DATE: Tuesday, January 5, 2016 LOCATION: The Draven (Polar Shadow Orbit) LOCAL TIME: 03: 17 PM EET The Draven hung in perfect silence three hundred kilometers above the Arctic Circle, its matte-black hull drinking starlight. Inside the command cradle, my physical body sat motionless, heart rate locked at forty-eight beats per minute. The escape from Benghazi was three hours old. I closed my eyes and dropped into the Silver Chord. The transition was seamless.
One moment I was breathing recycled air inside the craft; the next I was pure awareness riding the global carrier wave.
"JAY," I said.
"Shift the focal point to The Sand Castle. 1900 Spindrift, La Jolla. Residential level. Passive live feed." The cold void of space dissolved into the quiet sanctuary of our home. It was 5: 00 AM on the West Coast. In their bedrooms, John and Elise were fast asleep. I shifted to the master bedroom. Olga was curled on her side, breathing in a slow, steady rhythm, one hand resting over the slight swell of her belly.
I let my awareness slide down the digital tether, dropping past the residential level into the subterranean Lower Foundation medical bay. Bathed in the ambient, sterile light of the stasis pods lay their actual physical bodies, driving the Lattice Mimetic Decoys sleeping in the beds above. When the sun rose, the news of the Benghazi compound would break. But I knew my wife. She would absorb the shock. She would simply tell the kids I was away on work.
"JAY," I said.
"Establish a persistent, passive overwatch on the residential decoys, and hard-lock the life support protocols in the Lower Foundation. Alert me instantly if any unverified personnel approach the LMDs."
"Overwatch established," JAY confirmed.
"Sand Castle biometric locks sealed." I pulled my awareness out of the bunker and suspended myself in the blank canvas of the digital twin. I pulled up my own encrypted activity logs from early December—the day National Security Advisor Robert Ellison had offered me the ambassador position. The log was barren.
"JAY," I said.
"Shift the focal point to Washington D. C. Target: Robert Ellison. Rewind the archive five weeks to the forty-eight hours before he offered me the Libya appointment." The simulation rebuilt itself into a secure office in the West Wing. Ellison stood by his window, punching a sequence into a secure phone.
"JAY, run a passive cross-reference through the biosphere archive. Isolate the incoming audio from Ellison's receiver and find the exact geographic coordinate where that specific voice pattern was spoken at this exact timestamp." If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it. The simulation split. A secondary window opened, dropping my awareness into a sleek office in Frankfurt. A woman stood by the window holding a phone. JAY overlaid her file: Dr.
Lena Moreau, European Central Bank.
"We have the President's ear," Ellison said from Washington.
"We're positioning Fractal Systems as the primary infrastructure partner for North Africa. I'll make the call to Tillman tomorrow. Using his brother's political capital will force his hand." In Frankfurt, Moreau stared out at the skyline.
"Ensure he accepts, Robert. The Teotl want him isolated in Benghazi. Once he is cut off from his San Diego network, the local militias will handle the rest." I fast-forwarded the archive to the exact moment I accepted the appointment. Ellison poured a glass of scotch and tapped a message into a burner terminal: The asset has taken the bait. Tillman is deploying.
"JAY," I said.
"Trace Moreau's outgoing communications immediately following her confirmation text from Ellison." A glowing thread shot south from Frankfurt, terminating beneath the Zurich Financial District.
"Cross-reference that Zurich terminal's digital signature with the tracking tag I planted on the VR Ghost's uplink during the Benghazi firefight."
"Signatures match with one hundred percent fidelity," JAY reported.
"The Zurich node is the Benghazi host."
"Snap forward to present day, JAY. Pull every frame from the moment the Zurich node disconnected from Libya." A high-resolution VR construct materialized. A man sat at a curved obsidian console in a sterile bunker. JAY pulled the file: Dr. Elias Voss, Helios Capital Holdings.
"They confirmed the compound is burning," Voss said into a secure phone.
"Tillman is dead. The Teotl will be satisfied." A deeper, older voice answered.
"Send the confirmation packet to the Capstones. All active cells are to stand down on the Tillman vector and shift priority to the Abyssal Node. If the Architect is truly gone, the servers are now uncontested."
"JAY," I ordered.
"Isolate that incoming audio feed. Identify the speaker and map his physical location." A third window opened. An elderly man sat in a leather wingback chair in a fire-lit study. JAY overlaid the file: Klaus Richter, CEO of the Bank for International Settlements. Location: Private chalet, Lake Geneva, Switzerland. I placed Ellison, Moreau, Voss, and Richter in the center of the digital twin.
"JAY," I said.
"Compile a list of every individual these four targets came into direct or communicative contact with from forty-eight hours prior to my Libyan Ambassador appointment to the present moment. Designate this dataset Ring One."
"Ring One compiled," JAY reported.
"Compile Ring Two from Ring One. Compile Ring Three from Ring Two. Then filter the dataset. Isolate only the individuals within Rings One, Two, and Three who communicated directly with other individuals inside those same three rings." The noise vanished. The millions of random civilian contacts collapsed into nothingness.
"Seventeen overlapping nodes identified," JAY reported. Seventeen high-value targets across four continents. The absolute apex of the Nephilim command structure.
"JAY. Cross-reference the physical trajectories of these seventeen targets over the next forty-eight hours. Look for geographical convergence."
"Convergence detected. All seventeen nodes are scheduling transit to a single coordinate within the next twenty-four hours." The convergence point was Klaus Richter's private chalet above Lake Geneva. The meeting was scheduled for 06: 00 UTC the following morning. I stepped out of the digital twin. My eyes opened inside The Draven. They celebrate your corpse while you wear their future like a cloak. How deliciously ironic, Lamech's voice stirred in my mind.
"JAY," I said quietly, looking out the viewport at the slowly rotating Earth below.
"Compile the full contact map. Every contingency activated since 20: 47 UTC yesterday. First we let them feel safe. Then we take everything."
