walls. Their faces were filled with greed and frenzy, drool dripping from their dirty mouths as they howled and rushed towards the wall. Kaelen looked down from the wall, his expression frosty. He watched as the number of goblins rushing out from the various holes in the ground grew to over 10, 000.
They quickly narrowed the distance between them and the wall, soon closing to within 200 meters of the town. The guards on the wall and even some of his knights looked nervous as they watched the never-ending horde of goblins, but Kaelen didn't even frown. He knew that no matter how many of those runts rushed towards them, they would only be heading towards their death.
Mirevale's walls might not be impressive compared to the towering walls of larger cities, but they were still over 6 meters tall and 2 meters thick, made of hard stones and reinforced with earth magic. Those runts could strike it for all their lives, but they wouldn't be able to damage it. The only way to breach it was for them to pile up enough corpses to jump over the walls, or…
"Have the mutants attack it." Kaelen's eyes narrowed. His eyesight was so sharp that he didn't need binoculars to see the goblins rushing from the holes hundreds of meters away. He could clearly see as an unusually large goblin, over two meters tall and with hulking muscles, climbed out of the underground hole.
Soon after, several more giant goblins of similar size and even bigger crawled out from underground, followed by human-sized goblin warriors wearing armor and holding pristine weapons, and smaller yet more agile goblin assassins that soon disappeared in the horde. Finally, several goblins wearing long robes and holding staffs crawled out of the ground. The goblin shamans. Kaelen's gaze swept over the goblin mutants.
'Almost a hundred?' His brows furrowed. Their number was a bit unexpected, but it wasn't something to be anxious about.
'The goblin lord hasn't appeared. Was he dealt with by Richard's assault team or…' Kaelen was fully aware of President Richard's assault on the goblin base, but it seemed that something had gone very wrong.
'A diversion? Was the so-called goblin camp just a diversion? Are goblins so smart?' Kaelen was puzzled. In the end, he just shook his head, attributing the goblins' movements to the cult. He didn't believe that those green runts could outsmart Mirevale's best minds. Watching the goblin horde quickly approach the walls, Kaelen raised his hands, signaling for the second wave of arrows to be released. Royal Road is the home of this novel. "Gah!" The goblins screeched in agony as they were struck by the arrows, but more soon trampled over the fallen and approached, quickly reaching the base of the walls.
"Release the tar!" Kaelen said. The guards across the walls picked up large buckets of a dark, viscous substance and dumped it over the walls. The sticky substance flowed along the walls and onto the goblins that were clawing on the hard stone, trying to climb up. A few moments later, several guards standing dozens of meters apart lit a match and threw it into the tar below.
The instant the match collided with the tar, it combusted into a massive flame, quickly spreading across the base of the walls, turning the large number of goblins into living torches.
"Gaaahhh!" The goblins howled in agony, rolling on the ground, trying to extinguish the flames sticking on them, but that only served to spread the flames further, igniting even more goblins. It was a scene akin to hell, with dark figures writhing in agony in blazing flames. The scent of tar and burning flesh quickly spread, causing the faces of many guards to turn pale. Many dry-heaved, and some even vomited, spreading the disgusting smell even further. Kaelen's expression didn't change.
He just watched the goblins writhing in agony as they were turned into scorched bones. He shifted his gaze to the rank 1 mutants in the distance. They were slowly approaching, but they didn't seem intent on acting yet. However, what worried him even more was the fact that goblins didn't stop pouring out from the underground holes. Their number had climbed to over 15, 000.
"Tch, if adventurers did their job, there wouldn't be so many goblins." Varn, the commander of the guards, clicked his tongue and said. He was also deeply disturbed by the number of goblins pouring out. Kaelen glanced at him but didn't respond. However, Matthias did.
"Well, what can you expect from these poor wretches? They're not only useless, they completely destabilize the peace of human territories. I'm deeply puzzled why we allow these commoners to even access extraordinary power." Matthias added from the side, his face filled with disdain for adventurers.
"That's a reckless thing to say, young man. The significance of adventurers is beyond your imagination." A cool voice sounded not far away. Kaelen and the others turned their heads to look not far away, only to see a beautiful woman dressed in an ornate violet robe and holding a long staff, crowned with a sparkling blue gem, flying towards them. She gently landed on top of the walls and walked towards Kaelen with a serene expression on her face.
"If the adventurers guild didn't act, the goblin disaster would have broken out much earlier, and the number of goblins would be much higher than this." She said with a faint smile on her face. Matthias didn't pay attention to the topic anymore. His eyes glowed a strange light as he looked at the beautiful guild vice president. His gaze lingered on her a moment too long before he smoothed his collar and walked toward her.
"I'm Matthias Haldren. Heir to the Silvernight Viscounty. May I have the pleasure of getting to know you, beautiful lady?" Matthias bowed slightly before extending his palm, intending to kiss Selene's hand. Selene looked at the young man trying to court her with an amused expression. She chuckled and walked past him. Matthias's expression stiffened for a moment before naturally pulling his hand back and straightening up, still smiling.
"Young master, she's the famous Purple Disaster. The disciple of the legendary magic calamity, the dean of the Violet Magic Academy. Please don't offend her." The old man standing behind Matthias whispered to him. Matthias clenched his fist, but he quickly composed himself. Forcing himself to maintain his aristocratic manners. Kaelen took all of this in, but he didn't care. He glanced at the approaching Selene before shifting his gaze to the battlefield.
"Any news from Richard yet?" Kaelen asked with a calm expression, his arms crossed.
"Not yet. I've tried contacting him several times, but he didn't respond. Something is interfering with our communication signals." Selene shook her head, her gaze landing on the burning goblins below.
"I see." Kaelen had a thoughtful expression on his face. He felt that it was more and more likely that the goblin base was a trap. The flame at the base of the walls slowly extinguished, taking the lives of hundreds of goblins and injuring even more, but compared to the thousands still rushing towards them, it was just a small part. However, there was a more pressing matter, and that was that the rank 1 goblins had started to move.
"Rank 1 archers and mages, prepare!" Kaelen bellowed. Over a dozen archers holding exquisite bows stepped up. Only three were adventurers; the rest were members of the two knight orders. Following them were a pitiful seven mages. All were adventurers. Three were rank-1 mages, and the remaining four were apprentices. Kaelen raised his hand to signal them to be ready, and when the rank-1 goblins reached the optimal position, he swung his hand forward.
"Attack!"
