Rather than striking directly with his dagger-which would have required him to pass through the grid of cutting threads and lose his limbs-he decided to change the rules of the game entirely. If the spider controlled the space with its threads and shadows, Dex would control the entire environment and convert it into an inferno incompatible with life.

This was strategic thinking that transcended random combat: the application of Domain Expansion using the pure power of the Phoenix. Dex held his breath and raised both hands high, gathering every drop of Mana he could draw from his Core without incinerating his internal organs. Dense blue and gold fire condensed around his palms until they appeared as miniature suns.

It was sacred blue-gold flame, consuming the oxygen in fractions of a second and converting the toxic humidity in the forest air to scalding steam that dissolved bone. The surrounding tree trunks ignited at once, and the network of invisible threads the spider had woven dissolved the moment the tongues of flame touched them, evaporating as though they had never been. But the most important effect was not the material destruction. It was the magical destruction.

The Spectral Reflection concealment ability the Shadow Spider used required stability and cold in the surrounding Mana to function as a mirror reflecting nothingness. Dex's fire made the Mana of the entire space boil and convulse with violence. With this mythic magical and physical detonation, the creature's camouflage collapsed entirely, and the mirror of shadows was shattered. Its eight eyes, which had been pale and yellow, widened now in a sudden and unprecedented terror.

The creature released a sharp scream-closer to the screech of tearing metal-that ruptured the eardrum, as it released its grip on the burning tree and attempted to leap outside the circle of fire beginning to scorch its solid armour and melt its limbs. In the moment of the spider's descent, Dex leapt into the air with terrifying momentum, defying gravity. He directed a burst of explosive flame downward beneath his feet, using it as jet propulsion that launched him toward the creature at the speed of a cannon shell. In mid-air, he drew all the scattered fires around him and concentrated them into his right hand.

He did not use his material dagger-he converted his very hand, through the advanced fusion, into a long fire-blade: highly compressed, so dense it appeared as a solid plasma blade extending two metres.

"In my dark cell, under the prison wardens' lashes, I dreamed every night of burning that unjust world... I dreamed of igniting the sky itself!" Dex roared in the air, his voice merging with the phantom Phoenix roar that formed as a fire spectre behind him.

"And today... I begin with you as the first offering to my reclaimed freedom!" Dex brought the fire-blade down in a vertical, severing blow targeting the centre of the spider's head where its eight eyes converged. There was no resistance worth noting. The fire-blade of absolute heat pierced the creature's solid skull and the external armour that deflected steel swords as though it were a heated knife passing through a block of soft butter.

The blade continued splitting the creature from head to the end of its abdomen in a single, smooth, lethal motion. Not one drop of blood scattered: the deep wound was cauterised and burned instantly by the otherworldly heat, evaporating the blood and toxic fluids before they could touch the ground. Dex landed on one knee behind the creature. With a heavy sound, the Shadow Spider's body split into two halves and fell to the scorched earth as a lifeless corpse.

Within seconds, under the effect of the Phoenix fire that continued consuming the dark Mana, the creature's body began to dissolve and disintegrate rapidly, converting to a mound of fine black ash scattered in the hot air. In the midst of this ash, one thing remained unburned: a Mana Core the size of a fist, glowing a deep, dark violet, pulsing with the pure energy of the slain creature. Dex rose slowly amid the fire beginning to die down under his mental direction.

He was gasping heavily, his chest rising and falling rapidly, sweat covering his brow thick with battle ash. He turned to look at Lumia: she stood at the centre of the burnt circle untouched, watching him with a silent and deep admiration, as though understanding for the first time the devastating dimension of the man who had chosen to protect her. Dex bent and picked up the violet Core. It was still warm. He looked at the Core in his palm, then at the scattered ash of the Rank B- beast.

"I currently rank at Rank D as a quantitative measure of the Mana my body can contain," Dex thought, analysing the completed battle with mathematical precision.

"But the quality of the Phoenix Mana-its absolute purity-and my combat techniques forged in the hell of prisons allow me to crush beasts that outrank me by two full tiers. This is not about the size of the reservoir. It is about the sharpness of the blade and the temperature of the fire." He closed his fist over the Core and felt a new power surge through his veins.

Though the road to Okonnor's camp was still long and dark, and fraught with Rank A beasts and perhaps Rank S catastrophes lurking in the deeper depths, this strategic victory had granted him the missing piece: absolute self-belief. He had proven to himself conclusively that the prison chains had been broken at last-not only physically, but spiritually and mentally. Fire, he understood, does not recognise the traditional ranks of sorcerers, nor the titles of nobles, nor the levels of beasts.

It recognises only one thing: who possesses the will to burn everything that stands in their path. In the heart of the Forbidden Zone, Dex was no longer the young man fleeing a prison, no longer the prey trying to survive. He had been reborn. He had become the hunter.
