"Who cares?!" Naomi yelled, her competitive instincts snapping her right back to reality. She didn't understand why the monster was acting crazy, but she was not going to waste the perfect opening.
"She is completely wide open! Hit her now!" The 13th Unit immediately jumped back into action. And this time, it was incredibly easy. Because the Lamia was completely disoriented and fighting invisible ghosts, she wasn't defending herself at all.
"Earth Chains!" Zinia roared, slamming her hands on the floor. Thick, heavy loops of solid rock shot out of the ground. Because the Lamia wasn't paying attention, the rocks easily wrapped around her massive tail, pinning her securely to the floor so she couldn't slither away.
"Got her!" Zinia cheered.
"Light her up!" Laxmi ran forward with a huge grin on her face.
"Fire Torrent!" she shouted. She unleashed a massive, roaring wave of orange fire. The Lamia didn't even try to dodge. The fire slammed directly into her chest, burning her pale skin and making her shriek in pain. Ira stepped up smoothly.
"Target is stationary," she noted in her flat voice. She swung her heavy water whips, bringing them crashing down on the Lamia's head, totally drenching the monster.
"Goodnight, snake lady," Luna yawned, pointing her fingers at the wet monster. A brilliant, deafening bolt of yellow lightning crashed into the Lamia. The high voltage traveled instantly through the water, shocking the monster's entire body. The Lamia's six arms flailed wildly in the air, completely paralyzed by the electricity.
"My turn!" Naomi shouted. She used her wind magic to launch herself high into the air. With the monster totally distracted and trapped, Naomi easily spotted the soft, unarmored spot right at the base of the Lamia's neck. Naomi spun on her way down, driving both of her sharp daggers deep into the weak spot with absolute precision. The Lamia let out one final, gurgling hiss. Her glowing yellow eyes rolled back into her head.
Her massive, heavy body went completely limp, and she crashed face-first onto the stone floor with a loud, ground-shaking thud. The dungeon boss was totally defeated. The cavern went quiet again. The only sound was the gentle humming of the bright crystals on the walls. The girls landed on the ground, breathing heavily. They slowly lowered their weapons, looking at the massive, unconscious snake monster lying in front of them. It had all happened so fast.
One second they were losing badly, and the next second, the monster just completely fell apart. Ken dropped his hand and shoved it back into his pocket. He walked over to the defeated monster, stepping carefully over a puddle of water. Ensure your favorite authors get the support they deserve. Read this novel on Royal Road.
"Ha!" Ken cheered loudly, pumping his fist in the air. He gave the entire team a massive, proud smile.
"Did you guys see that?! I told you! I told you this ring was an absolute lifesaver! As soon as I held it up, she couldn't even look at me! My luck is officially off the charts!" Naomi walked over, wiping a bit of sweat from her forehead. She looked at Ken, then looked at his cheap blue ring. She still looked entirely unconvinced.
"Ken, that was just incredibly lucky," Naomi sighed, shaking her head. She didn't want to admit it, but she couldn't deny what she had just seen.
"I don't know why she suddenly started attacking the air, but your cheap piece of plastic had nothing to do with it. She probably just hit her head on the ceiling too hard when she dropped down."
"No way, boss lady," Ken argued happily, holding the ring up again to admire the shiny plastic stone.
"It was the good luck! The alley guy totally told the truth! I am never taking this ring off. It is my new best friend." Sayma walked over to join them, pushing her glasses up her nose. She looked down at the Lamia, her face full of deep, analytical thought.
"It was very strange," Sayma admitted quietly, folding her arms.
"The Lamia is a high-tier predator. They have incredible eyesight and perfect balance. For her to suddenly lose complete control of her motor functions right in the middle of a battle... it makes no logical sense." Ira stepped forward, standing right next to Sayma. As usual, her face was completely flat, showing absolutely zero emotion.
"Her movement patterns were highly abnormal," Ira stated in her monotonous, robotic voice. She stared blankly at the unconscious monster.
"I watched her carefully. Her attacks did not match our positions. Her defensive postures were completely backwards. It was exactly as if she was fighting something invisible." Ken immediately pointed a finger at Ira, his goofy smile returning.
"See? Ira gets it!" Ken cheered loudly.
"She was fighting the invisible aura of my extreme good luck! The ring totally scrambled her brain! You guys should all go back to the market and buy one! We could be the luckiest team in the world!" Ira slowly turned her head. She looked at Ken's proud, messy face, and then she looked directly at the cheap, totally fake piece of blue plastic sitting on his finger. Ira stared at him for three solid seconds. Her expression did not change a single millimeter.
"No way," Ira replied flatly.
Ira's flat, completely emotionless rejection of Ken's cheap plastic ring hung in the air for exactly two seconds. Ken was just about to argue back and defend his new favorite piece of jewelry, when a new sound interrupted them. Clap. Clap. Clap. The slow, highly sarcastic sound of someone clapping their hands echoed from the dark tunnel they had just walked out of. The girls of the 13th Unit immediately stopped resting. Naomi's hands flew right back to the hilts of her twin daggers.
Laxmi's fists ignited with fresh, bright orange fire. Sayma pushed her thick glasses up the bridge of her nose, her polite expression turning completely rigid. Walking out of the shadows and stepping into the glowing, crystal-lit cavern was the 16th Unit. At the very front of the group walked Princess Hestia. Her white silk dress was completely spotless, perfectly pressed, and flowing elegantly around her ankles. She looked like she was arriving at a high-society tea party, not a damp, monster-infested dungeon.
Behind her marched her nine elite female servants, all wearing their pristine white and gold combat uniforms. They didn't have a single drop of sweat on their foreheads or a single scratch on their armor.
"Bravo, sister," Princess Hestia said, her voice dripping with fake sweetness and total condescension. She looked at the massive, unconscious body of the Lamia lying on the floor, and then gave Princess Iris a mocking smile.
"I must admit, I am actually a little bit impressed. I fully expected to find your little band of misfits completely digested by now. Thank you so much for taking out the trash for us. It saves my girls from getting their boots dirty." Naomi took an aggressive step forward, her green eyes flashing with intense anger.
"We didn't clear this room for you, Hestia! We found the Core of Luminus first! It belongs to the 13th Unit!"
