"C'mon Cara, put the book down. We need two more for volleyball and I've volunteered you and Sarah." Cara re-reads the opening sentence of the second paragraph for the third time. The combination of words don't make sense. Will never make sense while she must pretend not to hear Vix.
"Now, bookworm." She isn't quick enough. Vix has the book out of her hands, closed, and dropped onto the sand before Cara has formed her objection.
"You could have at least let me put the bookmark in," she grumbles instead.
"Who's 'we'? Since when do 'we' play volleyball?" Sarah complains, having given up pretending to be asleep.
"We play volleyball when a group of tanned, shirtless men are in need of extra players and have implored me to help them." Cara looks from Vix's painted nails to her this-season-must-have H&M push-up bikini, to her carefully layered gold necklaces and hoop earrings, to her tourist-market wide brimmed straw hat.
"Implored you, huh?" Unauthorized use: this story is on Amazon without permission from the author. Report any sightings.
"Yes," Vix says, her chin jutting in annoyance. Sarah brushes sand from her thighs as she stands.
"Fine," she mutters, turning to Cara.
"She's not going to leave us in peace." She extends an arm out to Cara to pull her up, "I'm relying on you to prove that at least one of us capable of returning a shot." Cara pulls on an oversized t-shirt, her bikini has twice as much fabric as Vix's but she doesn't trust it.
"I thought this was a girl's only holiday?" Vix pushes her sunglasses down her nose to hold them both in her stern glare.
"It is a girl's holiday," she corrects.
"We agreed to take turns picking the activities. You," she points a candy-floss pink fingernail at Sarah, "made us tour that temple yesterday. You," the fingernail finds Cara, "made us trek up to that waterfall. Now, it's my turn and I choose a game of volleyball with some exceptionally cute guys who will no doubt feel like buying us a few cocktails when happy hour starts in 45 minutes. I call dibs on the one in the powder blue shorts.
The lanky one in red shorts seems a bit of a twat, steer clear of him, otherwise, the rest are all yours." She gives them both a devilish grin. Sarah shares a sympathetic look with Cara, "If this goes badly, I've seen a five hour jungle trek we can sign her up for."
"Perfect," Cara grins.
