DATE: Sunday, September 25, 1983 LOCATION: La Jolla, California LOCAL TIME: 01: 05 PM PDT Evelyn had signed off twenty minutes ago. The photographs were gone—bought, sealed, and delivered into Vanessa Williams's own hands. I stood beside Bucky at the library window, staring down at the beach. My mother sat on a blanket with Anne Fuller, watching my little brothers play in the surf. It should have felt like victory. Instead, my stomach was in knots.
"I'm worried, Bucky." He leaned on his cane.
"About the girl?"
"No." I shook my head.
"About the noise I'm making." The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement. Bucky turned to look at me.
"I'm changing too many variables, too fast," I said quietly.
"Every move I make creates ripples. I keep thinking… what if I've already changed something important without realizing it?" I lifted my small hand and pointed at the digital clock on the wall.
"Right now, in a bunker outside Moscow, a man named Stanislav Petrov is staring at a computer screen. The system is telling him that five American nuclear missiles have been launched. According to protocol, he's supposed to report it. If he does, the world ends in thirty minutes." Bucky went very still.
"I couldn't warn him," I said, my voice tight.
"But what if one of my changes already reached that bunker? What if the one man who's supposed to be sitting there today… isn't there anymore?" The minutes crawled by in silence. 1: 10 PM. 1: 20 PM. 1: 30 PM. The sky outside remained blue. Nothing happened. Bucky exhaled slowly. A wave of relief hit me so hard my legs felt weak.
"He did it," I whispered.
"Petrov looked at the data, saw it didn't make sense, and said no. He saved the world with one decision." I looked up at Bucky, my voice barely audible.
"He did more with a single 'no' than I've done with all my money." Bucky placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Tensegrity, Chad," he said softly.
"You cannot control every node. Sometimes you have to trust the material."
