The transition from the freezing, physical reality of the Argus Limited into the ethereal subconscious was not a gentle fading of light. It was a violent, rushing slipstream of sound and color that dragged Weiss, Blake, Pyrrha, Ren, and Nora through the veil of the waking world, dropping them directly into a nightmare. They opened their eyes, their boots hitting a cold, unyielding surface. The environment around them was breathtakingly tragic. They were standing in the center of a colossal, shattered clocktower.
A twisted, fragmented memory of Beacon Academy. There were no walls, only the massive, broken face of the clock stretching out as a black-and-white checkered glass floor. Beyond the edge of the glass was an endless, suffocating void of bruised violet clouds and swirling ash. From the dark heavens above, massive, golden clockwork gears rained down like heavy, metallic tears, crashing into the invisible boundaries of the void with deafening, echoing tolls.
The air itself was impossibly heavy, dripping with a sorrow so ancient and profound that it made the students' lungs burn just trying to breathe.
"Over there!" Blake yelled, drawing Gambol Shroud as her amber eyes pierced through the swirling ash. In the direct center of the shattered clock face, curled into a tight, trembling ball, was Oscar Pine. The young farm boy was sweating profusely, his eyes squeezed shut in absolute, paralyzing terror as he actively endured the nightmare. Standing protectively over him was Ozpin. However, the Headmaster was not a physical being here. He manifested as a translucent, spectral guardian.
His ethereal form was weary, his shoulders hunched under an invisible, crushing weight. He had his cane planted firmly into the glass floor, projecting a massive, glowing emerald Aura dome over himself and the boy. Pressing relentlessly against the glass of the dome was the Nightmare Grimm. That creature was a horrific, colossal amalgamation of shifting shadows and thick, pulsing red vines covered in razor-sharp thorns. It did not have a face, only a writhing mass of hatred and hunger.
It was feeding greedily on Ozpin's ambient guilt. The heavy, suffocating sorrow of centuries of failed leadership, fallen kingdoms, and dead students. With every strike of its massive, thorny tentacles, the emerald dome flickered, and Ozpin's spectral form shuddered in agony.
"It's trying to crush them!" Ren shouted, drawing StormFlower, the blades extending with a sharp metallic schwing.
"We have to relieve the pressure on the shield!"
"Leave the big ones to me!" Nora roared. She didn't hesitate. Channeling the static electricity from her own Aura, brilliant pink lightning arced across her body. She sprinted forward, her boots cracking the glass floor. She moved with a raw, explosive kinetic force honed by months of enduring Saitama's god-like physical conditioning regimens. A massive, trunk-sized vine whipped down from the dark clouds, aiming to shatter Ozpin's dome. Nora vaulted into the air, spinning Magnhild in a lethal, 360-degree arc.
"HYAAH!" The supercharged hammer collided with the vine. The impact triggered a localized, thunderous shockwave that completely vaporized the appendage into black ash, forcing that monster to recoil with a voiceless shriek.
"Ren! With me!" Blake commanded. The two stealth specialists blurred into motion. Moving at speeds that defied standard Huntsman limits, they became mere afterimages darting across the checkered glass. The Nightmare Grimm responded by unleashing a swarm of smaller, creeping roots along the floor to entangle their legs. Blake used Gambol Shroud's ribbon to slingshot herself around the perimeter, her blade a flurry of black steel.
She severed a dozen roots in a single, fluid spinning strike, leaving behind a fading shadow-clone to absorb a retaliatory lash. Ren slid beneath a sweeping tentacle, his breathing steady and perfectly controlled. He moved with sub-atomic precision, firing concentrated bursts of Aura-infused bullets from StormFlower that severed the creeping vines before they could even reach the emerald barrier.
"I have the sky!" Weiss declared, her pale blue eyes cool and calculating. She glided gracefully to the edge of the clock face, Myrtenaster glowing brightly in her hand. High above, three colossal golden gears, each the size of a Manta dropship, were plummeting directly toward the center of the arena, manipulated by the Nightmare's shifting shadows to crush the barrier. Weiss thrust her rapier upward. Three massive, black gravity glyphs flared into existence directly in the path of the falling gears.
The gravitational pull caught the metallic behemoths, stopping them completely mid-air. With a fierce, tactical shout, Weiss spun Myrtenaster, inverting the polarity of the glyphs. She weaponized the environment, launching the massive golden gears horizontally like meteors directly into the central mass of the Nightmare Grimm. The tremendous impact shattered a massive chunk of the beast's outer vines, sending that monster reeling backward into the void.
For a brief, triumphant moment, the pressure on the dome vanished. But the Nightmare was ancient. It was cunning. Realizing that physical force could not overcome the students' drastically improved martial prowess, that creature adapted. It stopped lashing out physically and tapped entirely into the emotional food source it had latched onto: Ozpin's bottomless well of guilt. The shadows writhing around the monster's core began to morph. The air grew impossibly cold.
The swirling ash coalesced, forming hundreds of faceless phantoms. They wore the armor of ancient Huntsmen, the cloaks of forgotten Huntresses, and the uniforms of Beacon students. You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story. They surrounded the emerald dome, their hollow voices whispering overlapping, maddening accusations into the icy wind. You failed us... You led us to the slaughter... How many more have to die for your mistakes? Inside the dome, Ozpin fell to his knees.
He dropped his spectral cane, clutching his head as the agonizing whispers tore through his soul. The emerald barrier began to spider-web with deep, jagged cracks.
"Professor!" Oscar screamed, clutching his head as Ozpin's overwhelming despair began to bleed into his own mind, tearing the dreamscape apart. Then, the Nightmare played its ultimate trump card. Directly in front of the cracking emerald dome, the shadows fused together, taking on a form that made the students freeze in their tracks. It was a phantom of Pyrrha Nikos. She stood in her bronze and red armor, her green eyes completely hollow and dead.
Protruding from her chest, glowing with a sickly, malevolent fiery light, was a shadow-glass arrow. The phantom stepped toward the barrier, looking down at the kneeling, broken Headmaster. You forced this burden on me. The phantom whispered, its voice a horrific, distorted echo of Pyrrha's gentle tone. You sent a child to die for your war. My blood is on your hands, Ozpin. Ozpin let out a choked, agonizing sob. The emerald dome began to shatter.
That monster's vines reared back, preparing to drive a massive, thorny spike directly through the broken barrier to consume Oscar's mind. CLANG! A blinding flash of bronze and red blurred past the phantom. The real Pyrrha Nikos slammed her shield, Akoúo̱, directly into the phantom's face. The sheer force of her Aura-infused strike shattered the shadowy illusion into a million pieces of harmless black glass.
"Hold the line!" Pyrrha ordered her team, her green eyes blazing with unshakeable resolve as she spun Miló into its javelin form.
"Don't let those vines touch the dome!"
"You heard her! Keep hitting it!" Weiss commanded, launching a barrage of Ice Dust projectiles to freeze the encroaching roots. Pyrrha turned her back on the fighting. She looked at the cracked, flickering emerald barrier. Realizing that fighting the vines would accomplish nothing as long as that creature was being fed by the Headmaster's despair, Pyrrha took a deep breath. She stepped straight forward, phasing through the magical boundary of the dome. The noise of the battle outside instantly muffled.
Inside the barrier, it was cold and quiet. Oscar looked up at her, tears streaming down his face, trembling violently. Beside him, Ozpin remained on his knees. The ancient wizard, the architect of Remnant's defense, looked completely and utterly broken. He slowly looked up at Pyrrha, his spectral face drawn tight with a sorrow that spanned millennia.
"Miss Nikos..." Ozpin whispered, his voice trembling, barely audible over the sound of the cracking barrier.
"I... I am so sorry. I am so terribly sorry." Pyrrha walked slowly toward him.
"I placed the weight of the Maiden upon your shoulders," Ozpin confessed, tears of raw, unfiltered grief falling from his spectral eyes.
"I manipulated your sense of duty. I led you into the vault... I led you to your end. I have failed you, just as I have failed countless others. I am a relic, dragging children into a war they cannot win." The Nightmare Grimm outside shrieked, feeding on his confession, thrashing violently against the weakened shield. Pyrrha stopped in front of the Headmaster. She did not raise her voice. She did not look at him with pity, nor with anger. She looked at him with the profound, boundless compassion of a true Huntress.
She slowly dropped to her knees, placing herself at eye level with the ancient soul. She reached out, placing her warm, Aura-filled hand gently onto Oscar's trembling shoulder, offering the boy an anchor of safety. Then, she met Ozpin's devastated gaze.
"You gave me a choice, Professor," Pyrrha said, her voice soft, steady, and echoing with absolute truth. Ozpin blinked, his breath catching.
"You did not force me into that vault," Pyrrha continued, a gentle, radiant smile touching her lips.
"You did not force me to go back up to that tower to face Cinder. I made that choice. I chose to fight, not because I was manipulated, but because I am a Huntress. Because it was the right thing to do." The shadows pressing against the glass outside began to slow.
"You have made mistakes. You have kept secrets," Pyrrha said, her grip on Oscar's shoulder tightening reassuringly.
"But you have also kept this world standing for a very long time. And you don't have to carry the weight of it alone anymore." Pyrrha leaned forward slightly.
"I forgive you, Professor Ozpin. So, please... forgive yourself." The words hung in the cold, heavy air of the dreamscape. I forgive you. For the first time in what felt like centuries, the suffocating, crushing chains of guilt wrapped around Ozpin's ancient soul finally snapped. The deep, agonizing shadows in his eyes cleared, replaced by a sudden, blazing spark of profound hope. Beside him, Oscar felt the crushing despair lift from his own mind.
The farm boy took a deep breath, wiped his tears, and stood up, his fists clenched with renewed courage.
"We're with you, Professor," Oscar said fiercely. Outside the barrier, the Nightmare Grimm suddenly unleashed a horrifying, high-pitched shriek of absolute panic. Starved completely of its emotional food source, the massive, chaotic amalgamation of shadows and red vines began to rapidly wither. The thick, razor-sharp thorns turned a sickly, brittle gray.
"It's weakening!" Ren yelled, slicing through a crumbling vine. Ozpin stood up, retrieving his spectral cane. His posture was perfectly straight, radiating the absolute, unshakeable authority of the Headmaster of Beacon. He channeled the last of his ancient magic, passing it directly through Oscar. The boy raised his hands, his eyes glowing with a brilliant, blinding emerald light.
"Now!" Oscar shouted. The emerald dome detonated. A massive, concussive shockwave of pure magical energy swept across the shattered clock face, slamming into the weakened Nightmare Grimm and completely blowing away its outer layers of defense, exposing its pulsing, vulnerable core.
"Take it down!" Pyrrha commanded, stepping back out of the dome and raising her javelin. The team moved in perfect, devastating unison. Weiss cast a line of haste glyphs across the glass. Blake and Ren sprinted across them, crossing the distance in a millisecond to deliver a synchronized, cross-slash that severed the beast's remaining support roots. Nora used the momentum of a gravity glyph to launch herself high into the bruised clouds, coming down like a meteor with a fully charged strike of Magnhild.
The hammer slammed into the beast, cracking its core. Pyrrha finished it. She hurled Miló with everything she had, the javelin tearing through the air wrapped in a vortex of magnetic energy. It pierced the cracked core of the Nightmare Grimm directly in the center. That creature let out one final, voiceless scream before exploding into a massive cloud of harmless, gray ash. The students skidded to a halt on the glass floor, breathing heavily. Nora rested her hammer on her shoulder, wiping sweat from her brow.
"We... we did it," Oscar panted, a massive smile of relief breaking across his face as Ozpin's spectral form nodded proudly before fading back into the boy's subconscious.
"Great job, everyone," Pyrrha smiled, lowering her shield.
"Now, Shion just needs to pull us out, and we--" A deafening, terrifying CRACK echoed beneath their feet. The triumphant smiles vanished. The students looked down. The black-and-white checkered glass of the clock face was splintering rapidly. Without the Nightmare to anchor the dream, and without Shion Zaiden present in this specific mindscape to act as the extraction guide, the failsafe of the subconscious triggered. The dream was collapsing. The bruised violet clouds above them turned pitch black.
The golden gears stopped falling and simply dissolved into nothingness. The edges of the shattered clocktower began to violently implode, the suffocating, inescapable black void rushing inward to swallow them whole.
"Uh... guys?!" Nora yelled, her voice bordering on panic as the floor beneath her boots disintegrated into darkness.
"The dream is collapsing!" Weiss realized in horror, casting frantic glyphs that simply fizzled out in the dissolving reality.
"We have no exit door!" The void closed in around them, a crushing wave of absolute nothingness. The students and Oscar huddled together, raising their weapons and projecting their Auras in a desperate, final attempt to shield themselves as the darkness of the collapsing mind roared forward to bury them alive.
