The rhythmic, stabilizing hum of the Atlesian Manta airship's interior provided a stark contrast to the biting, sub-zero winds howling outside its reinforced hull. Piloted with rigid precision by an Atlesian soldier, the sleek vessel broke through the final, dense layer of Solitas storm clouds, leaving the desolate, frozen crater of Mantle far below. Inside the pressurized cabin, the vanguard gathered near the panoramic windows, their breath momentarily catching in their throats.
Suspended impossibly in the freezing sky above them was the Kingdom of Atlas. It was a sprawling, breathtaking utopia of technological supremacy. Pristine, gleaming white skyscrapers pierced the heavens, connected by elegant arcs of hard-light bridges that glowed with a soft, cyan luminescence. Floating gardens and meticulously manicured parks were nestled between colossal military spires, all protected within the warm, climate-controlled embrace of a massive, kingdom-wide energy shield.
Compared to the dark, freezing squalor of Mantle below, it looked like a city forged by the gods themselves.
"Wow..." Ruby Rose whispered, her silver eyes expanding to the size of saucers, reflecting the shimmering city lights. She pressed her hands against the cold glass, a smile of pure wonder breaking across her face.
"It's absolutely gorgeous up here." Standing right beside her, Weiss Schnee's expression was vastly different. Her pale blue eyes were narrowed, devoid of any nostalgic warmth as she looked upon her birthplace. She crossed her arms tightly over her chest.
"Don't let the veneer fool you," Weiss murmured, her voice carrying a cold, aristocratic edge forged by years of gilded captivity.
"It looks grand from the outside, but the entire city is built on a foundation of cold expectations and suffocating control. Everything here has a price." In the plush row of seats directly behind them, Saitama leaned forward, resting his chin on his red-gloved hand as he casually peered out the window. Roman Torchwick's signature bowler hat perfectly concealing his shiny scalp.
"Hmm," Saitama mused, his flat, dotted eyes scanning the towering metallic spires.
"It kinda reminds me of A-City back in my home universe. You know, after they completely reconstructed it from scratch when Boros and his alien army blew it off the map." The entire cabin went dead silent for a fraction of a second. Team RWBY and Team JNPR exchanged deeply unsettled, bewildered glances, still entirely unable to process the casual, throwaway manner in which their invincible mentor brought up cosmic, apocalyptic invasions.
Sitting right next to him, Neopolitan, who was currently maintaining her Overactive Imagination Semblance to disguise her vibrant hair and combat gear as a mundane, brown-haired civilian in a beige coat, simply smirked. She pulled out her Scroll, her thumbs flying across the glass screen before shoving it into Saitama's line of sight. [Lots of things to steal.]"Don't even think about it," Saitama scolded flatly, swatting the Scroll away.
"I'm not bailing you out if you get caught lifting jewelry." Standing near the front of the passenger cabin, Winter Schnee turned away from the cockpit, her posture radiating absolute, unwavering military discipline. Her icy blue eyes swept over the group before locking directly onto the man in the bowler hat.
"I was informed of your presence amongst this vanguard, Mr. Saitama," Winter addressed him, her tone a perfectly balanced mixture of profound respect and administrative frustration.
"And I must say, it is an absolute honor to have you within the borders of Atlas." She took a slow step forward, her hands clasped strictly behind her back.
"However, I must express my profound disapproval regarding your negligence. General Ironwood and Headmistress Goodwitch explicitly ordered you to remain within the perimeter of Vale as a localized deterrent. To casually break that mandate and wander into the continent of Anima was incredibly irresponsible." Saitama slumped back in his seat, letting out a long, heavy sigh of pure exasperation.
"Hey, it was a complete accident. I was just trying to buy some cheap bananas, and the boat decided to leave while I was taking a nap," Saitama whined defensively, pointing a finger at the ceiling.
"Besides, I made a deal with the robot-arm guy. So long as the groceries keep flowing, I'll punch whatever monsters you need me to punch here." Winter pinched the bridge of her nose, letting out a sharp, exasperated sigh as she tried to reconcile the god-like entity before her with his utterly mundane, ridiculous priorities.
"Moving past the... groceries," Qrow Branwen interjected, stepping out from the shadows near the cockpit door. He unhooked his silver flask, though he didn't take a drink, his crimson eyes sharp and analytical.
"Let's talk about the welcome committee we just left on the tarmac. Those security guards were wound tighter than a coiled spring."
"Yeah, they were," Ruby agreed, stepping into the aisle.
"Even after we tried to reason with them in good faith, they looked like they were terrified out of their minds. It felt less like standard protocol and more like sheer panic." Pyrrha Nikos nodded, her green eyes filled with deep concern.
"A disciplined military unit shouldn't break formation that easily. They were entirely on edge."
"Fear breeds irrationality," Lie Ren observed calmly, his hands tucked neatly into the sleeves of his green tailcoat.
"Or maybe they just really needed a good nap and some pancakes!" Nora Valkyrie suggested, though her usual boisterous energy was noticeably muted by the tense atmosphere. Blake Belladonna's feline ears twitched beneath her black hair.
"It has to do with the situation in Mantle, doesn't it? The severed communications network to the rest of Remnant is just a symptom of a much larger problem."
"Keeping an entire kingdom isolated and freezing in the dark is the perfect recipe for a riot," Yang Xiao Long frowned, her fists clenching slightly. Weiss stepped forward.
"Winter... how deeply has the board deteriorated since the network fell?"
"Spit it out," Maria Calavera rasped from her seat, adjusting her cybernetic goggles as she leaned heavily on her wooden cane.
"We didn't fly halfway across the world just to be kept in the dark." Unauthorized use of content: if you find this story on Amazon, report the violation. Winter's severe expression darkened, a heavy, exhausted shadow falling over her features. She looked away from the window, her gaze sweeping over the battle-hardened faces of the students and Huntsmen.
"It has worsened significantly," Winter confessed, her voice dropping into a grim, clinical register.
"Ever since the central heating grid in Mantle was hacked, the temperatures in the lower city have plummeted to lethal levels. Our soldiers are exhausted, constantly deployed to manage the furious protesters demanding answers that we simply cannot give them. The lack of connection to the outside world, compounded by the highly volatile, ongoing Council elections, has stretched our resources to the absolute breaking point." Winter paused, her jaw tightening.
"But civil unrest is not our only concern. General Ironwood and I have recently received classified reports from the lower sectors. Several Atlas soldiers on patrol have been found dead." The cabin grew deadly quiet.
"They were not killed in riots," Winter continued, her eyes locking onto Qrow.
"The autopsies confirmed they died from precise, lethal stab wounds... laced with a highly specific, rapidly acting venom."
"Stab wounds with venom?" Qrow narrowed his eyes.
"The assassin in Mantle must be a very skilled one. Maybe it's a scorpion Faunus."
"We suspected as much," Winter nodded tightly.
"The military units are actively searching every sector of Mantle for their whereabouts. They must be a technological genius and a phantom. We still haven't found them." The heavy, apocalyptic dread of Salem's inner circle operating freely within the kingdom settled over Team RWBY and Team JNPR like a physical weight. The shadow war was already raging right beneath their feet. In the back row, however, Saitama hadn't listened to a single word of the political briefing.
He was entirely checked out, his face pressed against the thick glass of the window. He was staring down at a massive, glowing commercial plaza floating by in the distance.
"Hey, umbrella girl, look at that shiny building over there," Saitama muttered, completely oblivious to the tension in the room.
"Do you think they have a massive supermarket on the top floor? The layout here is so confusing. I hope the beef is actually as good as they said." Neo simply smiled, offering a firm, enthusiastic nod as she looked out the window with him, already plotting the most efficient routes to shoplift luxury desserts.
The Manta airship banked gracefully over the glittering skyline, descending rapidly toward the colossal, imposing structure of Atlas Academy. Built like an impenetrable fortress of knowledge and military might, the academy dominated the center of the floating city, its massive spires reaching proudly into the sky. The airship flared its thrusters, touching down flawlessly onto a sprawling, snow-dusted exterior landing platform just outside the grand courtyard. With a heavy hiss, the cargo doors slid open.
Winter stepped out first, followed closely by Qrow, Oscar, Maria, and the rest of the Vanguard. Bringing up the rear, Saitama stepped onto the tarmac. In his left hand, he lazily carried a crinkling plastic grocery bag filled with his remaining snacks from Mistral. Under his right arm, he securely tucked a cloth garment bag containing his iconic yellow hero suit.
As they walked across the massive, open-air bridge connecting the landing pad to the main courtyard, the sheer, majestic scale of Atlas Academy left the students speechless.
"It's incredible..." Oscar breathed, his eyes tracing the towering, spotless white architecture.
"It definitely makes Beacon look a bit... rustic," Jaune admitted, shivering slightly as the freezing Solitas wind whipped past his armor. Saitama looked up at the towering dormitory spires stretching into the clouds. He rubbed his chin through the collar of his trench coat, a mild, practical concern crossing his blank face.
"Hey, white girl," Saitama called out Weiss casually.
"If that fancy heated penthouse you promised me falls through, do you think they'll just give me a dorm room here? Because as long as there's no draft and a microwave, I don't really care where I sleep." Weiss halted, turning around to fix him with an incredibly offended, aristocratic glare.
"I assure you, Saitama, my promises are absolutely ironclad," Weiss huffed, placing her hands on her hips.
"You will have your luxury penthouse. A Schnee does not back out of a negotiation!" Before Saitama could respond, a bright, overwhelmingly energetic voice echoed across the courtyard.
"Oh my gosh! No way! Is that Team RWBY and JNPR?!" The group turned to see two familiar figures jogging across the snowy flagstones toward them. Leading the charge was Neon Katt, her rainbow-colored hair bouncing wildly as she practically skated over the ice in her specialized rollerblades, her feline tail whipping back and forth in pure excitement. Right behind her, looking effortlessly cool in his fedora and suspenders, was Flynt Coal.
"Well, look what the cat dragged in," Flynt grinned, tipping his fedora as he approached.
"Long time no see, Vale."
"Flynt! Neon!" Ruby cheered, her silver eyes lighting up with genuine joy as she rushed forward.
"It's so good to see you guys!" Yang laughed, offering a bright smile as she gave Neon a high-five.
"It's been a while since the aftermath of the Breach back at Beacon!"
"You guys look totally amazing!" Neon beamed, zipping in circles around the group.
"I love the new outfits! Super tactical, super fresh! What brings you all the way up to freezing old Atlas?!"
"It's a long story," Blake offered a faint, diplomatic smile.
"We have a lot of official business to attend to," Ren added smoothly, nodding respectfully to the two Atlas students. As Flynt and Neon exchanged greetings with the rest of the teams, Flynt's sharp eyes drifted toward the back of the group. He paused, his gaze locking onto the man standing in the crisp black suit, white trench coat, and bowler hat. Flynt's brow furrowed. He squinted, taking in the man's incredibly flat, blank, deeply unbothered facial expression.
"Hold on a second..." Flynt muttered, stepping closer.
"Ain't that the guy who cleared the sky back at Beacon?" Neon stopped skating instantly. She zipped over, leaning down to peer directly under the brim of the bowler hat. Her eyes widened to the size of saucers, an ecstatic, massive grin breaking across her face.
"Wait! The cue-ball?! IT IS!" Neon shrieked in delight, pointing a finger directly at him.
"Hey, Mr. Saitama! Looking sharp! I love the mob-boss aesthetic! What are you doing all the way up in Atlas?!" Saitama completely froze. The grocery bag in his hand crinkled loudly in the sudden, dead silence. His dotted eyes shrank to tiny pinpricks, and a massive, comical sweatdrop erupted on the side of his head.
"W-What?!" Saitama panicked, his voice cracking violently as he waved his free hand in front of his face, desperately trying to pull the brim of his hat lower.
"No! You definitely have the wrong guy! I have lots of luxurious, thick hair under this hat! I am a very normal businessman! I am definitely not the Hero of Vale!" Neon burst into a loud, ringing fit of laughter, clutching her stomach.
"Yeah, right!" Neon giggled, wiping a tear from her eye.
"Nice try, but nobody in Remnant has a face as unique as yours! It's literally like an egg drawn by a toddler! I'd recognize that blank stare anywhere!" Saitama's shoulders instantly slumped to his waist. His soul practically exited his mouth in a ghostly wisp of pure, unadulterated defeat.
"My disguise is completely useless..." Saitama groaned miserably, his head dropping as he accepted his fate. Jaune and Ruby immediately covered their mouths, bursting into awkward, highly strained laughter, while Weiss pinched the bridge of her nose in sheer exasperation. Winter stepped forward, her posture rigid, immediately cutting off the comedic reunion with cold, military authority.
"Flynt. Neon," Winter commanded, her icy tone demanding absolute attention.
"This operation is strictly classified at the highest levels of the Atlesian Military. Mr. Saitama's presence here is a heavily guarded secret. I need your absolute, unquestionable discretion." Flynt's smile faded into a look of serious, professional understanding. He adjusted his fedora, offering the Specialist a crisp, respectful nod.
"You don't have to worry about us, Specialist Schnee. You can count on Team FNKI." Neon immediately mimed zipping her lips shut, throwing away an imaginary key with a bright, supportive wink.
"Secret's safe with us!" Winter exhaled a short breath of relief, turning her gaze toward the massive, imposing doors of the central administrative spire.
"Good. Now, come along," Winter instructed the Vanguard, her cape snapping in the freezing wind as she led the way.
"The General is waiting."
