Adult Eleven stepped out of the room and turned aside. Several guards ran toward her through the corridor, their guns already raised. Lamplighter saw Adult Eleven and immediately ran back. He knew what she could do. He did not want to stay near her while she was free. The guards reached the corridor. Their guns were pointed at Adult Eleven. She faced them. One hand rose. Her fingers moved through the air in a single motion, sending something forward without touching any of them. She did not step toward the guards.
The force reached them before they could fire. No shot reached her. The guards began to burst apart. Their bodies split open from the inside as if explosives had been placed inside them. The guards died in succession. The final burst left none of them standing. Adult Eleven did not stay near the guards. She turned toward the cells and raised both hands in front of her. The subjects inside those cells were still wearing the white clothes given to them for the tests. The gates were pulled inward first.
They were dragged toward the cells as if something had caught hold of them from the other side. The iron doors did not stay there for long. A moment later, the gates burst outward. The whole row of cells opened. The subjects began coming out one by one. Each of them stepped out of the cells in the same white test clothes and entered the corridor. White clothes filled the space as the subjects came out. They had been locked inside until that moment, but now every path in front of them was open.
They kept coming out as the opened cells remained behind them. They did not know that Adam had remained behind the others. They only saw him standing near the corridor where the guards had fallen. The nearest person they could see who might attack them was Adam. He had fallen behind the others when Adult Eleven came out, but he had not stayed far away. Love this novel? He had watched the whole moment, from the guards reaching for their guns to the cells opening. He had not gone far enough to lose sight of them. Adam had no fear. He knew what he could do. Adam stayed where he was and watched the subjects come out. He kept the escape route in view and did not move back from it. Another subject stepped forward. He was a heavy man with a beard. He moved closer to the corridor, and something began moving beneath his pants. The man kept moving. Adam looked down at the movement.
He did not remember the subject in complete detail, but he remembered him when he saw the movement. The strange ability came back to him before the man's face did. That was enough for recognition. Love Sausage. The subject's ability began to extend from beneath his pants. Adam understood that it could become much longer if he allowed it to continue. He knew it could stretch far beyond a normal length.
The man continued moving toward Adam, and the movement beneath his pants became longer in front of the other subjects. The other subjects saw it and stopped. Adam did not wait to see how far it could go. His reaction came before the ability could reach him. Adam could not stop himself.
"Fuck this." His eyes turned red. Before the ability could extend any farther, a fast laser beam shot out of Adam's eyes and struck the man's chest. The strike left no time for the attack to continue. The beam tore through the chest. The subjects who had just come out of the cells stared at Adam in shock. Adult Eleven was also looking at him from behind the group, watching the attack pass through the man in front of her. The bearded subject lowered his neck and looked down at his own chest.
Large holes had opened on both sides of it. Blood slowly came from his mouth, and his body fell backward onto the corridor floor. He fell without a word. Adam looked at him. He thought that if the thing had touched him, he would not have been able to sleep at night. The subjects standing with Adult Eleven became afraid when they saw what Adam had done. They had seen what happened to the bearded man. They knew who Homelander was, and Adam's power made them think of him immediately. They stayed close to Adult Eleven.
They did not look away from Adam. The body lay on the floor beside him. They could not tell whether Adam was protecting the facility or waiting for anyone who came out of the cells. They looked at Adam as if Homelander or Starlight had placed him inside the facility to guard it. They did not know why he was there, but they thought he might be the person waiting for anyone who escaped from the cells. The entire moment froze. Nobody understood whether they should run or stay in place.
None of them moved toward the corridor. Their eyes moved between Adam and the open cells. Some of the subjects looked back at the open cells and thought that returning inside might be better than remaining in front of Adam. Then one of the subjects suddenly turned around and started running away from him.
"Fuck this shit! I am never getting caught by him!" His shout broke the stillness in the corridor. Another subject turned and ran as well. Then a second group began moving, and soon the subjects were running in different directions after seeing the first one escape. The escape spread through the opened cell block. Adam watched the others scatter. Then he looked toward Adult Eleven.
"Come on, Adult Eleven," Adam thought.
"Now I want to see what you can do." But Adult Eleven was running too. She did not wait for the others. She had already moved away from the opened cells and was escaping through the corridor with the other subjects. Adam stared at her in shock.
