February brought the forge expansion to completion. Briggs had been working on it since the previous spring — fourteen months of careful, sequential work, each phase enabling the next, the kind of engineering process that required patience at every stage and produced results that were not visible until the sequence was sufficiently complete for the cumulative effect to manifest. The blast furnace was operational.
It was not, Briggs was careful to specify, the kind of blast furnace that the nineteenth century had built — the scale was wrong, the fuel supply was constrained by the charcoal kiln's output, the design was limited by the refractory materials available.
But it was functional in the ways that mattered: it produced a substantially higher smelting temperature than the previous forge, and that temperature difference produced iron of a substantially higher quality, and that quality difference changed what was possible downstream. Marcus came to the forge on the morning of the first full production run. Briggs was there with Brennan and three of the ironworkers who had been part of the expansion team since autumn.
The fire had been running since before dawn, reaching the temperature the process required, and the first pour happened mid-morning. He watched Briggs watch the pour. The old man's face — the face that was not quite his, the body that was not quite his, worn by fifteen months of physical work in a climate that was harder on it than its original inhabitant had probably imagined when it was young — had a quality Marcus had been watching for a long time and did not often see: complete satisfaction.
Not the satisfaction of completion, though this was completion. The satisfaction of a craftsman who has been working toward a quality of output and has arrived at it and knows, because they know their craft, that what they are looking at is right. "That's the grade we needed," Briggs said, when the pour had cooled enough to assess. Brennan picked up the cooled test piece with his tongs, examined it, tapped it with a small hammer, listened to the sound it made, turned it over, and looked at Briggs with the expression of a craftsman who has been given a tool better than what he was used to.
"How?" Brennan said. Not accusatorially. With the genuine curiosity of a master craftsman who wanted to understand.
"Temperature and flux," Briggs said.
"The higher heat changes what happens to the impurities. The limestone draws them out in ways that lower temperature can't achieve." He paused.
"The specific properties of this ore, at this temperature, with this flux — the result is what you're holding."
"I've never seen iron this color," Brennan said.
"You've never made iron this quality," Briggs said.
"From here on, you will." Marcus stood back and watched Brennan and Briggs and the three ironworkers in their conversation about the properties of the test piece, the implications for the work they could now do, the specific applications that this quality of iron made possible that the previous quality had not. He was not a metallurgist. He did not have the technical vocabulary to participate in that conversation. But he understood what it meant, which was: the downstream sequence had changed.
Everything that depended on iron quality — the weapons, the structural components, the mechanisms that Briggs was designing for the phases that followed this one — had just become more possible. He went to find Hollis and told him the forge had reached capacity. Hollis said, "The garrison weapons need replacing."
"I know," Marcus said.
"Make a list. In priority order." The list was on his desk by the following morning, with Hollis's characteristic precision: which weapons, in which order, with the specific performance improvements each replacement would produce and why those improvements mattered for the defensive scenario they were planning for. It was the work of a professional who had been waiting for this resource to become available and had been ready when it did. Marcus approved the list and sent it to Briggs.
Briggs sent back a production schedule that was faster than Marcus had expected, which was itself information about what the blast furnace had changed.
