The voice from beyond the door sounded exactly like Leo. Not similar. Not close enough to make him hesitate. It was his voice, with the same measured tone, the same slight roughness at the end of certain words, even the same quiet pause that sometimes appeared before he answered a difficult question. For one brief moment, the resemblance was so perfect that Leo felt something colder than fear move through him. Recognition.
Not recognition of the voice itself, but of the possibility that something had been watching him closely enough to reproduce it. He tightened his grip on the sword. Elena stood several steps behind him, staring down the staircase.
"That was you," she whispered.
"No."
"But I heard—""It wasn't me." The third bell rang. This time, the sound seemed to come from inside the stairs. The stone beneath Leo's boots trembled. He looked down. A thin silver line had appeared along the edge of the next step. Then another. The lines continued downward, forming the same seven-circle pattern he had seen on the metal plate in the archive. The door at the bottom opened another fraction. Darkness spilled through the gap. And Leo's voice spoke again.
"Come down." Elena took a step backward. Leo did not move. The masked entity remained at the top of the staircase, completely still. It had stopped trying to attack them. That was strange enough.
"What are you afraid of?" Leo asked. The creature did not answer. Leo looked at it.
"You told me not to go down." Silence.
"Now you're not stopping me." Still nothing. Elena looked between them.
"Maybe it can't." Leo's eyes shifted toward her.
"What?" She stared at the figure.
"It has been controlling the door, hasn't it?" The creature's head moved slightly. Elena continued, more confidently this time.
"But when the door opened, it stopped." Leo understood. The creature had not become afraid of the staircase. It had become afraid of whatever existed beneath it. That was useful. Leo turned toward the darkness.
"Stay here." Elena shook her head.
"No." If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation. He looked at her.
"I've spent twenty-two years behind that door. I'm not staying behind another one."
"You don't know what's below."
"Neither do you."
"I know enough to know that following me may get you killed." Elena gave him a tired smile.
"I've already spent twenty-two years being dead." Leo had no immediate answer to that. There was something unsettling about the simplicity of her words. She did not sound brave. She sounded exhausted. He stepped down. Elena followed. The staircase continued far deeper than the structure above should have allowed. Ten steps. Twenty. Thirty. The air became colder with every turn. Behind them, the doorway slowly disappeared from sight. Leo kept one hand against the wall as they descended.
The stone was smooth, but not polished. Tiny grooves covered its surface, arranged in repeating patterns that seemed almost mathematical. He recognized some. Others were completely foreign. After several minutes, Elena spoke.
"Do you know where we are?"
"No."
"Good." Leo glanced back.
"Why is that good?"
"Because if you knew, you'd probably tell me." He almost smiled.
"Probably." They continued. Eventually, the stairs ended. A vast underground chamber opened before them. Leo stopped. The ceiling was impossible to see. Pillars disappeared into darkness overhead, each one carved from the same black stone as the walls. Thin silver lines ran between them, connecting pillar to pillar in a massive network. Seven structures stood around the chamber. Seven doors. Not entrances in the ordinary sense. Each was a vertical slab of black stone surrounded by silver markings. Six were sealed.
The seventh stood open. Leo stared.
"This is beneath Blackridge." Elena nodded.
"I think so."
"How?" She pointed toward the far wall. There, carved into the stone, was a map. Not a map of the city. A map of the continent. Leo approached. Seven points had been marked across it. One beneath the capital. One near Velaris. One beneath the forest. One beneath Blackridge. The remaining three were farther east. Leo studied the positions. They formed a pattern. A vast circle. At the center was a blank space.
"What is that?" Elena moved closer.
"I don't know." Leo traced the map with his eyes. The blank center was not empty. It had been deliberately erased. He recognized the technique. Someone had carved the surrounding lines deeply enough to survive centuries, then removed the center with extraordinary precision. Someone had wanted the location hidden. A sound echoed through the chamber. Footsteps. Leo turned. Nothing. Elena looked frightened.
"Someone is here." Leo listened. The footsteps came again. Not from behind. From the seventh door. He raised his sword. The voice spoke. His voice.
"You shouldn't have come." Leo stared into the open doorway.
"You're getting repetitive." The voice answered:"I am not the one who speaks." That made him pause. Elena looked at him.
"What does that mean?" The darkness beyond the doorway shifted. A figure stepped forward. It looked human. At first. A young man in black clothing, with his head lowered and his face hidden by long hair. He walked slowly into the chamber. Leo watched him carefully. The man stopped beneath the silver lines. Then he raised his head. His face was ordinary. Too ordinary. No scars. No distinctive features. Nothing that would make anyone remember him. But his eyes were wrong. They were completely silver.
The man looked at Leo. Then smiled.
"I wondered when you would arrive." Leo kept his sword raised.
"Who are you?" The man looked at Elena.
"I knew her father." Elena stepped forward.
"You knew my father?"
"Yes."
"Who are you?" The man smiled.
"Someone who died before you were born." Elena froze. Leo's expression hardened. The man continued.
"I was one of the six." Elias's words returned to Leo. Six people entered the third door. Five returned. One was missing. The man looked at Leo.
"Your archivist knows the story."
"Then you know Elias."
"I knew Elias before he became an old man."
"Why did you stay here?" The man's smile disappeared.
"Because the door wouldn't let me leave." Leo looked toward the seventh door.
"And now?"
"It opened."
"Why?" The man looked directly at him.
"Because of you." Leo's eyes narrowed.
"Don't mistake coincidence for importance."
"I didn't." The man's gaze moved to Leo's sword.
"You brought something the doors have been waiting for." Leo's hand tightened around the hilt.
"Internal Energy?" The man smiled again.
"No."
"Then what?"
"The will behind it." Leo said nothing. The man stepped closer.
"You carry a discipline that does not belong to this world." That statement was dangerous. Not because it revealed his past. It did not. But because it suggested the doors could distinguish between systems of power. The man continued.
"The people above believe the keys open the doors."
"They don't?"
"No."
"Then what do they do?"
"They wake them." Leo looked at the seven pillars.
"Wake what?" The man's silver eyes turned toward the darkness above.
"The continent." Silence filled the chamber. Elena whispered, "What does that mean?" The man did not answer her. He looked only at Leo.
"The people hunting the keys believe they are preparing for an invasion."
"And they're wrong?"
"They are."
"Then what are they preparing for?" The man smiled.
"The return of something that was never gone." Leo's expression did not change. He had heard enough vague prophecies in his life to know how little they were worth.
"You're wasting my time." The man laughed quietly.
"You sound just like him."
"Like who?" The man's smile faded.
"The one who built the doors." Leo looked at the seven structures again.
"Who built them?" The man opened his mouth. Before he could answer, every silver line in the chamber lit at once. The seven sealed doors began to vibrate. Elena stepped backward.
"What is happening?" Leo looked toward the map. The blank center had changed. A single point of light had appeared there. Then another. Then another. Seven lights spread across the continent. But one of them was moving. Slowly. Eastward. Toward the distant lands beyond the kingdoms. The man looked at the lights. His expression changed for the first time.
"No." Leo turned toward him.
"What?" The man whispered:"The eighth door." One of the seven pillars cracked. A sound like thunder rolled through the chamber. And somewhere far beyond Blackridge, in a land Leo had never seen, a bell answered. End of Chapter 67.
