Chương 53: The Shadow Beyond the Ruins

Dawn came slowly to the Royal Capital. There was no sunrise. The Arcane Convergence had left the sky covered in a thin veil of gray dust, and the eastern horizon remained colorless beneath the lingering magical haze. What little light reached the streets was cold and pale, turning the ruined buildings into silhouettes. The festival was over. No one celebrated. The streets that had been filled with music only hours earlier were now crowded with soldiers, healers, and frightened civilians.
The eastern district had become a disaster zone. Several buildings had collapsed completely. The ground itself had sunk in places, leaving deep fractures between the streets. Royal guards searched through the rubble. Mages worked beside them, using detection spells to locate survivors. And among those searching was Professor Gareth. He stood at the edge of the largest collapse, staring into the darkness below.
"Nothing?" A Royal Guard shook his head.
"We've searched the upper sections twice."
"Keep searching."
"Professor, the structure is unstable."
"I said keep searching." The guard hesitated, then nodded. Gareth looked down again. He knew what the others were thinking. There was very little chance anyone could have survived the collapse. But he refused to say it. Not yet. A few meters behind him, Professor Elara Veyne was examining the magical residue surrounding the ruins. Her expression was unusually serious.
"This wasn't a normal collapse." Gareth looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
"The energy didn't disperse randomly." She crouched and touched the ground.
"Something redirected it."
"Toward the east?"
"Yes."
"How far?" Elara looked toward the horizon.
"Farther than our detection spells can reach." Gareth remained silent. Then he asked:"Could someone have caused it?" Elara did not answer immediately.
"Possibly."
"Leo?" Her eyes moved toward him.
"I don't know." Neither of them spoke again. At the academy, the surviving students had been moved into the main hall. The atmosphere was quiet. Too quiet. No one wanted to discuss what had happened. Alice sat near one of the windows. She had not slept. Her hands rested together on her lap while she watched the ruined eastern district in the distance. Support the creativity of authors by visiting Royal Road for this novel and more. Amon entered the room. He stopped when he saw her.
"You should rest." Alice looked at him.
"So should you."
"I wasn't the one staring out the window all night." She looked back outside. Amon walked over and sat several seats away. He did not ask her whether she believed Leo was dead. There was no point. Everyone had the same question. Nobody had an answer. Masha entered a moment later, carrying two cups of water. She placed one beside Alice.
"Drink." Alice looked at the cup.
"Thank you." Masha sat beside her. For a while, none of them spoke. Then Daniel entered. His clothes were covered in dust.
"We've received another report." Amon looked up.
"What report?"
"The Royal Guard searched the collapsed chamber again." Alice's fingers tightened slightly.
"And?" Daniel shook his head.
"No body." The room became silent. Amon frowned.
"That means he could still be alive." Daniel nodded.
"Yes." Masha looked toward Alice. Alice remained calm.
"We shouldn't assume either possibility." Her voice was quiet.
"We don't know what happened." It was the only conclusion she could accept. Not hope. Not despair. Just uncertainty. Far beyond the eastern district, beneath a forest of dead trees, a black-robed figure walked alone. Each step was slow. Measured. The man stopped beside a stream. He removed his mask. Leo leaned against a tree. The moment the mask came off, the cold expression disappeared. He closed his eyes. His breathing was uneven. The damage to his ribs was worse than he had initially thought.
His left side was swollen, and every deep breath sent a sharp pain through his chest. The Internal Energy he had used to redirect the Convergence's power had also left his body exhausted. He had survived. Barely. Leo opened his eyes. He looked back toward the distant capital. From here, it was impossible to see the city. But he knew what was happening there. They would think he was dead. That was necessary. He reached into his clothes and removed a small piece of parchment.
It contained a rough map of the continent. He unfolded it against the tree. The capital was marked near the center. His finger moved east. Then farther east. He stopped only when he reached the edge of the known territories. There were almost no roads marked there. Only mountains, forests, deserts, and scattered settlements. Leo stared at the map. Four years. That was enough time to see the world. He folded the parchment again. But before leaving, he looked at his mask. The black surface reflected his eyes.
He had not worn it for a long time. Now the world had seen it again. That would create consequences. He knew it. Rumors would spread. People would give the masked man names. Some would call him a criminal. Some would call him a savior. Some would call him a monster. And eventually, someone would call him what he had once been known as. The Heavenly Demon. Leo placed the mask back over his face. His voice changed.
"Let them talk." He turned toward the eastern road. Then stopped. Someone was watching him. Leo's eyes shifted toward the trees. Nothing. Only branches moving in the wind. He waited. A few seconds passed. Then a small black bird landed on a branch above him. A thin silver thread was tied around one of its legs. Leo recognized it immediately. The same silver thread. The same symbol associated with the people who had attacked the capital. His gaze hardened.
"So you survived." The bird stared at him. Then flew away. Leo did not pursue it. Not yet. He had learned something important during the attack. The people behind the Convergence had not been defeated. Their organization was larger than the six people beneath the capital. And now they knew that someone had interfered with their plan. They might search for Leo. But Leo Shakespeare was already dead. Only the masked man remained. That distinction could become useful. Leo began walking again.
Several hours later, the Royal Capital received its first official report. The eastern district attack had been classified as a terrorist assault. The Arcane Convergence had been terminated. The underground structure was considered too dangerous to enter. And among the confirmed missing… was Leo. There was still no body. But after another twelve hours of searching, the Royal Guard officially changed his status. Presumed dead. The news reached the academy before sunset. Gareth read the report twice. Then folded it.
Alice stood nearby. She looked at the paper.
"Presumed?"
"Yes."
"So they still haven't found him."
"No." Alice nodded. She did not say anything else. Gareth studied her for a moment.
"You don't have to pretend you're fine." Alice looked at him.
"I'm not pretending." Her eyes returned to the ruined district.
"I just don't know what I'm supposed to feel when nobody knows what happened." Gareth had no answer. So he left her alone. That night, far from the capital, Leo reached an abandoned watchtower. He entered through the broken doorway and sat against the wall. A small fire burned before him. He removed his coat and examined his injuries. Several bruises covered his torso. His ribs were badly damaged, but not broken completely. He had survived because of Internal Energy. Not because he was unharmed.
There was a difference. Leo closed his eyes. He began circulating his Internal Energy slowly. The familiar flow moved through his body. Pain followed it. He continued. One breath. Then another. The Heavenly Demon Internal Circulation repaired what it could. Not quickly. Not completely. But enough. Leo remained there throughout the night. When morning came, he opened his eyes. His body still hurt. He could walk. That was enough. He stood and looked through the broken window.
The road ahead disappeared into the eastern wilderness. He had no companions. No destination beyond the eastern edge of the continent. No reason to return to the academy. For the first time since arriving in this world, Leo was completely alone. He did not dislike the feeling. He simply wasn't accustomed to it. He picked up his sword. Then the black mask. Before putting it on, he looked once toward the distant west. Toward the capital. Toward the life he had left behind. Then he turned away.
The mask covered his face. The sword rested against his shoulder. And the man who had supposedly died in the ruins walked into the unknown. Behind him, the Royal Capital mourned Leo Shakespeare. Ahead of him, the continent waited. And somewhere in that vast world, rumors had already begun spreading. A masked swordsman had appeared during the destruction of the Arcane Convergence. Nobody knew his name. Nobody knew where he came from. But one name was beginning to emerge from the whispers. The Heavenly Demon.
