The frozen crimson flakes did not melt when they touched the earth. It was an armored crab monster, its massive pincers dripping with a viscous, steaming fluid that sizzled against the frozen ground. Ahead of it, three stragglers from the third-wave selection—people who had panicked and broken away from the main group during the initial descent—were running blindly through the open flats.

Their footwear slipped on the icy scabs of blood-snow, their lungs screaming in the thin, hostile air. The creature did not chase them with the clumsy gait of an earthly crustacean. It skittered with a terrifying, scuttling fluidity, its eight pointed legs driving into the stone like pneumatic spikes.
