DATE: Tuesday, September 16, 1980 LOCATION: Vista, California LOCAL TIME: 10: 00 AM PST Bill Gates had the frantic energy of a man who hadn't slept in a week. The twenty-four-year-old kept pushing his oversized glasses up his nose, a sheen of sweat catching the fluorescent light. Across the desk, Uncle Bob Yauney sat completely relaxed, his hands folded in his lap.
"I need that Q-DOS code, Bob," Gates said, his voice tight.
"IBM was in my office again yesterday. They want an operating system, and they want it now. If I don't deliver, they're going back to Gary Kildall." Bob didn't blink.
"We're not licensing it to you, Bill." Gates leaned forward, incredulous.
"Then you're crazy. You're a software guy—you know what this contract is worth. IBM will eat you alive if you try to deal with them directly." The door to the adjoining office clicked open. John Patterson stepped in, immaculate in a dark, tailored suit.
"That's exactly why," Patterson said smoothly, "you're going to be the one who deals with them." This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work. He dropped a thick, bound contract onto the desk. The thud seemed to suck the air out of the room. Bob leaned forward, his relaxed demeanor vanishing.
"We bought the Seattle code in July. We own Q-DOS. You are completely out of options." Gates stared at the heavy stack of paper, then back up at the two men. The color began to drain from his face as the reality of the trap set in. Patterson continued, his voice cold and precise.
"We're acquiring Microsoft. Two million dollars in immediate capital. You retain the title of CEO and full creative control. But every dime of operating system royalties flows back to the parent company." Gates swallowed hard.
"You're asking me to sell my company."
"We're offering you a lifeline," Bob said quietly.
"Sign it, and you'll be the man who puts an operating system on every IBM PC in the world. Walk away, and Kildall gets the crown." Gates stared at the papers for a long time. His hands were visibly shaking as he reached into his jacket pocket. He pulled out a pen, clicked it once, and pressed it to the signature line. The scratch of the pen across the paper was the only noise left in the room. When Gates finally set the pen down, he looked smaller somehow. Like something vital had just been taken from him.
Bob leaned back in his chair, his voice calm and almost gentle.
"Congratulations, Bill. You're now the public face of the most important software company in the world." Patterson quietly gathered the signed contract and slipped it into a leather folder. Gates just stared at the empty space on the desk where his future had been. His voice was barely a whisper.
"…I just sold Microsoft, didn't I?" Bob didn't answer. He didn't need to. The trap had closed.
