DATE: Wednesday, January 6, 2016 LOCATION: The Draven (Low Earth Orbit, Alpine Trajectory) LOCAL TIME: 07: 00 AM CET The Draven held a geostationary lock four hundred kilometers above the Swiss Alps. Through the viewport, the curvature of the Earth glowed with the first pale light of the European dawn. I closed my eyes and dropped into the Silver Chord. I bypassed the physical security cordons of Klaus Richter's private chalet and pushed my awareness straight into the fire-lit great room.
The seventeen overlapping nodes were gathered. Moreau, Voss, Richter, and fourteen other Capstones. But my focus instantly locked on the three anomalous signatures at the center of the room. The Teotl. They stood perfectly still by the hearth, a stark, grotesque contrast to the aristocratic Nephilim surrounding them. They were short, barely reaching five feet, with glistening, oily brown skin that seemed to secrete a viscous film.
Their oversized, bulbous heads were crowned by three distinct, cartilaginous ridges, and their massive, lidless red eyes drank the firelight like deep wells of blood. Even through the digital twin's sensory filter, I could practically smell the sharp, suffocating stench of ammonia bleeding off them. They possessed a loose humanoid geometry, but they didn't breathe. They didn't shift their weight.
They simply existed in the space, radiating a cold, crushing gravity that made the human Nephilim instinctively lean away.
"The Architect is confirmed dead," Richter said from the head of the table.
"The primary obstacle to the Abyssal Node is gone." One of the Teotl shifted its massive red gaze. When it spoke, the audio feed fragmented into a jarring, synthesized harmonic.
"The Architect was a symptom," the Teotl vibrated.
"Fractal Systems is the disease. Project Ley Lines remains impenetrable. Who controls the administrative keys?"
"His brother," Moreau answered.
"Chase Tillman. He inherited the macro-logistics override."
"Then the brother must surrender the network," the Teotl stated.
"He operates strictly within the San Diego Arcology," Voss interjected.
"A direct kinetic strike or abduction will trigger Fractal Systems' automated defense protocols." Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions.
"You will not use kinetics. You will use leverage," the Teotl commanded. Richter nodded slowly.
"The widow and the children. Olga, John, and Elise Tillman. They are currently residing in the Arcology."
"Extract them."
"If we kill them, Chase Tillman will scorch the earth," Moreau warned.
"He will lock the FSI grid permanently."
"We will not kill them," the synthetic avatar replied.
"However, we did manage to free Tlacaelel from his immediate family." The room went dead silent. In the physical world, my heart skipped a beat. Do you understand what the machine is saying, Architect? Lamech's voice slithered through my mind. They didn't pick the locks of your precious digital twin. They bypassed the Silver Chord entirely. The tulku ritual. Flesh and bone. They physically abducted your sibling. Shut up, I projected.
"JAY," I ordered.
"Mute the audio feed from the chalet. Pull the physical tracking data for my siblings residing in Southern California over the last thirty days. Cross-reference their trajectories with the Capstones." The map collapsed until only a single, glowing point remained. Date: December 14th. Location: A private estate in the Hollywood Hills. Target: Amy Tillman. Secondary proximity target: Eric Thorne. Eric. Her date. JAY pulled up the archived rendering. It was a neon-lit holiday party.
The system flagged Elias Voss entering through a subterranean garage, but my eyes were locked on my sister. She was standing on a balcony, laughing at something Eric had just said. He handed her a fresh glass of champagne. She took a sip. Ninety seconds later, her motor functions began to fail. Eric caught her by the waist as she slumped forward. He seamlessly guided her stumbling body down a quiet hallway and unlocked the door to a soundproofed guest room.
Elias Voss and a Nephilim extraction team were waiting inside in the dark. The door clicked shut.
"Pull Amy's biometric data post-incident," I ordered.
"Resting heart rate decreased by fourteen percent," JAY reported.
"Micro-saccadic eye movements altered. Gait and center of gravity shifted. Biological conclusion: The consciousness piloting the vessel is no longer the original host." Your sister isn't dead, Lamech purred. Just... buried. Trapped in her own mind while Tlacaelel drives the meat. They hadn't used high-tech neural overrides. They had used a chemical twilight state. An Open Mouth. The sickening familiarity of the movement made my blood turn to ice. I knew the syrupy, bitter smell of the phenobarbital.
You recognize the shape of the blade, don't you? Lamech whispered. It was the same voice I had heard in the hallway shadows in 1980, whispering the chemistry to me while my father reached for his scotch. The Athlete saw what the Architect missed, Lamech mocked. You were so busy looking at the stars, Chad, that you didn't notice the wolf wearing your sister's skin.
"Restore audio to the chalet," I ordered. Standing by the hearth was Amy. She wore a simple white linen dress.
"The flesh is always weak," Tlacaelel said through my sister's lips. Golden tendrils of the Silver Chord illuminated around her fingertips.
"The current age of human consciousness will be overwritten today." I watched the golden light surge from her chest. There is no rescue, Lamech breathed. Only the penalty. Drop the sky on him. I didn't argue. I stepped out of the digital twin and severed the Silver Chord.
