And so it starts again. Harsh white light drenches the room. A cold floods into her shoulder blade, seeping unchallenged under her skin. Mingling. Dissipating. Until she can no longer detect the difference in temperature between the insistent visitor and her body. As the fog of a drugged and dreamless sleep clears, the anguish of remembering ploughs into her like a runaway train.
She doesn't know how many times she has woken up in this way, but she instinctively knows that she has, and that she has tried to stay in the fog every time. Her tears have long dried up having exhausted their supply after an extended fleeing down her cheeks. Most of the tears had disappeared into the gaping black hole in her chest. With her head hanging low, her chin tucked to her neck, she can't see the hole, but it is there. A pit of despair that feels so real she wonders how it is that she is still breathing.

A plain white room with one white chair and one red light. Stare at the red light, Cara. Answer the questions, Cara. She screams and cries and pleads and promises and argues and swears at the relentless red light. It continues regardless, wearing her down until she is desperate to give it the right answer.
The answer that will dispatch her back to the dreamless sleep. They initiate the numbness. The ache of the hole fades. Her mind clogs with cotton wool. Nothingness wraps its arms around her shoulders and whispers sleep in her ears.
