Danny was in the school when the column came through the gate. He was running the evening session — the small group of older students who came after the regular day's work was done, who had been coming since November when he had started the session specifically for them, children twelve and older whose regular school curriculum had begun to feel insufficient and who had found in the evening session a context where the work matched what they could actually do.
He was midway through a problem he had designed specifically for the session — a construction problem, a thing to be built, the mathematics emerging from the requirement rather than preceding it. The students were deep in it, arguing about approaches in the specific productive way of people who are genuinely engaged rather than performing engagement. He heard the gate open.
He heard, through the school's window, the specific sound of a column of horses and soldiers coming through a gate and into a courtyard — the particular acoustic signature of a returning force, different from the sound of a departing one in ways that had taken him a year to be able to articulate and that he now recognized automatically. He looked at the window for a moment. Then he looked at the students. This narrative has been purloined without the author's approval. Report any appearances on Amazon.
"Work on it," he said.
"I'll be back in ten minutes." He left the school at a pace that was not running but was close to it, moving through the market square that was still busy in the early evening, through the gap in the inner wall that led to the castle courtyard.
The courtyard was organized in the specific way of a returning engagement — the wounded being assessed, equipment being collected, the garrison soldiers debriefing in pairs and small groups while Hollis moved through the space with the systematic efficiency of a first sergeant who knew exactly what post-operation management required. Marcus was talking to Hollis at the courtyard's center. Danny stopped at the courtyard's edge and looked at him. Marcus looked back. Neither of them said anything for a moment.
The courtyard moved around them — the activity of return, of accounting, of the specific organized relief of people who had gone somewhere difficult and come back. Danny looked at the column. Counted. Did the math his training gave him automatically.
"Three wounded," he said.
"None critical," Marcus said. Danny absorbed this.
"Confluix?" he said.
"Effective," Marcus said.
"The core is disrupted. Confluix is monitoring the fragments." Danny absorbed this too. Then, in the specific register of a thirteen-year-old who had been in the castle all day doing what Marcus had told him to do because Marcus had asked him to and whose confidence in the asking was being confirmed in this moment by what he was seeing: "How long before we know it held?"
"Six months," Marcus said.
"For full confirmation."
"And until then?"
"We monitor," Marcus said.
"And we continue what we're doing." Danny nodded. Then he turned and went back to the school, and Marcus watched him go, and the evening continued in the courtyard around him.
