The heavy shadows of the Headmaster's office seemed to press inward, suffocating the room in a grim, silent aftermath. Raven Branwen's eyes fluttered open. Her first sensation was a profound, hollow emptiness in the very center of her chest. The roaring, elemental tempest of the Spring Maiden's magic that had resided within her soul for years was completely, violently gone. She winced, a phantom ache throbbing across her face and back as the horrifying memory crashed into her mind.
The searing heat of Cinder's fire blast shattering her Aura, the crushing weight of that creature, the Grimm arm, pinning her down to the cold floor. And the agonizing, suffocating terror of the Beetle Grimm's inky web latching onto her face, forcefully ripping the magic right out of her soul.
"Take it easy, Raven. You're barely holding together." Raven snapped her head toward the voice. Standing near the shattered window, bathed in the pale moonlight, was Qrow. His crimson eyes were bloodshot, his grip on Harbinger relaxed but ever-vigilant. Sitting in the high-backed chair opposite her was Oscar Pine, though his spine was perfectly straight and his hands rested elegantly upon the brass gears of The Long Memory. Ozpin was firmly in control.
Flanking the door like statues of white and gray were three Ace Operatives: Clover Ebi, Marrow Amin, and Harriet Bree. Their rifles were lowered, but their absolute military discipline remained intact. And kneeling in the center of the room, his wrists bound in heavy, Aura-suppressing cuffs, was Leonardo Lionheart, shivering in absolute, pathetic defeat.
"Yang..." Raven rasped, her throat dry as sandpaper.
"Where is Yang?"
"She's fine," Qrow answered, his voice softening just a fraction.
"She's downstairs in the courtyard with the rest of her team. A bit bruised, but she's walking." Raven let out a slow, trembling breath, the tension bleeding out of her shoulders. She looked down at her hands, the memory of her ultimate defeat burning in her chest.
"I shouldn't be awake," Raven whispered, the cold logic of her survival instincts kicking in.
"When that creature took the power with its web... it should have taken my mind with it. Amber was left in a coma."
"Amber's power was siphoned and the process was violently interrupted, leaving her soul fractured," Ozpin spoke, his ancient voice echoing softly through the young boy's lips.
"When Cinder stole the Spring magic from you in its entirety, your Aura shattered, but I was able to cast a localized stabilizing tether upon your soul before your consciousness fully unraveled into a comatose state. You are weak, Raven. But you will live."
"She has it all now," Raven muttered, her hands clenching into tight, trembling fists on her lap. Her cynical pride was entirely broken.
"Cinder... she absorbed it fully. She possesses two Maidens' worth of magic. We lost."
"You chose the wrong side, Raven," Qrow said, his tone devoid of its usual sarcasm, carrying only the heavy weight of disappointment.
"You let your fear of Salem blind you to the people who actually needed you."
"Don't lecture me on fear, Qrow!" Raven snapped, her eyes flashing with a desperate, defensive anger.
"You didn't feel her power in that vault! If it weren't for the cavern collapsing, she would have killed Yang! And Salem will only send more!"
"Yet, the Relic remains secure," Ozpin interrupted calmly, resting his chin upon his hands.
"Cinder fled before she could access the vault door. While she has gained immense power, the primary objective of their invasion was thwarted. For now, the door remains unopened." Raven froze. The mention of the vault sent a sudden, icy spike of realization through her heart.
"Vernal," Raven breathed, her eyes widening in horror. She looked up at Qrow, tossing the blanket aside.
"What happened to Vernal?" Qrow sighed heavily, dragging a calloused hand down his face.
"The local authorities and the kids are downstairs in the ruins of the vault right now. They're clearing out the bedrock."
"I have to go down there," Raven demanded, forcing herself to her feet. Her legs instantly buckled beneath her, but she caught herself against the arm of the sofa, gritting her teeth against the blinding pain in her back.
"Rae, sit down," Qrow warned, stepping forward.
"You're in no condition to move, let alone navigate a collapsed cavern. Wait until the path is fully cleared."
"I said I am going," Raven growled, her crimson eyes burning with a fierce, uncompromising desperation that brooked absolutely no argument. She refused to look weak. She refused to leave her most loyal subordinate alone in the dark. Qrow reached out to stop her, but Ozpin raised a gentle hand.
"Let her go, Qrow," Ozpin commanded softly.
"She has earned the right to say goodbye." Qrow clamped his jaw shut. He walked over, wrapping a supportive arm firmly around his sister's waist, letting her lean her weight against him as they hobbled out of the Headmaster's office.
The subterranean depths beneath Haven Academy were a graveyard of shattered bedrock and pulverized ancient roots. The air was thick with gray dust, illuminated by the harsh, sweeping floodlights set up by the Mistral Police rescue teams. The massive boulders that had buried the lower chamber had been completely tossed aside, a feat the authorities attributed to heavy machinery. But Team RWBY and Team JNPR knew had been casually handled by a certain bald man in a yellow suit.
At the center of the cleared path, surrounded by medics, lay a lifeless body. Vernal was covered by a crisp, white medical sheet. Her body was intact, having miraculously avoided the crushing weight of the falling rocks, but the gaping, fatal wound in her chest from Cinder's monstrous arm remained. Weiss Schnee stood a few feet away, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. She stared at the covered body, a deep, heavy sorrow in her pale blue eyes.
"I fought her just hours ago," Weiss whispered, her voice trembling slightly.
"She was so fierce. So utterly convinced she was doing the right thing for her family. To see her just... discarded like that by Cinder. It's horrible." Ruby placed a comforting hand on her partner's shoulder.
"It wasn't your fault, Weiss. Cinder is a monster." Footsteps crunched against the gravel. Yang turned her head, her violet eyes widening slightly as she saw Qrow carefully guiding Raven through the jagged archway of the cavern.
"Mom," Yang breathed, taking a hesitant step forward, reacting in shock that her mother was already awake and walking. Raven didn't look at her daughter. Her eyes were locked entirely on the white sheet in the center of the room. As she drew closer, the stoic, hardened mask of the bandit leader completely shattered. Raven broke away from Qrow's support, trying to run toward the medics. But her wounded body betrayed her. She stumbled violently, her knees giving out.
"Whoa, careful!" Yang darted forward, catching Raven by her right arm just as Qrow caught her left. If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
"I told you not to be reckless," Qrow scolded gently, hauling her back to her feet.
"Mom, you shouldn't be walking yet," Yang added, her voice laced with stern concern.
"Let me go," Raven rasped, her voice cracking with raw, unadulterated grief. She pushed them away, limping the final few feet until she collapsed onto her knees right beside the stretcher.
"Please, ma'am, you need to step back--" a Mistral medic began.
"Move," Raven snarled, her voice vibrating with such lethal, broken intensity that the medical team immediately took three steps back. Raven reached out with trembling, gloved hands, slowly pulling the white sheet back to reveal Vernal's pale, lifeless face. The young bandit looked peaceful, entirely stripped of the fierce, defiant sneer she always wore in life. Tears finally spilled over Raven's eyelashes, splashing onto the cold stone floor.
"I'm sorry," Raven whispered, her voice a fragile, broken thread echoing in the quiet cavern. She gently brushed a strand of hair from Vernal's cold forehead.
"I used you as a decoy. I put the target on your back to keep myself hidden. And you carried it with pride." Raven bowed her head, her shoulders shaking with silent, agonizing sobs.
"Thank you, Vernal. Thank you for your loyalty." Qrow, Team RWBY, and Team JNPR watched the scene in heavy, respectful silence. The cruel, pragmatic warlord they had fought against was gone, leaving only a grieving leader mourning the girl who had given everything for her. After a long minute, Qrow stepped forward, placing a gentle hand on his sister's shoulder.
"Come on, Raven. Let them do their jobs." Raven didn't fight him this time. She allows Qrow to help her to her feet as the medics respectfully covered Vernal's face and carried the stretcher away into the upper tunnels. As the emotional weight of the moment settled, Jaune stepped forward, looking past the cleared rubble toward the colossal, ancient wooden doors nested within the glowing roots of the great tree.
"So... what do we do about that?" Jaune asked, gesturing to the massive vault doors.
"Cinder didn't get the Relic, but Raven lost the Spring Maiden powers. Without her magic, that door stays permanently locked, right?" Qrow sighed, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Yeah, kid. It's an indestructible magical gateway crafted by the Brother Gods themselves. It can only be opened by the specific resonance of the Spring Maiden. Ozpin is racking his brain trying to figure out a backdoor, but right now? That Relic is sealed tight." Raven let out a dry, bitter chuckle, wiping her eyes.
"It doesn't matter," Raven muttered, her cynical nature bleeding back into her voice.
"You've lost. Salem has Cinder, and Cinder has two Maidens' worth of power. She will return, she will open that door, and she will slaughter all of you. You are playing a game you cannot possibly win."
"We haven't lost!" Ruby declared, stepping forward and planting the butt of Crescent Rose firmly against the ground. Her silver eyes burned with an unshakeable, radiant defiance.
"As long as we're still standing, there's always a way! Cinder might be strong, but we have each other! There is always hope. If we work together, we can beat her!" Raven looked at the young girl in the red hood, a phantom ache piercing her chest.
"You are so naive," Raven sighed softly, shaking her head.
"You truly are just like Summer." Before Ruby could respond to the mention of her mother, the sound of heavy, dragging footsteps and a rhythmic squeak echoed from the cavern entrance.
"Man, this basement is huge. Did I miss a pile of rocks over here?" Everyone turned around. Strolling casually into the mystical, ruined vault of Haven Academy was Saitama. He was wearing his garish yellow jumpsuit and white cape, his red gloves covered in a thin layer of gray dust. His bald head shining perfectly in the ambient glow of the magical roots.
"Oh, hey. The others said to me to check on you guys," Saitama greeted casually, raising a hand in a lazy wave. He looked past Team RWBY and spotted Yang supporting the dark-haired woman in the torn crimson dress.
"Hey, you're blonde girl's mom, right?" Saitama said, pointing a finger at Raven.
"You look terrible. Did you get hit by a rock or something?" Raven stiffened. Her crimson eyes narrowed into sharp, dangerous slits as she glared at the bald man. This is him? Raven thought, utterly bewildered by the complete lack of physical presence or Aura radiating from the man. This is the one my scouts told me about? The invincible anomaly that has Cinder shivering in the dark? He looks like a complete idiot!
"I'm fine," Raven snapped coldly, refusing to show weakness to this bizarre, carefree stranger.
"Right. Good to hear," Saitama muttered, already losing interest as his eyes drifted past her. He stopped, his dotted eyes blinking as he stared at the colossal, intricately carved wooden doors nestled within the glowing roots of the tree. The massive gateway was covered in ancient, glowing runes. It was completely exposed now that he had cleared the rocks away earlier.
"Whoa. What's behind the big, fancy door?" Saitama asked, tilting his head.
"It's the Vault, Saitama," Weiss explained, crossing her arms with a sigh.
"It contains the Haven's relic. But it's completely inaccessible."
"Relic? Like a magical tool or something?" Saitama asked in complete obliviousness.
"Yeah, baldy," Qrow added, leaning on Harbinger.
"It's an indestructible magical gateway. It was forged by the gods themselves. It cannot be forced open by any physical means. Not by massive military artillery, not by Dust explosives, not by anything. It strictly requires the matching magic of the Spring Maiden to unlock." Saitama blinked. He looked at the giant door. Then he looked at Team RWBY and Team JNPR.
"Wait a minute," Saitama said, rubbing his chin as he slowly pieced the logic together.
"So... you kids took a flying boat all the way across the ocean... to another continent... fought an army of monsters, nearly died, and blew up a school..." He pointed a red-gloved finger at the massive wooden frame.
"... just to open a door?" Ruby scratched the back of her neck, offering a highly awkward, sheepish grin.
"Uh... basically? Yeah, that was the mission." Saitama fell completely silent. He stood there for five full seconds, staring at the magical doors with an expression of profound, unadulterated deadpan disbelief. He took two casual steps forward, pulling back his right fist. He didn't wind up. He didn't drop his center of gravity. He delivered a simple, entirely unremarkable, lazy punch directly into the center of the ancient, indestructible, god-forged magical gateway. KRA-KOOOOM!!!
The impact sounded like a detonating supernova. The entire subterranean cavern violently shuddered. The indestructible magical doors didn't just break. They violently, catastrophically shattered into millions of glowing, glittering shards of absolute magical oblivion. The shockwave blew the surrounding ancient roots backward, tearing the very fabric of the magical seal into useless confetti. Saitama lowered his fist, blowing a speck of magical dust off his knuckles.
"There. It's opened." A dead, absolute, and terrifying silence descended upon the vault. Qrow Branwen's jaw unhinged so violently his silver flask slipped entirely from his grasp, clattering loudly against the stone floor. Weiss Schnee's brain literally blue-screened, her pale blue eyes twitching as her entire understanding of the laws of physics, magic, and reality spontaneously combusted.
Ruby, Yang, Blake and Team JNPR stood completely frozen, staring at the empty, shattered archway with their mouths hanging open. Even the Mistral authorities lingering near the back of the cavern dropped their heavy equipment in pure, paralyzing shock. Raven Branwen stared at the dust settling around the bald man's red boots. The cynical, untouchable worldview she had clung to for decades shattered right alongside the door. He just punched through the magic of the Brother Gods.
Raven thought, a cold, primal sweat breaking across her brow. He didn't even try. He just... broke it.
"Whoa..." Saitama mumbled, peering through the shattered archway. Beyond the door, there was no stone cavern. There was a vast, sprawling, infinite desert of golden sand beneath a brilliant, star-filled twilight sky. In the center of the desert, connected by a shimmering path of golden light, were three circular stone platforms.
"A desert? Inside a basement?" Saitama said, his voice laced with mild, comedic awe.
"That's super weird." He casually stepped through the threshold, his boots crunching against the magical sand.
"Wait! Saitama, stop!" Qrow suddenly yelled, snapping out of his shock and rushing forward.
"You can't just walk in there! It's a sacred dimension!"
"Saitama, get back here!" Ruby panicked, waving her arms frantically from the cavern floor. Saitama completely ignored them. He wandered along the golden path, looking around at the endless desert with wide-eyed curiosity. He stepped onto the final circular stone platform. Resting precisely in the center of the platform, levitating gently above a carved stone pedestal, was an ornate, antique lamp.
It was crafted of brilliant, gleaming gold, encrusted with flawless blue gemstones, and radiated a soft, ethereal blue mist.
"Oh, hey. A fancy lamp," Saitama noted. He casually reached out with a red-gloved hand and grabbed the Relic of Knowledge by its golden handle, yanking it right off its sacred pedestal.
"SAITAMA!!!" The synchronized, absolutely terrified shrieks of Team RWBY, Team JNPR and Qrow echoed loudly from the doorway. Saitama flinched, turning around with a deeply annoyed scowl.
"Alright, alright! Geez, keep your pants on! I'm coming back!" Saitama yelled back, sounding like a teenager being called down for dinner. He trudged back across the glowing platforms, stepping through the shattered doorway and back into the ruined Haven vault. He held the ancient Relic loosely by his side, swinging it slightly as he walked. He held the lamp up, presenting it to the stunned crowd.
"Is this the thing you guys were looking for?" Qrow stepped forward slowly, his hands trembling slightly as he stared at the artifact. He looked at Raven, who was staring at the lamp with equally wide, terrified eyes. The absolute cluelessness of the man holding the ultimate key to humanity's survival was completely baffling.
"Yeah," Qrow whispered, his voice breathless.
"That's the Relic of Knowledge." Saitama lifted the lamp higher, his dotted eyes scanning the intricate gold filigree and the massive, flawless blue jewels encrusted in its base. A sudden, brilliant, and entirely unheroic spark ignited in his eyes. The classic, comical symbols of Lien practically materialized in his pupils.
"This thing looks expensive," Saitama muttered, a wide, opportunistic grin spreading across his face. Qrow and the others, on the other hand... their expressions are dead serious. The sheer, apocalyptic horror of selling a cosmic artifact of the Brother Gods to a shady Mistralian pawn shop for grocery money hit the group simultaneously. Saitama tapped his fingernail on the gemstone "I wonder how much will I--""DON'T SELL IT!!!"
Team RWBY, Team JNPR, Qrow, and Raven all screamed at the exact same time, their voices echoing frantically through the ruined cavern.
