Felicity and the others had resumed their journey in search of the last two swords. Without Xia's sensory perception, however, every step had become more uncertain and slower. Finding the swords was now like searching for a needle in a haystack. Except that, in this case, the haystack was a dark world inhabited by beings capable of reducing you to pieces with a single gesture. Until then, they had relied on Xia's presence. Having her by their side had always given everyone a sense of security.
Now, however, without her powers, the mission to recover all the legendary swords had become much more difficult. Even Felicity knew this, although she had tried not to rely too heavily on her from the beginning. They therefore decided to stop and eat. Ethan, Leah, and Agnes lit a small campfire and began cooking some fish. A short distance away, Felicity sat on a rock, polishing the blades of her swords. Her gaze was focused on the metallic reflection dancing across their surfaces. Xia approached her hesitantly.
"Can I ask you something?" she asked. Her tone was calm, like the usual Xia's, but there was a certain insecurity in her voice. Now that she had lost her memories, she no longer seemed like a mage who had lived for more than a thousand years.
"Sure", Felicity replied without taking her eyes off the blades. Xia remained silent for a few moments before speaking.
"If the old me was one of the most powerful mages to have ever existed…why did she need you as well? No offense, but you all seem like ordinary humans". Felicity stopped. She lowered the cloth and raised her eyes toward her.
"In your case, I would ask myself the same question. I don't know why Xia wanted the others, but as far as I'm concerned, I know why she wanted me. She told me I had a special power inside me. An ancient power, even more powerful than yours". Xia tilted her head slightly.
"What power?"
"The power of the Clan Prinz".
"You're from the Clan Prinz?"
"Yes…the last survivor".
"What do you mean?" Love this novel? Read it on Royal Road to ensure the author gets credit. Felicity lowered her gaze for a moment.
"The clan was massacred". Xia's eyes widened. She couldn't believe it. Such an ancient clan, a bloodline that had endured through millennia of history, had been completely annihilated. It seemed almost impossible to her.
"When?"
"About eight years ago. I'm the only survivor". Xia slowly lowered her gaze.
"I'm sorry…it must have been terrible". Felicity shrugged slightly.
"That's life". Then she looked directly into Xia's eyes.
"You've lost someone too. Your son…even though you don't even remember ever having him". Xia slowly inhaled.
"It's a strange feeling. I have no memories of him, and yet I know that my body gave birth to a life and then lost it. The me who had her memories must have suffered terribly".
"Yes…most likely", Felicity replied in a low voice. Xia continued observing her for a few seconds. Too many questions were piling up in her mind.
"Did the me with my memories predict that I would ask these questions? Did she know I would stay by this girl's side?"
"And if she really wanted those swords to resurrect her son…why would she need a Prinz?" She shook her head slightly, as if trying to dispel those thoughts. There was no point dwelling on them any further. She gave Felicity a faint smile and returned to the camp. On the rocky mountain, the Green Dragon continued staring at Teresa. After several long moments of silence, it slowly approached its eggs and crouched over them, protecting them with its enormous wings. Naomi cautiously approached Teresa.
"What I just saw…I have no words". Teresa's heart was pounding wildly, as if it wanted to burst from her chest. The gnome stepped forward.
"Why did they call you 'Your Highness' earlier?" he asked, narrowing his eyes. Teresa was about to answer, but the gnome took a closer look at her. Her curly hair. Her green eyes. Her face. Until now, she had seemed like nothing more than a simple noblewoman. But after hearing someone address her as "Your Highness", he no longer had any doubts. He turned pale.
"Wait…you're…the Queen Mother!" he exclaimed. In an instant, a soldier pointed his sword at the gnome's throat.
"You bastard. You should have kept your mouth shut". Then he looked at Teresa.
"Your Highness, just give the word". Teresa calmly observed the gnome.
"I don't think you're stupid enough to reveal who I really am to anyone, am I?" The gnome swallowed.
"Oh, no, of course not. I'm an intelligent person". He felt the blade pressing against his neck. Teresa looked at the soldier.
"Let him go. I trust his cowardice". The soldier nodded and sheathed his sword. The gnome touched his neck, as if he wanted to erase the sensation of steel from his skin. Teresa turned her attention back to the Green Dragon.
"I wonder if it's hungry…" Naomi gave a tired smile.
"I think it's doing better than we are, Your Highness".
"It has sad eyes", Teresa murmured.
"It must have suffered a lot". The gnome looked around.
"So what do we do now? Watch it sleep?"
"Yes…I want to wait for the eggs to hatch".
"But is that safe? What if it decides to burn us?"
"It didn't kill us just now. Why would it do so afterward?"
"Maybe because it sees us as a threat to its young". Teresa continued staring at the dragon.
"Don't be afraid…it won't kill us", she replied confidently. Several hours passed in silence. The Green Dragon continued sleeping, protecting the eggs beneath its wings. Its rumbling sounds, resembling deep snoring, could be heard even hundreds of meters away. Then, suddenly, a black portal opened behind them. Everyone spun around. Xarath emerged from it. He slowly cracked his wrists, then raised his gaze and noticed the dragon. A faint smile appeared on his face.
"The Green Dragon…" He watched it for a few moments.
"Incredible. I keep encountering races I thought had already gone extinct".
