The moment his peak mana subsided, a searing pain assaulted him. His muscles screamed, and the old scars across his back had split slightly from the violent force of the wings' eruption. But he ignored all of it. Physical pain was nothing compared to the cold dread that seized his heart when he remembered what had caused all this destruction.

"Lumia!" He spun sharply, his eyes cutting through the thick smoke rising from the molten glass. He found her at the edge of the scorched circle, lying across the remains of a tree root that had not fully melted. He ran toward her, heedless of the ground's heat that nearly dissolved the soles of his boots. He dropped to his knees beside her with such force that the hardened glass cut into them. From his fingertips he released threadlike filaments of golden fire, fine as a single strand of hair, and guided them with surgical precision into the wound. It was an extraordinarily dangerous procedure; a single mistake could incinerate her tissue. Using his flames as energetic tweezers, Dex began plucking the malicious black lightning sparks one by one.

He folded it carefully, then wrapped it around her injured arm and tied it off in a knot, firm, but not cruel. Lumia sat up slowly, leaning against his arm. She looked at the crude bandage around her forearm, then lifted her head to look at him.
