Maeve reached the room and looked back. Adam was still facing the other direction, his red eyes moving across the area. Three soldiers lay nearby after Adam burned them. One held his shoulder while another held his chest. The third held his stomach. The burns had forced them down, but they were still conscious. Adam had held back, so the burns had not killed them. None of them could continue the fight. Adam had been thinking about what was happening around him. Adam turned off his laser vision and faced Maeve.
"Hmm. I can sense them." Maeve opened the gate in front of her. Starlight was standing inside the room. The moment Annie saw that the gate was open, she jumped out. Lightning gathered around her. She prepared to attack. Maeve was directly in front of her. Annie was about to attack Maeve when she noticed Adam from the side of her vision. He was standing nearby. She stopped the attack when she saw him. Annie jumped past Maeve and landed in front of her.
"Adam, what are you doing here?" Adam smiled at her.
"What do you mean? I came here to save you." Annie had not expected to see him there. She remained standing in front of Maeve, still surprised by his arrival. Adam walked toward her. When he reached her, he gave her a small fist bump on the shoulder.
"Are you going to stand here, or are you going to free your mother too?" Maeve smiled at Annie. Then she moved toward the other room. Donna was inside that room. Maeve opened the gate and brought Annie's mother out. Donna came out of the room and stood with Annie. Adam looked back toward the soldiers. He could sense that a large number of them were still nearby, but none of them was moving forward. Fear had begun to spread through them. They had seen Adam's power while fighting him.
They understood that Adam's power was similar to Homelander's. No officer had told them that before they entered the building. They had discovered it only after trying to fight Adam. None of them wanted to be the next person to move toward him. Adam looked at Annie.
"We need to get out of here." At that moment, Hughie came out of another room. He looked worried when he saw Adam with Annie and her mother.
"Adam. Lamplighter." Adam looked toward him.
"Now isn't the time. Let's get out of here." He started moving, with the others following him. The group began leaving the area together. Maeve remained behind and said, "I'm staying here." Adam stopped and looked back at her. Maeve was still standing near the room, and she had already decided that she would not leave with them. Adam walked back toward her.
"I understand your situation. I'll help you, just like you asked. But I need one more thing from you." Maeve looked at him and stopped.
"Okay. Tell me." Adam moved closer and leaned toward Maeve's ear. He whispered something to her, but the words were not heard. Then he moved away. Maeve stared at him for a few seconds. She did not ask him to repeat himself.
"Okay." Adam turned away and left her. He returned to the corridor, where the group was waiting. Adam moved ahead of the group by flying through the corridor. Every soldier who saw him froze for a few seconds. They had already seen what he could do. They knew that moving toward him was dangerous, but some of them still tried to raise their weapons. Whenever a soldier lifted a weapon and fired at Adam, Adam immediately used his heat vision. The red light struck the soldiers before they could fire again.
The soldiers fell back from the attack. The ones who had raised their weapons stopped trying to fire. No one moved toward Adam or tried to block the group. He continued through the corridor in front of them, and the group followed. Adam kept moving until he and the group came out of Vought. The soldiers did not follow them. Meanwhile, Edgar stepped inside Vought. He had entered the building after Adam had left. The sight in front of him confused him. Soldiers were lying across the area.
Some were unable to stand, while others were still trying to move away from the places where Adam had attacked them. Edgar looked around once. Then he called the highest-ranking security officer still present in the building. The officer came to him.
"Sir, one person came through here." The officer showed Edgar the video from the security system. The footage showed Adam moving through the building while the soldiers stopped or fell back. It followed the corridor until Adam moved out of Vought. The corridor was clear. Edgar watched it in silence. Edgar watched the video carefully. He recognized Adam immediately. This was the same person Edgar had wanted to recruit. The footage showed that Adam had entered Vought and escaped through the building.
Edgar watched until Adam disappeared from the frame. A small smile appeared on Edgar's face.
"How many casualties?" The security officer looked at him.
"Sir, three of our soldiers are dead." Edgar nodded once. The officer continued speaking.
"But they died from blood loss."
"It doesn't even matter." Edgar kept looking toward the footage. A few minutes later, Homelander and Stormfront stepped inside Vought. They came into the building and saw the condition of the area. The color drained from their faces. The soldiers were still lying on the floor. Some were holding the parts of their bodies that had been burned. The entrance and the area around it had been damaged, and the result of Adam's attack was visible throughout the building. Homelander looked toward Ashley.
"What happened here?" Ashley was just as confused. She looked around the building, unable to understand how the soldiers had been defeated. Before she could answer, a Vought employee came toward them.
"Sir, Mr. Edgar is calling for you."
