The three genins took the chakra paper that Choza handed them and put chakra into it one by one. Guy went first and put his chakra into the paper. It went to flames right away, burning brightly in his hand for a moment before turning to ash.
"Fire chakra. Very natural for someone born in Konoha and the Land of Fire. And also one of the two of my affinities so I can teach you a lot about it," Choza said. The large jonin sounded pleased with the result. He knew fire release was common in their village because of the environment and history of the Land of Fire. This affinity would let him guide Guy well in future training sessions.
"Yosh, my burning youth has translated into my chakra also burning with the passion of my youthfulness," Guy said in his loud and excited voice. Shunsui let out a sigh.
"Guy, I do not think that is how that works." Shunsui found the idea of personality directly turning into chakra types a bit strange. He shook his head lightly, thinking about how Guy always made everything just about youth. Choza said, "He might not be wrong. There are theories about a person's personality affecting their natural chakra affinity." Shunsui said, "That does not make sense. What if the personality of a person changes when he is twenty? Would his chakra affinity also change?"
The question made Choza pause for a moment. The large man thought about it but did not want to look like a sensei who could not answer his students doubts so he did the smart thing by changing the topic. He cleared his throat and smiled again.
"Alright let us move on to Genma," Choza said as Shunsui gave him a side eye. Shunsui clearly noticed that his sensei avoided giving a full answer, but he did not push the matter further. Genma put chakra into his paper and the paper was cut apart first. Then both halves burst into flames at the same time. "A dual affinity huh," Choza said with raised eyebrows. He looked impressed by what he saw. Dual affinities were not very common, and they could make a shinobi more versatile in battle.
"Is having dual affinity good or bad sensei?" Genma asked in his calm way. He wanted to understand exactly what this meant for his future training and fighting style.
"It has both pros and cons. In your case more pros than cons. The cons are that if you want to master both natures it would take a lot of your time but you can still focus on one chakra nature if you want so it is not much of a con. Another con is some of them who have a single chakra affinity become masters of that element to a very high degree which you might not get a chance to try," Choza said.
'Like Danzo in wind release, Tobirama for water release, Kakashi for lightning release,' Shunsui thought. He remembered powerful figures from stories and history who specialized deeply in one element. Shunsui knew that single affinity users could sometimes push their chosen nature to extreme levels that dual users might struggle to match in that specific area.
"The pros are that it would be easy for you to master two chakra natures easily giving you more variety in a battle so you could counter other shinobi more readily. And with you having fire and wind, you can use combination jutsus like the third Hokage. Although we would have to work on your chakra capacity for that," Choza explained as Genma had a thoughtful look on his face.
"I think I should tell you another thing. Your chakra paper first cut into two and then both sides burst into flames. It means you have a very strong affinity for wind and then fire," Choza said. He pointed out the order of the reaction to help Genma understand his strengths better.
"If both of those things happened together, it would mean you would have had a Kekkei Genkai and if I am not wrong fire and wind release would form scorch release." Choza explained what Kekkei Genkai meant in simple words. Genma looked interested but also relieved that he did not have such a rare power, as it might bring extra attention to their team which they did not need with Shunsui already with them.
"Now Shunsui, it is your turn," Choza said and Shunsui put chakra into his chakra paper. The paper soaked wet immediately, becoming damp and heavy in his hand. Water dripped from it slightly as the reaction finished.
"Water release.... very rare in Konoha. It would be tough to find a teacher for you but I am sure that I could find someone so do not worry about it," Choza said. Shunsui thought, 'I will take water release. I wonder if the Hokage would let me learn Second Hokage's water release jutsu. But even without them, I kinda like water release.'
'It might have drawbacks of being near water sources but with my chakra levels, I could just create my own water like Kisame without problems of exhausting my chakra,' Shunsui thought. His large reserves of chakra would let him make water whenever he needed it without depending on the environment. This made the affinity feel like a good match for him despite being rare in Konoha.
"Well now we know your ability is not something of a Kekkei Genkai that is not formed with merging of two elements," Choza said.
"So now can we learn jutsus?" Shunsui asked with some hope in his voice. He was eager to start using real techniques after learning his chakra nature.
"You cannot just move to jutsus. There are many steps that come before that. You have already done chakra control training and finding your chakra affinity so that is two steps down. A lot more to go," Choza said with a chuckle.
"Of course, why cannot things be easy?" Shunsui complained under his breath.
