June wandered through the streets of Lengue wearing a weathered brown cloak. In his hand was a worn pamphlet containing a shoddy map, flattened against a small notebook, with a pen from the mundane world clipped to its side.
For the last several days, and even during his time within the preliminary simulation, June had repeatedly thought about getting Lilia a gift; in fact, he had also thought about gifting the entire Harth family something as well; however, he had a difficult time trying to figure out what any of them could want. They were literal royalty! Not to mention they were wealthy beyond June's imaginings.
But simply existing without reciprocating all that they had done for him didn't sit well with June; all of his necessities were already covered by them, and they even offered to give him an allowance, which he politely refused. Three meals a day and a bed were all he needed, and yet they still went above and beyond taking care of him. They treated him like one of their own, like family!
June wanted to make sure that each and every one of them, especially Lilia, felt even a smidgen of appreciation that he held in his heart for them. So he left the manor he was staying at with a goal in mind!
'Earn some money to buy the family gifts before the Dreamer division starts.' Since the end of the preliminary rounds, a two-week interval began before the Dreamer division began. While this period was designed primarily for rehabilitation before the tourney resumed, June was able to fast-track his rehab with his staple ability, Flesh-Shaping. Once someone was considered rehabilitated and ready, they were highly encouraged to rest in order to participate in the next portion of the tournament in their best state.
June, however, had different plans in mind. He would have loved to take his time and handcraft gifts for everyone in the family, but making several unique gifts before the deadline at his skill level was a tall task. If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. So the next best thing would be to buy a gift! Yet, there was one big roadblock in his journey to express his appreciation!
'Money…' For an understandably infuriating reason, the prices of things within Lengue were very steep. It was a beautiful place with interesting weather phenomena kissing the edges of the city's walls; it was also a place of major commerce with clients from high society to royalty themselves, and the place where hundreds of nations within the coalition met in order to fraternize and send their finest into the games.
Besides the unique weather phenomena or the fact that Lengue was a place where high society brushed arms, the city itself had beautiful canals similar to the picturesque Venice; the buildings themselves were made of polished limestone and sandstone, and at night, the sky and the city itself glowed with vibrant colors from ever-present waterworks and waterscreens alike.
He tugged at the hood of his cloak before haphazardly flopping the notebook that Mortimer prepared open; the notebook contained scrawled conversion rates, going rates of typical purchases from the mundane realm's Canada compared to Lengue, do's and don'ts, general street knowledge, local etiquette, and even some personal recommendations for restaurants and stores that the old man himself visited in the past. June was on his way to the Guild of Lengue.
A place not too dissimilar from the adventurer guilds of fantasy, but more oriented to quick gig contracts over epic adventures, though occasionally still offered. He didn't mind washing dishes or scrubbing toilets for a quick gig, but the glaring issue of his unwanted fame teased him at every chance. People wanted the Lord of Light, and if the Lord of Light himself worked in your fine establishment, your word was basically attached to his.
Which basically meant that any employer that would take him in for a bit could get away with saying anything, and by the rule of fame, the Lord of Light would automatically endorse whatever they say or do in the public eye.
While he didn't really care about the public eye, the Lord of Light wasn't an alias, but a moniker, meaning that if he worked under the wrong person, and that person did something bad, it would be attached to the Lord of Light, and since the Lord of Light was him, he was attached to Lilia, and Lilia was a Harth and then the Harths would get in trouble….
'I think I'm stuck in my head….' Regardless of whether any of what he imagined would or wouldn't happen, it was a risk he wasn't willing to take. From what Mortimer wrote, other than the necessary name required by the Guild of Lengue, most work would be attributed to that name instead of the actual person. This meant that a new alias would be needed once again.
