Chương 58: I'll Be Waiting for You to Beat Me

The judging ended; the dust settled. The eleven contestants lined up again, waiting for Gareth Vane to announce the final elimination. The atmosphere was suffocating.
"Today, every one of you faced a hell-tier exam," Vane's voice echoed through the kitchen.
"Some of you crawled out of hell. And some of you will stay there forever." His gaze swept across them all.
"Tom," he called first.
"Your pastry was a disaster. You didn't even complete a finished dish. Take off your apron and leave my kitchen." Tom showed no surprise. He bowed deeply, silently untied the crumpled white apron, laid it on the station, and turned to go. His journey on Burning Kitchen had ended in the bleakest way possible.
"Next," Vane said, his eyes growing sharper.
"Jessica." Jessica's body gave a violent jolt, and the tears welled up again.
"Your problem is in the details," Vane said.
"You worked hard, and your beef's doneness was decent. But a Beef Wellington is a whole. The failure of any one part is a structural failure. That soaked-through bottom is unforgivable. I'm sorry—your journey ends here too." Jessica clapped a hand over her mouth to keep from sobbing aloud. She nodded, thanked the judges, and took off her apron as well. As she passed Sarah, Sarah pulled her into a tight hug. Watching from upstairs, Chris felt a pang.
In the restaurant-takeover battle, Jessica had been a loyal executor within his command structure—not the most gifted, but always diligent. That was the cruelty of competition: there were no points for effort, only results.
"As for the rest of you," Vane said, looking at the remaining nine, "you've all survived. But don't celebrate too soon. The best performer today was..." Every heart leapt into every throat.
"Ethan." When the name was spoken, there was no suspense in it. Ethan inclined his head slightly and accepted the applause.
"You didn't just make the most perfect Beef Wellington tonight," Vane said, looking at him.
"More importantly, I saw your thinking in your food. Keep it up."
"Thank you, Chef." Ethan's voice was as calm as ever—but no one knew that the fist he held clenched was slick with sweat. Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings. The competition over, the contestants dragged their exhausted bodies out of the kitchen. Chris came down from the exemption seat on the second floor and was about to head back to the contestants' lounge when, in the corridor leading backstage, someone stopped him. It was Ethan.
He stood there alone, as if he'd been waiting just for him. The corridor lights were dim, stretching the two men's shadows long. A subtle tension hung in the air.
"You picked the Wellington," Ethan said first, his voice a little hoarse—the fatigue that comes after a long stretch of total focus.
"You wanted to see me bring out my very best, didn't you?" It wasn't a question. It was a statement of fact. Chris looked at him—this man who'd just walked off the battlefield, the smell of gunpowder still on him. He didn't deny it.
"I just want there to be no excuses," Chris answered, just as directly, "when I finally beat you." Ethan stalled at that. Then he laughed. It was the first time since the competition began that he'd shown such a genuine smile, one without any mask. There was release in it, and admiration, and more than that, the fierce joy of finding a worthy match.
"Good." That was the only word he said. Then he held out his hand. Chris held out his too, and the two hands clasped tight in the air.
"Then I'll be waiting," Ethan said, let go, turned, and walked away. Chris watched his retreating back. The man who'd once been cold as a machine now looked, from behind, unshakably strong. A true nemesis had been born. Chris returned to his room, and only then did the system's chime arrive, late. [Hidden quest "The King's Declaration" complete.] [Quest evaluation: Perfect (winner Ethan Cole's dish reached 93% completion, rating A-, exceeding the quest's minimum threshold).] [Distributing reward...] [Congratulations—you have obtained: Arena Points +100.] [Congratulations—you have obtained: special passive item "Chef's Intuition" ×1.] [Chef's Intuition]: Passive item. During cooking, when you face a critical decision point (heat judgment, seasoning choice, timing of the pull, etc.), this item has a very small chance to trigger, offering you an extremely faint instinctive cue. The cue provides no specific data or reasoning—it appears only as an intuitive "right" or "wrong" signal.
The item cannot be actively activated; its trigger probability is tied to your concentration and your understanding of the dish at hand. Chris read the new item's description, and his eyes lit up. This thing might as well have been made to order for him. His advantage all along had been the data-driven analysis the system gave him. But he also knew clearly that this was his edge and his cage both. He leaned too hard on logic and data, and lacked the near-mystical intuition that came naturally to top-tier cooks.
And this item filled in precisely his greatest weakness. It couldn't provide data, but at the moment he needed it most, it could give him a directional nudge. It was a bridge from the data-driven to the artistic. He opened his attribute panel.
[Competitor: Chris White] [Culinary Rating: B (77/100)] [Arena Points: 407] [Skills/Items held: Data Eye, Dish Simulation, Absolute Heat Control (Short Duration) ×1, Vane's Approval (Passive), The Lonely Gourmet (Title), Chef's Intuition (Passive)] Looking at that sizable stash of Arena Points, Chris knew it was time for the next round of investing in himself. Burning Kitchen had already eliminated nearly half the field, and none of those left were weak. The matches ahead would only get harder.
He had to grow stronger.
