Thirteen days ago, the NASDAQ had hit 5, 048, and Jim Simons and I had pulled the floor out from under it. Outside the café window, Sand Hill Road was in a blind panic as trillions of dollars of synthetic wealth evaporated into the ether.
But inside the booth, I was looking at a man who didn't care about the market crash at all, because he was obsessed with extinction. Elon Musk sat across from me. He was twenty-eight, pale, and vibrating with the frequency of a man who had just merged X. com with Confinity to form PayPal, but hated every second of it.
"I'm done with banking," Elon said, pushing his untouched salad away.
"I'm arguing about chargebacks while the window for consciousness is closing. I need to buy a rocket, Chad. The Russians won't sell to me. They spat on my shoes."
"They spat on your shoes because you're a tourist," I said.
"You want to send a greenhouse to Mars. It's a stunt."
"It's inspiration!" Elon snapped.
"Inspiration doesn't build a civilization," I said, opening my laptop.
"Logistics does. And right now, you don't have the energy, the workforce, or the permission." I turned the screen toward him.
"You're worried about how to get to Mars. I'm worried about what humanity does when we get there. And more importantly... what humanity does here, when the robots take their jobs." I pulled up a graph showing the exponential rise of automation.
"In twenty years, AI and robotics will kill the labor market," I said.
"Truck drivers, factory workers, miners—gone. We face a crisis of purpose, Elon. Billions of people with no economic value. That leads to riots. That leads to collapse."
"So what's the fix?" Elon asked, his eyes narrowing.
"Universal Basic Income?"
"No," I said.
"Universal Basic Purpose. We don't pay them to sit at home. We pay them to build the solar system." I swiped the screen. The image changed to a human operator suspended in a haptic rig, wearing a visor.
"The Silver Chord," I said.
"We use the Russian cybernetics I acquired in '96. I. D. Kochubievsky solved the latency loop. We scan the solar system. We create Digital Twins. The human in Ohio welds a beam in the simulation; the robot on the Moon executes it seconds later." Elon frowned, calculating the mechanics.
"Human movement is clumsy. When you add the two-and-a-half-second light-speed delay to the Moon, the mechanical sway alone will cause the robots to tear themselves apart."
"They would," I smiled, tapping a key to bring up a wireframe rendering of a robotic chassis.
"If they moved like regular machines. But I fixed the physics engine a decade ago. For the last ten years, my studios have been harvesting biometric telemetry. Every vault, every break-fall, every perfect kinetic transition I executed as a kid on the set of Shadow of the Bat was digitized. We pulled movement data from Olympic athletes and Tier-1 martial artists." I watched Elon's eyes widen as the wireframe robot executed a flawless, perfectly balanced pivot.

"That kinetic data is the base operating system for the hardware," I explained.
"When the steelworker moves his arm in the rig, the software auto-corrects his balance and momentum using my stunt telemetry. We crowdsource the human intent, but the robots execute with superhuman, hyper-efficient fluidity."
"That requires staggering power," Elon argued, leaning forward.
"And heavy lift capacity. Rockets are too expensive for moving industrial weight. You can't put this on the Moon overnight."
"I'm not using rockets for the heavy lift," I said.
"And I'm not doing it overnight. My Russian teams at the Svobodny Cosmodrome have been secretly launching the anchor payloads into orbit since '97. I'm using the tether." I zoomed the map out to the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Ecuador.
"A Space Elevator," Elon scoffed, shaking his head.
"It's a nice dream, Chad. But the ocean currents will snap it. The atmospheric vibrations will tear the carbon lattice apart."
"You're thinking like a structural engineer," I said.
"You see vibration as a threat. I see it as fuel." I pulled up a new schematic showing the cross-section of the tether. It wasn't just a rope; it was a complex weave of nanotubes and piezoelectric polymers.
"The ocean currents are constant," I explained.
"They exert millions of tons of drag on the anchor. The upper atmospheric winds add more. The entire structure strums like a guitar string. Viktor Akulichev designed the cable to sing. The tether is a 35, 000-kilometer piezoelectric generator. As the ocean pushes it, the mechanical stress is converted directly into electricity. The vibration is the voltage. "There are rocks in that stream big enough to reset civilization. It's not a matter of if we get hit again, Elon. It's when." I pulled up a trajectory simulation.
"I'm going to use the Svobodny Cosmodrome Team—my heavy lifters—to build Mass Drivers on the Moon. We build a fleet of tugs. We fly into the Taurid stream. We harvest the meteors. We clear the lane."
"And do what with them?" Elon asked.
"Throw them into the sun?"
"No," I said.
"We throw them at Venus. I'm going to build a Venetian Moon." I let the weight of the statement hang in the air before tapping the screen to initiate the model.
"We aggregate the Taurid meteors into a gravity well around Venus. The combined mass creates a new tidal pull. The tidal friction physically kneads the planet's interior. We violently heat the core. We restart the dynamo, and the magnetic field returns." I looked him in the eye.
"This is the Great Filter, Elon. We solve two problems with one rock. We terraform Venus into a paradise using Andrey Kapitsa's atmospheric stripping protocols, and by depleting the Taurids, we ensure that Earth never faces an extinction-level impact again. I'm not just an architect. I'm the janitor of the inner solar system."
"The UN will lose its mind," Elon whispered, running a hand through his hair.
"They'll sanction you. The Outer Space Treaty..."
"That's the beauty of it," I interrupted.
"They can't stop me. Because I own the High Ground. The Space Elevator anchor is in international waters. The factories are on the Moon. The tugs launch from orbit. None of this infrastructure touches US soil. None of it uses US airspace." I leaned back against the booth.
"It is red-tape proof. By the time the Security Council drafts a resolution, the asteroids will already be in transit. I am creating a new kind of sovereignty, Elon. Cost becomes irrelevant because we own the energy. Laws become irrelevant because they can't enforce them. It is a fait accompli." I slid a check across the table. $500, 000, 000.
"I have the Russians for the science," I said.
"I have the Elevator for the lift. I have the Wall for the logistics. But I need you for the manufacturing. I want a partner. I handle the Elevator, Venus, and the Silver Chord. You handle the rockets and the terrestrial manufacturing. You build the machine that builds the machine."
"But the Earth factories are just the start?" Elon asked, staring at the check.
"They are the prototype," I said.
"Once we perfect the line in Nevada, we export the whole factory to the Moon. That's where the heavy industry happens." Elon looked at the simulation of the Venetian Moon, forged out of Earth-killing asteroids. He stood up. The exhaustion was completely gone, replaced by a terrifying, relentless drive.
"I'm in," Elon said.
"But we're going to need a lot of lithium for those robots."
"I know a place in Nevada," I smiled.
"Valery Zdor is already designing the actuators." I shook his hand.
"Get out of PayPal, Elon. Let Thiel handle the money. We have a planet to save and another one to build."
