The tasting officially began. The three contestants stood before the table, awaiting the final judgment.
"Sarah, you first." Nina Marsh motioned with a smile. Sarah drew a deep breath and stepped forward, a touch of shyness and pride on her face.
"Chef, my dish is called Sunday Afternoon Chicken Pot Pie. When I was little, every Sunday afternoon, my mom would bustle around the kitchen baking this. My sister and I would play in the living room, and the whole house smelled of cream and roast chicken. To me, this flavor equals home — unconditional love and safety." Her words were plain, but full of genuine emotion. Nina Marsh tasted first. She cut a small piece and put it in her mouth.
"Mm…" She closed her eyes, savoring it.
"The crust is perfect — fragrant and crisp. The sauce inside is very rich, the chicken tender. This flavor… really is like a warm hug. Very comforting, very healing." Curtis Hale tasted too and nodded.
"I completely agree. This is an honest dish, no showmanship, just pure, delicious home cooking. It makes you think of your mother, your grandmother. Very well done, Sarah." Last was Vane. He ate a bite without expression and chewed a long time.
"Sarah," he set down his fork, "this pie tastes good. Technically, the crust and sauce are handled well. It is indeed home-style. But…" His tone turned.
"This is Burning Kitchen. Home-style alone isn't enough. It's warm, it's safe, but it lacks surprise. It doesn't show your personal mark as a chef. This is a wonderful 'mom's dish,' but it's still a distance from a champion's dish." Vane's verdict was as sharp as ever, but on the whole still affirming. Sarah bowed gratefully and stepped back. If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it. Next was Ethan.
He stepped forward, posture upright, his tone cool as an academic lecture.
"Chef, my dish is called Order. It's composed of a 144-degree low-poached chicken-breast roll, corn bricks, potato discs, and celery foam. This dish represents my understanding of home — precise, balanced, logical. The position and flavor of every element is calculated to achieve overall harmony." His introduction held no story, only data and concept. Hale tasted first.
"Whoa." He let out a gasp.
"The texture of this chicken… it's incredible. Smooth as silk, completely overturns my idea of chicken breast. Technically, this is absolutely master-level." Nina Marsh agreed.
"The plating is stunning, like a work of art. Every flavor is clean, pure. I can taste your control over the ingredients — very powerful." Vane's turn. He cut the perfect chicken cylinder and put it in his mouth with the geometric sides. He ate in silence, his expression graver than when he'd tasted Sarah's.
"Ethan," he finally spoke.
"You're right. This dish is full of order. It's precise, it's balanced, it's technically flawless."
"But—" his voice rose abruptly, "it's cold as a block of ice! I can't taste a shred of feeling in it! This isn't a dish, it's a math formula! You tell me this is home? Whose home looks like this? A showroom with no human warmth? Are you cooking, or showing off your tools and technique?" Vane's criticism came like a string of firecrackers, merciless. Ethan's face went iron-gray; he clenched his fists hard but couldn't argue back a single word.
"Technique is forever a tool in service of flavor and emotion — never the end in itself!" Vane summed up.
"You're a technically skilled craftsman, but you're a long way from being a true chef!" The floor was dead silent. Everyone was struck dumb by Vane's fury. Last, it was Chris's turn. The mood had dropped to freezing. Chris walked forward in silence.
"All right, Chris." There was a thread of impatience in Vane's tone.
"Your turn. What does your 'lonely laboratory' want to tell me now?" Chris looked at his plate, then at the three judges. He didn't tell a warm story like Sarah, and he didn't throw out a pile of technical terms like Ethan. He only said calmly, "Chef, please taste it first. I think the flavor will explain everything." The move took everyone by surprise. Facing Vane, he'd offered no explanation at all and asked, instead, to be tasted. It was enormous confidence, and an enormous risk.
Vane stared at him a few seconds, then slowly picked up his fork.
