Kaien's words remained suspended in the corridor, and for several seconds nobody moved, not because any of them had been paralyzed by fear, but because the statement carried an implication that was far more dangerous than the appearance of an ordinary enemy. The mountain had already demonstrated that it could manipulate voices, alter passages, and respond to the presence of the fragments, yet Kaien was not describing another mechanism hidden within its depths.
He was saying that whatever had begun moving through the darkness had deliberately chosen Leo as its destination. Rin looked at his brother, then at Leo, his expression caught between confusion and the instinctive desire to place himself between the two.
"How do you know?" Kaien did not answer immediately. His eyes remained fixed on the darkness behind him, where the heavy footsteps continued at the same measured pace, each impact sending a faint vibration through the stone beneath their feet.
"Because it tried to reach me when I entered this place," he finally said.
"It did not attack me. It followed me. Every time I changed direction, it changed direction. Every time I stopped, it stopped. I thought it was hunting me, so I ran until I reached the lower chambers." Leo listened without interrupting.
"And then?" Kaien swallowed.
"It stopped following me." Rin frowned.
"Why?" Kaien looked at Leo.
"Because it had found something else." The footsteps ceased. The sudden silence that followed was worse than the sound had been. Leo slowly drew his sword from its sheath, the blade catching the weak blue light that still leaked through the passage behind them. He did not raise it yet. Instead, he stood with his weight balanced naturally between both feet, his attention moving between the darkness and the silver markings along the walls. The silver-eyed man noticed.
"You should not fight it here." Leo did not look at him.
"Why?"
"Because this place is too narrow."
"That has never stopped me before."
"This is different." Leo's eyes finally shifted toward him.
"Then explain." The silver-eyed man hesitated.
"It does not fight like a creature." Before Leo could ask what that meant, the darkness ahead changed. A pale hand emerged first. It touched the stone wall. Then another hand appeared beside it. The figure slowly stepped into view. At first glance, it appeared human, although its proportions were slightly wrong. Its arms were too long, its shoulders unnaturally narrow, and its skin had the dull gray color of stone that had remained buried underground for centuries.
There were no clothes covering its body, yet there was no sense of vulnerability in its appearance; thin silver lines ran across its chest and arms, following patterns similar to the markings carved into the mountain itself. Its face was almost completely featureless. There were no visible eyes. No nose. Only a shallow depression where a mouth should have been. Rin's hand tightened around his sword.
"What is that?" Kaien whispered, "That is what I saw." The creature stopped. For several seconds, it simply stood there. Then the silver markings across its body began to glow. Leo felt his Internal Energy respond. Not because the creature had attacked him, but because something within its body had recognized the presence of his power. The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation. The reaction was immediate enough that Leo understood the danger.
It was not recognizing him. It was recognizing what he carried. The creature raised one hand. A narrow line of silver energy appeared between its fingers. Leo moved.
"Heavenly Demon Step." His body vanished from where he stood. The silver line cut through the space he had occupied a fraction of a second earlier and struck the wall behind him, carving a deep groove through the stone. Leo appeared beside the creature.
"Heavenly Demon Sword — First Form: Severing Edge." His sword descended in a clean diagonal arc. The creature raised its arm. Steel collided with silver. The impact shook the corridor. Leo's boots slid backward several centimeters, and the creature's arm bent unnaturally beneath the force before returning to its original position. It had not been cut. Leo's expression remained calm, but his grip tightened slightly around the sword. The creature moved again. Its hand swept toward his chest.
Leo twisted aside, allowing the attack to pass close enough for him to feel the pressure against his robe, then drove his elbow into the creature's ribs. The impact produced a dull crack. The creature staggered. Rin stared.
"He hurt it."
"No," Kaien said. The creature slowly straightened.
"He only moved it." Leo heard the distinction. The creature's body was absorbing force differently from a living human body. That meant conventional damage might not work. He stepped backward. The creature followed. Its head turned toward him. Although it had no eyes, Leo felt something watching him. Then it spoke. Not with Kaien's voice. Not with Leo's. Not with any human voice at all.
"You carry the moving current." Leo's sword remained raised.
"What does that mean?"
"You are not the door." The creature took another step.
"You are what the door has been waiting to measure." The silver-eyed man suddenly moved.
"Leo, get away from it." Leo did not obey. Instead, he asked, "Measure for what?" The creature's head tilted slightly.
"Compatibility." The word echoed through the corridor. Leo's eyes narrowed.
"So this isn't an attack."
"It is an examination," the silver-eyed man answered. The creature's arm opened. Silver energy spread through the corridor. Every marking on the walls activated simultaneously. Rin cried out as the floor beneath him shifted. Leo immediately moved toward him.
"Rin, stay against the wall!" Rin obeyed, pressing his back against the stone as the corridor began changing around them. Sections of the floor slid sideways. Walls rotated. The passage that had been straight moments earlier began forming a series of connected chambers. The mountain was rearranging itself. Leo looked toward the creature. It had not moved. It was simply watching. The silver-eyed man suddenly grabbed Kaien and pulled him backward.
"Move!" Kaien resisted.
"My brother—""Your brother is not the target." Kaien looked at Leo.
"I know." The words were barely audible. Leo understood. Kaien had known from the beginning. The creature was testing him. Not trying to kill him. Testing how his Internal Energy interacted with the mountain. That meant the previous attacks had also been tests. The fragments. The doors. The strange reactions. The voices. Everything had been measuring responses. Leo lowered his sword slightly. The creature stepped forward.
"Again." Leo stared at it.
"You want me to attack."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"To complete the measurement." Leo considered the words. Then he smiled faintly. Not because he found the situation amusing, but because he had finally found something concrete beneath all the vague mysteries that had surrounded the mountain. If the creature needed him to attack, then the mountain had a purpose. And if it had a purpose, it could be understood. Leo raised his sword again.
"Then measure this." His Internal Energy surged. The pressure filling the corridor changed immediately. Black-red energy gathered around the blade, not erupting wildly, but concentrating into a dense layer so thin that it almost appeared to have no color at all. The creature remained motionless. Leo stepped forward.
"Heavenly Demon Sword — Third Form: Black Crescent." The blade moved. This time the creature did not block. The slash passed directly through its body. For one instant nothing happened. Then the silver lines across its chest split apart. The creature staggered backward. A thin crack appeared from its shoulder to its waist. No blood emerged. Instead, silver light spilled from the wound. The mountain responded. Every wall around them began vibrating. The seven doors beneath the mountain answered simultaneously.
Leo felt the vibration travel through the sword in his hand. The creature looked down at the wound. Then back at Leo.
"Measurement complete." The crack in its body closed. Leo's eyes narrowed.
"What did you learn?" The creature turned its featureless face toward the far wall.
"The mountain can recognize you." Leo followed its gaze. A new symbol had appeared there. It was not the three-line circle used by the fragments. It was different. A single black circle surrounded by a thin red ring. Leo had never seen it before. The creature extended one hand toward the symbol.
"The eastern boundary has opened." The silver-eyed man's expression changed immediately.
"No." Kaien looked at him.
"What is it?" The man did not answer. Leo stepped closer.
"What does that symbol mean?" The silver-eyed man finally spoke.
"It means one of the other boundaries has been activated."
"Where?" The creature answered instead.
"Beyond the mountain." A low rumble passed through the earth. Then the blue light at the end of the passage disappeared. Darkness swallowed the corridor. The creature's body began dissolving into silver particles. Before it vanished completely, its voice reached Leo one final time.
"You have been measured." Leo watched the particles disappear.
"What happens now?" There was no answer. The mountain became completely silent. Rin approached cautiously.
"Is it gone?" Leo lowered his sword.
"For now." Kaien looked toward the newly revealed symbol.
"So what does the eastern boundary mean?" Leo stared at it for several seconds. Then he sheathed his sword.
"It means we finally have a direction." The silver-eyed man looked at him.
"You are going east." Leo turned toward the passage leading upward.
"I was already going east." Rin looked at his brother.
"And Kaien?" Leo glanced back at him.
"We get him out first." Kaien lowered his eyes. For the first time since they had found him, his expression softened. But the silver-eyed man remained silent. He was staring at the symbol. Not with fear this time. With recognition. And when Leo noticed, the man looked away before Leo could ask him what it meant. End of Chapter 76.
