DATE: Tuesday, February 10, 1981 LOCATION: Scotts Valley, California | Hospital Room 402 LOCAL TIME: 02: 00 PM PST Steve Wozniak stared blankly at the acoustic ceiling tiles. Three days ago, he had crashed his Beechcraft Bonanza. The trauma left him with anterograde amnesia—he couldn't form new memories that lasted longer than a few hours. To the doctors, it was a tragedy. To me, it was a perfect window. Uncle Bob stood guard outside. I walked up to the side of the bed in the cable-knit sweater Nana had made me.
Wozniak looked down, offering a gentle, confused smile.
"Hey there. Are you lost?"
"No, Steve," I said, not bothering to hide the grown man behind the child's voice.
"I'm exactly where I need to be." If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. His brow furrowed at the mismatch in cadence.
"You're going to forget this conversation in about twenty minutes," I continued calmly.
"But the feeling will remain. When Bob Yauney comes to offer you a job next week, I need your gut to tell you to say yes." Wozniak rubbed his temple.
"A job? I work at Apple. Steve and I… we're building the Mac."
"Jobs wants to build a beautiful closed prison," I said.
"Soldered cases. Total control. You and I both know that goes against everything you believe in." Wozniak went very still. I leaned closer.
"I'm not offering money or fame. I'm offering an open architecture. No corporate master. Unlimited R&D. No one telling you what color the plastic should be. Just pure engineering. I need you to build the silicon." His eyes slowly lit up with something close to awe.
"An open architecture… no limits?" he whispered.
"None," I promised. Wozniak smiled, resting his head back against the pillow.
"Okay… Okay. I'll build it." I patted his hand. Ten minutes later, he had already forgotten my name. But when Bob offered him the job a week later, Wozniak signed without hesitation. Deep down, some part of him knew it was exactly where he belonged. You don't recruit generational geniuses with stock options. You find the specific bottleneck that keeps them awake at night… and hand them a sledgehammer.
