"Hello, this is the production team for Burning Kitchen. We're notifying you that we'll be holding a revival challenge next week, and you've qualified to compete. The time and location will be sent to your email — please watch for it." A roar went off in Chris's head. Here it was. It was really here.
"… Got it. Thank you." He fought to keep his voice level. He hung up and stood there, frozen, for a good half a minute. Then an enormous, wild joy drowned him. Every bit of his persistence, all his grinding work — in this instant, all of it had meaning. He rushed to the oven and looked at the batch roasting inside, his eyes turning rock-steady. He had no time left to wallow, no time to doubt himself. He had one week. Inside that week, he had to break through the wall of heat control.
He picked up his pen and drew a curve in his notebook. Horizontal axis: time. Vertical axis: temperature.
"High heat at the start, lock the surface moisture fast… then drop the temperature, let the heat seep slowly into the core… then back up at the end to form a crisp shell…" What he was designing wasn't merely the cooking steps for a dish.
