[Time]: Autumn Semester, Day 7 — 9: 34 AM [Location]: Yggdrasil Academy · Dormitory [Golden Bough] · Room 302 Rhode's file landed at four minutes and eleven seconds, transcribed off a hangover and a mouthful of something, a single unpunctuated avalanche of a woman who had rolled over to talk into the crystal without opening both eyes: Right so the problem is that half the bill is buying you nothing. Hattie.
Your deprivation matrix takes the heat out of the volume and then you vent it, you built a machine that steals heat and bins it and then pays cash for a fire effect, that's two piles of money for one thing. Pipe the stripped heat into the illusion layer and let the corona burn on it, that ring was always supposed to be the heat you stole. Brightness reads out how much you've taken, so the colder that field gets the brighter it burns. Your front end is a gauge instead of a receipt. Also eat lunch.
Underneath the recording, a photograph: a bar receipt turned face-down and covered corner to corner in a thermal budget, total circled twice. A wet ring from a glass went straight through one of the coefficients, and the coefficient was still legible, because she had written over it harder. Hathaway sat with the quill in her fist and her mouth slightly open. She just cut forty percent off the total cost while lying down, on the back of the bill for the reason she was lying down.
And then she checked whether I'd eaten. [Strawberry Parfait ♡]: [attachment: The Turning Crown of the Undiminished, 1 sheet] [Strawberry Parfait ♡]: A sun gives, niece. A thing that only takes is a hole in the sky, and your own note in the margin forbids a hole. [Strawberry Parfait ♡]: So make it give. Twelve spokes of total deprivation, radiating, with ordinary air in the wedges between, and let the whole wheel turn slowly.
[Strawberry Parfait ♡]: And since there is no light in there to find the wedges by, your illusion will supply it. Render the spokes blazing gold. Render the safe air pitch black. Hathaway opened the sheet expecting a sketch and got a finished tier-six model: twelve spokes off a single center, engraving order numbered in the margin, signed at the lower right in a hand that had signed treaties. There was nothing on it to accept or decline.
She checked the intervals anyway, because a woman who had turned her niece's love life into a theatre of war was allowed to be wrong about angles, and found them correct, and then found them correct for a second reason that took another twenty minutes and made her put the quill down. The rotation was set against the interval a witch needs to re-anchor after a displacement, which is a talent rather than a constant, so Wilhelmina had picked a figure and ruled a line under it in the margin.
Below the line you blinked into safe air, got the width of one wedge, and the spoke came round. Above the line the wheel was scenery. Hathaway noted where the line sat, and that one of the handful of women living above it was currently in her directory. Every living thing on this server has a hardcoded instinct to move toward light. The Matriarch of the Eternal True Sun had refused, on aesthetic grounds, to build a spell that failed to give. So she had made it give, generously, radiantly, in twelve rotating spokes.
Darkness. [And I Shall Remember]: [attachment: The Roll Is Called, 4 pp.] [And I Shall Remember]: An area is a lazy target. Targets have names. [And I Shall Remember]: Wilhelmina is showing me her wheel. I have built against it. Signatures on the list look up and see an ordinary white sun, and the spokes where the spokes actually are. Signatures off the list get the black sun and the inversion. [And I Shall Remember]: Illusion decides what is seen. Evocation decides what is suffered.
[And I Shall Remember]: The list seals the instant you cast. Adding a name costs the whole spell. Entries are not amended. They're at the same table. The four pages were a ledger: ruled columns, a header row, a worked example filled in with three names Hathaway did not recognize and one date in 1963. Page four was the model, and the model was the ledger, the filing system etched into the spell with the magic running inside it. Hathaway wrote faster.
A woman who has kept a grudge book since 1952 just solved friendly fire by making the spell take attendance. [Currently Awake]: [attachment: Works Notice (Illumination), draft, 2 pp. Attaching also Milan'thir Municipal Code, Title 9, Section 402.] [Currently Awake]: Any installation reducing ambient illumination across more than fifty metres of public thoroughfare requires notice posted before works commence, specifying extent and hours. [Currently Awake]: So post it.
The illusion layer fires alone, ahead of the core, stating the boundary and the hour. Through that window the spell does nothing, and the boundary cannot be moved once it is up. Anyone who walks out is out, and this casting will never reach her. [Currently Awake]: That is the price. What it buys is that everyone still inside when the window closes is inside by her own decision. Her cold and darkness resistances are waived for the duration, with no save, because nothing is being done to her against her will.
[Currently Awake]: Notice transfers liability. That is not a figure of speech. [Currently Awake]: A witch who has met this before knows exactly what to do, and what she has to do is leave. An eviction. Hathaway opened the draft. It was a works notice, standard municipal stock, the form a woman pastes on a lamp post before she digs up a road, and laid over page two in pale registration ink, sharing one grid with it, was the casting sequence. She stared at that for a while.
The honest thing and the trap are the same object. There isn't a bureaucrat in there and a tactician in there taking turns. It's the same woman, and she's been like this the whole time. Then [Still Up Overall] finally stopped typing. Twenty-three minutes of it. [Still Up Overall]: [image attached] [Still Up Overall]: [attachment: Reconstruction, Composite Occultation Rite (11 sources), 31 pp.] A photograph, taken at an angle, of a page in a very old book held open by a paperweight and what was unmistakably a cat's paw. Behind the book, out of focus, the corner of a hotel bed. [Still Up Overall]: Eleven civilisations. Not one of them recorded how an eclipse works. [Still Up Overall]: Every single one recorded the same three things. When it started. How long it lasted. When it ended. [Still Up Overall]: Don't copy the astronomy. Copy the filing format.
[Still Up Overall]: Announce the duration before you cast. Four minutes nineteen, whatever you can afford, because you pay the whole run up front. Then the illusion layer stops lying to the enemy and lies to the spell instead: this is not happening, this is a recorded event playing back. [Still Up Overall]: A same-tier dispel goes looking for a live binding to unpick and finds a past tense. A counterspell needs a formation point and there isn't one, it already formed.
[Still Up Overall]: Neither school is doing its own job, which is the only reason it's a composite and not two spells sharing a coat. Hathaway's hand was cramping and she did not stop. They swapped shifts. [Still Up Overall]: Costs. No refunds, so you cannot end it early either. A higher tier breaks it by asserting present tense at the field. Weather-class overwrites it outright, because the sky holds one record at a time and a live storm beats a filed one. This story is posted elsewhere by the author.
Help them out by reading the authentic version. [Still Up Overall]: Don't ask what a spell is. Ask who wrote it down last. Thirty seconds later, an afterthought: [Still Up Overall]: Unrelated. In nine of my eleven sources the thing that eats the sun has a name. Hathaway looked at the fifth thread in her directory, at four words that had been dangling off a definite article all morning, and the missing noun arrived.
She opened it, scrolled up past the walls of proclamation, and read Bella's actual submission properly, from the beginning. The name of the module ran forty-seven words. The text underneath it was four lines long. The attachment under that was two hundred and six pages. [She Who Devours the]: The sun must never appear small. This is not negotiable. [She Who Devours the]: It occupies the same span of sky in every eye that beholds it, always, whether the field is thirty paces across or three hundred.
A diminished sun is not a sun. It is a lamp. [She Who Devours the]: And so that this is TRUE and not merely painted, the deprivation field must resize itself, moment to moment, to hold that span exact. Hathaway's quill hovered over the page while her processor caught up, and then went cold all the way down her arms. The enemy cannot judge the radius. Run at it and it shrinks. Back off and it grows. It does not matter how fast she is.
She scrolled into the two hundred and six pages fully prepared to find a hundred of them devoted to what the sun would be called in nine liturgical dialects, and found a hundred of them devoted to what the sun would be called in nine liturgical dialects, and then found the other hundred and six.
Continuous rescaling, derived and bounded, the mana curve plotted against field radius with a hard ceiling drawn in where the cost went vertical, annotated in an enormous looping hand: BEYOND THIS THE CROWN IS TOO HEAVY FOR YOU. GROW STRONGER. Bella shipped. The realization arrived with the specific horror of a producer discovering the intern's terrible idea had tested well, then discovering the intern had also written the shader.
Pure art direction, not one concession, and out the other end came the best anti-scouting property in the design. Build a lie whose internal logic is airtight and the world shrugs and runs it. Professor Lucas said so on day one. Bella had been operating this entire time inside a school of magic that had simply not gotten around to accrediting her. I will die before I tell her.
[Time]: Autumn Semester, Day 7 — 10: 52 AM Hathaway laid the seven models out across the desk in a fan, weighted the corners, and looked at seven schools, seven idioms, and seven completely different opinions about what the spell was for. None of them fit together. Not one pair. Seven senior engineers, seven private repositories, zero shared standard. Her producer thread cracked its knuckles with something close to affection. And nobody in the history of the discipline has ever merged an idiom.
She squared a clean sheet and laid the seven models face-down, one at a time, which felt obscurely like closing somebody's eyes. Only an idea. An idea survives being written down again by somebody else. She started over from the first node. Rhode came first, because Rhode was the power supply. She played the recording until she could state the principle in one line without listening to it again, put the receipt in a drawer, and derived the thermal path off that one line.
The stripped heat came out of the deprivation core and into the illusion layer, and there it fed Bella's continuous rescaling and Wilhelmina's twelve inverted spokes and the corona itself, every gram of spectacle in the architecture running on heat the spell had taken out of the enemy's own air. The whole VFX department is pirated. Her inner producer wept with joy. Tier-seven output on a tier-six invoice. Then it stopped fitting. The first conflict cost money.
Alucard's notice fired ahead of the core, and the notice was the illusion layer, and the illusion layer ran on heat the core had not stripped yet. Hathaway checked twice for an elegant way out and paid cash for the window out of her own reserve, the single most expensive line in the build, buying her nothing but the right to warn people. She wrote it in anyway. The second one had no clean answer.
Frederica's roll sealed at cast, and Alucard's window opened before cast, which meant the list had to close at the notice, and the notice was the moment every enemy in the field started running. She would be naming her own people while the boundary was still going up, on a spell she could not stop, could not shorten, and could not amend. Entries are not amended.
She looked at that sentence for a while, in the handwriting of a woman who had been operating that rule for fifty-two years, and understood for the first time that it had never been a personality trait. Then the interlocks, and the interlocks were where it turned into something she was not entirely comfortable holding. Two of the three layers took a reasonable instinct and farmed it. The third did not require anybody to be fooled at all, which was worse.
Friend or foe, Hathaway thought, sitting back, is now defined as whether or not this spell is telling you the truth. The limits came stapled on and she wrote them down honestly, because a spec that hid its own failure modes was how people died in the field. Five lines. Two of them were Mihaye's, and Mihaye had volunteered both without being asked, which was its own kind of terrifying. She was writing the title across the top when the slate chimed. [Offset] had finished typing. One message.
One attachment, and the attachment was one line. Everyone else had sent a building. Tasia had sent one unbroken string of notation, no diagram, no title, the way you copy a figure off an instrument, and it was not a spell. It was one mechanism, lifted out of whatever it belonged to and sent by itself, by a woman who had evidently decided the rest of a spell was packaging. Hathaway read it four times before she saw where it went. [Offset]: Your illusion places the sun in the sky above the target.
The sky above the target is a distance. A distance can be crossed, or waited out, or stepped around. Do not put it anywhere. You are not painting a sun. You are announcing that the sky belongs to you, and once the sky belongs to you, everything standing under it casts its shadow toward a body that does not exist. Read the shadows. Nothing in that field can stand anywhere without telling you where. Hathaway did not move.
The ink dried on the nib, and somewhere behind her sternum, the thing that had been assembled out of seven other people's genius quietly turned over and became a different object. Area denial was the small version of this. Invisibility works by bending light, and I have removed the light, so there is nothing left in there to bend. Anything that walks in gets a shadow issued to it. The shadow is a tax.
Tasia had spent a lifetime abolishing distance, and she had done it again in one paragraph, in a chat window, on a Sunday, about a drawing she had described as cute. She struck the old targeting layer out and rebuilt the whole of it off one sentence, and it came out clean on the first pass, every node above it holding without so much as a nudge. Which felt like proof. She did not run the checks again. Hathaway finished the title and set the quill down. [Notice of Eclipse].
A municipal filing and an astronomical prophecy. She had checked: both readings were load-bearing. Then she turned the sheet over and ruled eight lines on the back. There was not one stroke of anybody else's hand left anywhere in the document. She had written every node of it herself, and nobody would ever have been able to prove otherwise. She ruled the eight lines anyway. Frederica's format. She noticed halfway down that she was doing it and did not stop. Sky, and everything under it, reads out....
[Offset] Notice. Boundary. Consent.............. [Currently Awake] The roll. Amendments: none............. [And I Shall Remember] Past tense. Duration. Filed............ [Still Up Overall] Span, invariant, non-negotiable........ [She Who Devours the] Twelve spokes, and which way they lie.. [Strawberry Parfait ♡] Hollow the disc. Corona carries it..... [Death of the Author (pending litigation)] Power supply. Also lunch...............
[and the morning has no claim] She looked at the finished page for a while and waited for the fraud to catch up with her. It did not arrive. Eight contributors, zero of them on payroll, and not one pair of them compatible out of the box. I read eight people out of their own handwriting, ate the conflicts, paid for the window nobody else would have paid for, and wrote every line of it myself. That was always the job. Nobody ever gave the design lead an award for personally drawing the sword.
She rolled the parchment, tied it, and set it in the rack the way you archive a build you would never be able to reproduce. Somewhere below, the bell for lunch went, and she was going to have to walk into Nino's laboratory at two o'clock with a question mark still sitting unanswered in her thread. Later. Everything was later. She picked the slate back up and looked at the last message one more time.
At the single clinical word above it that never changed and never explained itself, sitting in her directory between a gambling addict and a woman who had put a heart on her own name. Her thumb moved before her judgment could file an objection. [Ctrl+S]: what does offset mean The reply took eleven minutes, which for that particular sender was somewhere between a considered response and a small act of violence. [Offset]: A tolerance. Fair.
Hathaway set the slate face-down on the desk, satisfied, and went to find her boots. Everybody's got a number they don't explain.
