DATE: Thursday, January 17, 1984 LOCATION: La Jolla, California | The Sand Castle, The Archive LOCAL TIME: 09: 00 PM The subterranean air smelled of ozone and melting rosin core solder. Steve Wozniak sat cross-legged on a grounded antistatic mat, a jeweler's loupe wedged into his eye as he inspected the solder joints on a freshly burned PAL chip. He didn't look up as the heavy steel door hissed open, admitting Bob and me into the lab.
"I heard you went to Bandley 3," Wozniak said, his voice unusually flat. He set the soldering iron in its safety cradle and wiped the tip on a damp sponge.
"My friends in Cupertino said you had a private tour with Steve." Bob pulled up a metal stool and sat down across from him, while I leaned against the workbench.
"We did," Bob said.
"We watched the commercial for the Macintosh. It's going to make a lot of noise next week." If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. Wozniak took the loupe out of his eye. His expression was heavy with disappointment.
"I thought we had an understanding. You told me Steve wanted to build a beautiful prison. So why are you helping him sell it?"
"We didn't help him sell it, Woz," I said, picking up a stray resistor from the antistatic mat and rolling it between my fingers.
"I just told him to swing the hammer as hard as he can." Wozniak shook his head, looking down at the logic board in his lap.
"He stripped my name off the architecture. Turned the Apple II into a sealed box nobody can modify. He's erasing everything I believe in." His voice thickened.
"He was my friend." I stayed quiet for a moment, then spoke softly.
"Steve's good at making people want something new. He's using a friendly, sealed interface to get a computer onto everyone's desk. But once the public is used to the mouse and the screen, the hardware becomes a commodity. That's when we slip the real architecture underneath his walled garden—fractal shares and a decentralized ledger that no one person can lock down." Wozniak was silent for a long beat. He picked up the board by its edges, staring at the intricate web of traces.
"You still don't understand what we're actually building here, do you?" he said quietly.
"Project Sutra… the digital twin running on the Sovereign Ledger… what we're doing makes peripherals obsolete. Keyboards, mice, monitors—all of it. None of that matters once this is ready." He let out a slow, tired breath.
"And there you were, watching Steve scream about beige colors, while we're building something that's going to make his entire machine irrelevant. It's… strange."
