The biting, sub-zero winds of Solitas howled against the reinforced hull of the Atlesian Manta airship as it descended through the heavy smog of Mantle. The vessel's thrusters roared, kicking up a violent flurry of gray snow and ice as it touched down smoothly just outside the massive, fortified entrance of the subterranean cyber-hubs. The heavy side doors hissed open, releasing the Vanguard into the freezing, desolate industrial sector.
Team RWBY stepped out first, their brand-new, thermal-weaved Atlesian gear keeping the brutal cold at bay. Qrow Branwen followed, his tattered cape snapping in the gale, trailing right behind the five elite members of the Ace Operatives: Clover, Harriet, Marrow, Elm, and Vine. Standing at attention around the heavy steel blast doors of the facility were a dozen shivering Atlesian soldiers, flanked by several towering, unblinking Atlesian Knight-200 androids.
Suddenly, a brilliant streak of emerald light parted the falling snow. Penny Polendina descended from the sky, the glowing green thrusters on her boots humming with high-tech precision. She landed gracefully beside Ruby, offering a bright, synthetic smile that completely defied the dreary atmosphere. Clover Ebi marched directly toward the commanding officer of the perimeter guard and an executive, his lucky clover pin gleaming under the harsh floodlights.
"Sir!" The two offered a crisp salute, though their breaths plumed in anxious white clouds"Status report," Clover requested, his voice sharp and professional.
"The situation inside the hub has deteriorated," the Sergeant explained.
"The Grimm numbers have increased significantly over the last few hours. We're spotting multiple Alpha types, mostly Ursai and Sabyrs."
"Furthermore, our initial sweeps encountered two Geists that actively engaged our patrols before retreating deeper into the ice tunnels. They managed to completely evade our lockdown," the executive added. Clover's eyes narrowed slightly, his tactical mind processing the complication. He turned back to the gathered soldiers.
"Keep your positions secure. Do not let anything slip past this gate. Stay sharp." Penny turned toward the four Huntresses, her mechanical eyes whirring softly as she clapped her hands together.
"Friends! Do not forget to utilize your newly issued Atlesian scrolls! The subterranean interference is quite high, so you must always keep your eyes and ears open!" As Penny spoke, Blake Belladonna reached into her new white-and-purple combat suit, pulling out her sleek, upgraded Scroll. With a smooth swipe of her thumb, a crisp, high-definition hologram screen deployed upward from the small device. Blake tapped on a small icon displaying a mugshot of Yang.
Instantly, a detailed biometric overlay expanded, displaying her teammates' Aura levels in real-time. Weiss's Aura sat at a comfortable 96%, Yang's at 97%, and Ruby's near-perfect at 98%. Blake tapped the hologram again, making the floating display recede back into the device. She turned the Scroll horizontally in her gloved hand. The built-in physical screen shifted, displaying four small, color-coded meters, one aligned on the top and three evenly spaced along the bottom.
The top meter, labeled with a stark 'B', was completely full. The bottom three were labeled 'R', 'W', and 'Y'. Just as Clover finished giving his final orders to the perimeter guards, Blake's left feline ear twitched violently beneath her cropped hair. She snapped her head forward, her amber eyes locking onto the dark, yawning abyss of the cyber-hub entrance. She could hear the faint, echoing scratches of bone against ice. The Atlesian Knights moved in mechanical synchronization, stepping aside to make way.
"Let's move out," Clover commanded. The Ace-Ops took the vanguard, stepping into the darkness of the subterranean cyber-hubs, followed closely by Qrow, Team RWBY, and Penny.
As they crossed the threshold, the sheer, breathtaking scale of the facility revealed itself. The cyber-hub was a mesmerizing, surreal collision of natural wonder and bleeding-edge technology. Massive, cavernous tunnels of ancient, glacial blue ice stretched deep into the earth. Embedded directly into the frozen walls were colossal banks of Atlesian servers. Their cooling fans humming loudly as thick, industrial cables pulsed with streams of cyan data-light beneath the permafrost.
The air smelled sharply of ozone, ancient frost, and the unmistakable, foul stench of Grimm. Clover and Qrow took the lead, their boots crunching softly against the frosted metal grating of the walkway.
"It's so nice that we finally work together again since Mistral!" Clover said, casting a charismatic, genuine smile over his shoulder at the grizzled Huntsman. Qrow kept his eyes fixed forward, his hand resting casually near the hilt of Harbinger.
"Gotta say, I'm still not really used to working with other Huntsmen in the field." Clover chuckled lightly.
"But you were on a team before, weren't you?" A heavy, melancholic shadow briefly crossed Qrow's crimson eyes. The ghosts of Team STRQ whispered in the back of his mind.
"Long time ago," Qrow muttered, his voice dropping into a raspy, defensive gravel.
"I just found working alone tends to be for the best."
"Well, I think that's a shame," Clover replied smoothly, his tone entirely devoid of judgment.
"You're a great team player though, at least from what I've seen." Further back in the formation, Team RWBY was seamlessly falling into step with the remaining Ace-Ops. The shared tension of the frozen labyrinth sparked a natural camaraderie.
"So, you kids really held the line at Haven Academy against Salem's inner circle?" Elm asked, her massive war hammer resting easily on her shoulder as she looked down at Yang with profound respect.
"Yeah, but it wasn't just us," Yang grinned, adjusting the collar of her new fleece-lined aviator jacket.
"We had some pretty insane training back at Beacon. Our security consultant would just stand in the middle of the arena and let us unload on him. He was completely invincible. If you can survive trying to punch a guy who breaks the sound barrier for fun, fighting normal assassins feels like a breeze." Harriet scoffed, crossing her arms.
"Invincible? Nobody's invincible, kid. Sounds like an exaggeration."
"She is absolutely not exaggerating," Weiss stated flatly, her pale blue eyes drifting over the massive servers embedded in the ice. Penny floated gracefully beside Weiss, her green eyes scanning the crystalline structures.
"This facility is a remarkable piece of history! It was originally one of the Schnee Dust Company's primary mining excavations from the era of Nicholas Schnee!"
"Indeed," Clover called back from the front.
"When the Dust veins ran dry, the military realized the natural, sub-zero temperatures of these glacial caves provided the absolute perfect cooling system for our massive data servers. It was retrofitted into Atlas's main network system to the world outside the Kingdom." Weiss looked at the frozen walls, a quiet, complicated pride swelling in her chest at the mention of her grandfather's legacy, untainted by her father's greed. Suddenly, Blake held up a clenched fist. The entire formation stopped dead.
"Up ahead," Blake whispered, her hand drifting to Gambol Shroud. The tunnel opened up into a vast, cavernous server farm. Prowling amidst the flashing cyan data-banks and towering pillars of ice was a terrifyingly large concentration of Grimm. Dozens of Beowolves and Ursai sniffed the frost, while a pack of massive, bone-plated Alpha Sabyrs paced aggressively near the central relay nodes.
"That's a lot of hostiles," Marrow muttered, his Faunus tail stiffening as he unhooked his boomerang rifle, Fetch.
"And they're dangerously close to the primary cooling lines. If we go in hot, we might damage the servers ourselves."
"We need a coordinated strike to control the aggro," Clover ordered, his tactical mind instantly taking the reins. He turned to the group.
"Ace-Ops and Team RWBY, we'll split into dual-combat pairs to maximize our coverage. Keep them away from the hardware. Penny, we need you on aerial overwatch to intercept any leaping Grimm. Qrow, you and I will flank right and hunt down the Alphas."
"Got it!" Ruby nodded fiercely, drawing Crescent Rose.
"Team RWBY, pair up with the Ace-Ops! Let's clear this room!" With a synchronized battle cry, the Huntsmen and Huntresses surged into the vast cavern. The Grimm roared, their glowing red eyes snapping toward the intruders as the battle erupted. Ruby triggered her Semblance, bursting into a flurry of rose petals. She rocketed straight down the center aisle, intending to decapitate a Beowolf. But Harriet Bree suddenly blurred right past her, her robotic exoskeleton augmenting her blinding speed.
"I've seen speed Semblances before, kid, but yours is different!" Harriet yelled over the clash of steel, punching an Ursa so hard it shattered into black mist.
"You aren't just running! You're breaking down your mass! Don't just treat it like a simple point-A-to-point-B sprint!" Ruby reformed, skidding on the ice.
"What do you mean?!"
"Optimize it!" Harriet instructed, dodging a Sabyr's claws.
"Use your momentum to carry objects, change directions instantly mid-air, and split your physical form into separate clusters of petals to evade attacks!" Ruby's silver eyes went wide with realization. A massive Alpha Sabyr lunged directly at her. Instead of dodging away, Ruby fragmented her body into three distinct, swirling clouds of rose petals. The beast snapped at empty air as the petals circumvented its massive body, reforming seamlessly behind it.
With a massive swing, Crescent Rose's newly upgraded rotating scythe-head cleaved cleanly through the Sabyr's spine. If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
"Like that?!" Ruby cheered.
"Exactly!" Harriet grinned fiercely. Across the cavern, Weiss was backpedaling, attempting to summon her massive Arma Gigas to block a horde of advancing Creeps. The intricate glyph took precious seconds to form. A Beowolf leaped over the server banks, its claws inches from her face. Marrow's boomerang spun through the air, striking the Beowolf in the jaw and knocking it aside before returning to his hand.
"Stop over-relying on the big, slow-moving summons in a close-quarters brawl!" Marrow barked, firing his rifle.
"You're leaving yourself wide open! Utilize rapid, smaller glyph casts and focus on agility to remain a difficult target!" Weiss's eyes narrowed in understanding. She abandoned the Arma Gigas, elegantly casting a rapid chain of miniature black gravity glyphs. She danced across them, her movements light and erratic, turning herself into an untouchable blur as she used Myrtenaster to precisely pierce the weak points of the disorganized Grimm.
"You're right. It is much more efficient!" Weiss praised. Nearby, Yang was engaged in a brutal slugfest with two heavily armored Ursai. She threw a heavy right hook, knocking one back, but hesitated slightly before following up. Elm crashed down from above, her massive hammer pulverizing the ice and the Grimm simultaneously.
"Put your back into it, kid!" Elm roared, her muscles bulging.
"Brute physical force is about maintaining frontline pressure! If you stagger them, don't give them room to breathe! Drive through the target!" Yang's violet eyes burned with a fierce, competitive thrill. Elm's advice perfectly echoed the terrifying, overwhelming pressure she had felt when trying to strike Saitama.
She stepped heavily into her stance, unleashing an explosive, unrelenting barrage of shotgun-propelled punches that completely overwhelmed the second Ursa, atomizing it in a blinding flash of golden fire. On the upper cat-walks, Blake swung Gambol Shroud's ribbon, intending to pull herself over a server bank. Vine Zeki extended his glowing, pale Aura arms, grabbing a leaping Sabyr right out of the air and effortlessly tossing it into a wall.
"Your ribbon is a versatile tether, but its trajectory is predictable," Vine advised calmly, floating gracefully downward.
"Do not just pull. Use your Aura to better manipulate your grappling weapon, guiding the cord to maximize your battlefield positioning." Blake adjusted her grip immediately. She infused her Aura into the ribbon, snapping it around a stalactite and altering her swinging trajectory mid-air with flawless precision. She glided cleanly over the battlefield, landing softly behind a pack of Grimm to unleash a devastating flank attack.
Elm rested her hammer on her shoulder, watching the four teenage Huntresses adapt and master their advanced techniques in a matter of seconds.
"Ha ha! Perhaps you kids won't get yourselves killed after all!" Elm bellowed heartily.
"She meant that as a compliment," Vine clarified serenely. Team RWBY, pausing briefly amidst the evaporating black ash, exchanged a deeply amused look. Because they had spent months desperately trying to survive Saitama's impossibly fast, hyper-dense evaluations back at Beacon, their physical foundations were extraordinarily strong. Adapting to the Ace-Ops' high-level tactical advice felt incredibly natural.
"Thank you!" Team RWBY laughed awkwardly in unison. Meanwhile, entirely separated from the main brawl, Qrow and Clover had pushed into a dark, narrow side tunnel coated in thick, jagged ice. A chilling, ethereal shriek echoed through the cavern. The elusive Geist darted through the air, an invisible, floating phantom seeking a host. Qrow raised Harbinger in its gun form, his crimson eyes tracking the spectral blur. He fired repeatedly, the heavy rounds echoing loudly.
But the Geist swerved and spiraled wildly around the icy tunnel walls, flawlessly evading every single bullet.
"It's fast," Qrow grunted.
"Let me try," Clover said calmly. Clover deployed his weapon, Kingfisher. With a flick of his wrist, he sent the specialized fishing hook whistling out at the Geist. The hook snagged the edge of its spectral cloak, but the Grimm shrieked, tearing itself free and just barely missing being captured. The Geist swooped frantically downward, diving directly into a massive chunk of ice that housed an ancient, rusted SDC minecart deeply embedded within it. The ice violently shuddered.
It rose upward, gathering more boulders, frost, and jagged metal to form a massive, hulking, makeshift body. Clover immediately readied his weapon, running forward to combat the newly formed rock-and-ice monster. Qrow hung back, observing the battlefield. As Clover charged, Qrow's sharp eyes caught a subtle, terrifying movement above them. The Geist's massive ice arm was pressing heavily against a rusted metal support beam, steadily pushing the structural pillar entirely off the tunnel wall.
"Wait, stop!" Qrow yelled, his voice raw with panic. Clover immediately halted his charge, turning to look at Qrow. Following the Huntsman's gaze, Clover noticed the groaning beam. With a sickening screech of tearing metal, the heavy support beam fell, crashing down and landing squarely in the gap between Clover and the Geist. The tremendous impact created a massive, blinding cloud of snow and pulverized rock dust.
When the cloud finally settled, the ground beneath the Geist had completely collapsed, leaving a gaping, dark sinkhole leading into the lower depths of the mine. The monster was gone. Clover stepped to the edge, looking down the hole, a deep frown creasing his features. Qrow ran up beside him, his shoulders slumping.
"Darn it," Clover muttered. He raised two fingers to his earpiece communicator.
"Target escaped. Be wary of your surroundings, it will reappear any minute." Clover lowered his hand, turning to Qrow with a sincere expression.
"Thanks for the call-out. That could have been bad." Qrow sighed, turning his head away, his voice thick with years of bitter self-loathing.
"I wouldn't thank me. My Semblance brings misfortune. Sometimes I can't keep it under control."
"That so?" Clover asked softly. Qrow looked at Clover, surprised to find the Atlesian operative looking back at him with a gentle, reassuring smile. Clover casually checked the display on his Scroll, then looked up at a severely bent, weakened support beam hanging dangerously close to the hole in the ground.
"Well, don't beat yourself up about it," Clover offered warmly. With a swift, practiced motion, Clover cast his line. The hook wrapped securely around the bent beam. He jerked Kingfisher down with a sharp tug. The beam gave way, pulling a massive amount of rock and ice down with it, effectively sealing the dangerous sinkhole and stabilizing the tunnel floor. Clover reeled his hook in, turning to Qrow with a bright, charismatic smile.
"My Semblance is good fortune. Lucky you, huh?" Clover winked playfully. Qrow blinked, utterly disarmed by the sheer, unwavering positivity of the man. For the first time in a very long time, the heavy burden of his cursed Semblance didn't feel quite so isolating.
"Yeah. Lucky me," Qrow muttered, a faint, genuine smirk touching his lips as the two veteran Huntsmen turned back toward the main cavern to clear out the remaining Beowolves, Ursai, and Sabyrs.
Back in the vast central server room, the combined forces of Team RWBY, Penny, Harriet, Marrow, Elm, and Vine had successfully decimated the ground forces.
"Clear!" Yang shouted, lowering her gauntlets as the last Ursa dissolved into ash. Suddenly, the ice beneath their boots began to violently tremble.
"We've got movement!" Blake warned, her ears pinning back. The frozen floorboards shattered. Erupting from the earth in a horrifying, coordinated ambush were numerous Centinels. The massive, segmented centipede Grimm hissed, their jagged pincers snapping wildly as they completely surrounded the Huntsmen and Huntresses, cutting off their escape routes.
"Form up!" Harriet barked, her exoskeleton sparking with electricity as she prepared to speed-blitz the swarm. Before the chaos could fully erupt, a low, terrifying rumbling noise echoed from the cavern ceiling directly above them. Everyone snapped their heads up. The Geist had reappeared. But it was no longer a simple amalgamation of ice and a rusted minecart. It had bonded with the ancient, unrefined Dust veins buried in the ceiling. It dropped from the shadows as a colossal, Frosted Petra Gigas.
The monster was terrifyingly massive, its frozen, rocky body embedded with glowing, volatile purple Gravity Dust crystals that crackled with dark energy. The beast plummeted from the ceiling, crashing brutally through an ancient stone archway on its way down. It landed with an earth-shattering boom directly in front of Team RWBY and the four Ace-Ops, the impact knocking several Huntsmen off balance.
"It's bonded with raw Gravity Dust!" Vine observed, his usually serene eyes widening in surprise.
"It is vastly stronger than a regular Petra Gigas!" The Frosted Petra Gigas let out a deafening, echoing roar, immediately swinging a colossal, purple-glowing ice fist directly at Team RWBY. Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang scattered, diving and rolling across the slick floor to dodge the devastating strike, which completely pulverized a nearby server bank.
Harriet, Marrow, Vine, and Elm intended to rush forward to assist the girls, but the army of Centinels immediately swarmed the Ace-Ops, their segmented bodies forming a literal wall of snapping pincers.
"I will assist Team RWBY!" Penny called out to the Ace-Ops. The android engaged her thrusters, flying gracefully into the air to engage the towering Gigas.
"We'll hold the line here! Break those bugs!" Qrow yelled as he and Clover sprinted into the main cavern, immediately joining the four Ace-Ops members to combat the writhing army of Centinels. The battlefield split into two furious, high-octane zones. Against the Centinels, the Ace-Ops operated with flawless, elite military precision.
"Stay!" Marrow shouted, throwing his hand forward. His Semblance flared, and three leaping Centinels instantly froze mid-air, entirely paralyzed by his command.
"Good boy!" Elm cheered. She utilized her Semblance, projecting deep Aura roots directly into the icy floor to lock her stance. Immovable, she swung her massive rocket-hammer like a baseball bat, shattering the frozen Centinels into a million pieces. Harriet was a blinding streak of lightning, her speed Semblance allowing her to dart between the segmented monsters, delivering rapid, devastating punches to their soft underbellies.
Vine extended his glowing Aura arms, grabbing two Centinels by their tails and violently smashing them together. While Qrow's heavy scythe and Clover's lethal, luck-guided hook-strikes systematically dismantled the rest of the swarm. Simultaneously, the battle against the Frosted Petra Gigas pushed Team RWBY to their absolute limits. The colossal monster swung a massive, Gravity-infused boulder attached to its arm. Ruby remembered Harriet's advice.
Instead of just running away, she activated Petal Burst, splitting her form into three distinct clusters of rose petals. The boulder smashed harmlessly through the center, and Ruby reformed seamlessly on top of the Gigas's arm, running up the limb to deliver a heavy slash to its shoulder joint. Weiss elegantly skated across the ice. Channeling Marrow's teachings, she abandoned her slow summons entirely. She cast a rapid-fire sequence of tiny, black Gravity glyphs, accelerating Yang forward like a human bullet.
"Let's see how much pressure you can take!" Yang roared, applying Elm's lesson of relentless frontline brutality. Yang didn't throw a single, isolated punch. She unleashed a continuous, unyielding barrage of shotgun-blasts against the beast's knee, shattering the purple Dust crystals embedded in the ice and forcing the colossal monster to drop to one knee. Blake utilized Vine's advice perfectly.
She infused her Aura into Gambol Shroud's ribbon, extending her control over the weapon as she threw it high into the cavern. The ribbon wrapped tightly around the Gigas's neck. Blake yanked backward, using her Semblance to leave a clone as an anchor, violently pulling the monster's head down.
"Penny, now!" Ruby shouted, leaping away from the beast.
"Firing!" Penny declared cheerfully from the air. The halo of floating swords behind her back locked into a circular array. A devastating, brilliant green energy laser blasted downward, piercing directly through the monster's frosted armor and entirely shattering its protective shell. The vulnerable, ethereal Geist shrieked as it was exposed to the freezing air. With a final, elegant spin, Ruby launched herself off a glyph provided by Weiss.
She swung Crescent Rose in a flawless, decapitating arc, slicing cleanly through the Geist's spectral mask. The monster dissolved into a massive cloud of harmless black ash. As the ash settled, Qrow and the Ace-Ops finished dispatching the very last of the Centinels. Harriet, Marrow, Vine, and Elm lowered their weapons, turning to look at Team RWBY. Their eyes were wide, completely impressed by the fluid, devastating execution they had just witnessed.
Even Penny was hovering nearby, her mechanical eyes glowing with absolute awe at her friends' combat proficiency.
"You guys were incredible!" Penny beamed, floating down to the ice.
"Thank you," Ruby smiled brightly, turning to the Ace-Ops.
"And thank you guys for the advice! It really helped us optimize our styles!" Weiss, Blake, and Yang nodded gratefully toward their respective mentors.
"Wow, look at you. With skills like that, you should've already got your official Huntress licenses!" Harriet rubbed her chin, giving Team RWBY compliment.
"Are we sure they're less experienced than us?" Marrow asked the rest of the Ace-Ops in bewilderment. Clover stepped up beside Qrow, watching the girls celebrate their victory. He crossed his arms, an impressed, calculating smirk on his face.
"Their reaction times and adaptability are practically elite," Clover commented softly to the veteran Huntsman.
"They are good. Too good, even, for Second-Year students." Qrow chuckled, taking a slow swig from his flask.
"Yeah, well. If you spend months trying to hit our 'Tactical Kinetic Evaluator' who treats the laws of physics like a joke, you learn to move a little faster." Clover raised an eyebrow, highly intrigued.
"I'm starting to wonder if we can borrow him to spar some other time. It sounds like a remarkable challenge." Qrow nearly choked on his liquor, violently coughing into his sleeve as he vividly imagined Saitama casually slapping Atlas's finest operatives through the ceiling.
"Uh... trust me, Clover. You don't want to do that." Before Clover could inquire further, his Scroll let out a sharp, rhythmic ping.
"I get a strong signal interference," Clover announced, his demeanor shifting back into absolute military focus as he looked at his device.
"It's not far from here. We've located the network blockade."
"Let's go then," Ruby declared, locking her scythe. With the Grimm cleared from the cavern, the eleven Huntsmen and Huntresses grouped up, continuing their dive into the deepest, darkest depths of the subterranean cyber-hubs to purge the shadow gripping Mantle.
