"And the broken part goes into the tank," Melinda said, tracing the cycle.
"But a diet of pure plastic will cause a massive population spike in the worms."
"It does," I said. I pointed down over the railing to a secondary microbial filtration vat, cascading into the massive water columns below.
"When the bio-reactor reaches capacity, the excess worms and glycol are flushed through a microbial filter that neutralizes the glycol, and the protein drops directly into the tilapia tanks. The tilapia eat the worms. The tilapia produce the nitrogen effluent. The effluent charges the biochar in the terra preta. And the terra preta grows the caloric yield." Melinda looked at the writhing caterpillars, then down to the massive agricultural machine below.
"Polyethylene to human calories," she said, a sharp, brilliant smile finally breaking across her face.
"It's a perpetual motion machine for human survival." I stepped closer to the railing, looking down at the dark earth.
"In a few years, the tech sector is going to hemorrhage. A decade after that, the banking system will collapse under its own synthetic debt. When Andrew Mellon told Herbert Hoover to let the markets liquidate in 1929, he thought the system would hit a bedrock of real value. He was wrong. The system has no floor." I looked at Melinda.
"This is the only way Archstone Capital can provide a social safety net for everyone on the planet. We manufacture the bedrock ourselves. When the global economy falls through the floor, the Palladiums will be the net that catches them." Melinda adjusted her posture, pulling a small notebook from her suit jacket. The systems architect was fully online.
"Monday," she commanded, the hesitation completely eradicated from her voice.
